Good of them to own up and reverse the policy. A good day for consumers.

However I still feel as if Xbox One will suffer the consequences for all of this fiasco for a while to come. I for one will not be an early adapter of the console, and likely will be of the Playstation 4. Which is odd because last generation I bought neither early.

However if I learned anything by all these issues it is how wrong I was to have neglected my Playstation 3 for so long, as well as Playstation itself. Xbox One may assume that position of the 'Present but mostly neglected' system in the next generation in my home.

Never really been a game on Xbox that inspired me to want the systems,

I load my own ammo for the real thing, so generally really don't play shooters. Even DUST514 couldn't hold my interest and I love Eve.

I game to do things that I cannot approximate in real life.

The exception to the shooter rule, is because I was raised on MGS from the NES onward, so I'd credit Kojima with the parts of my Playstation ownership that aren't inspired by having VII and FF Tactics (before it got popular).

Now, barring exclusives, (Shadow of the Colossus for example) most games relevant to me are multiplatform. remove that from the math.

Power wise, similar enough to be nitpicking for the amount of effort to discuss.

I hate forced bundles, and the Xbox III (not playing their marketing game!) forces the purchase and use of the camera accessory. I'm an old man with 3 pins in my left shoulder. I'm not getting up to wave my arm around for anyone, and I'm too lazy to dig through my cables to unplug one when I'm not using it.

Even if they turn off the 24 hour check at the end of the system's life cycle... for now, I like being able to pick up my PS3, my Pawn-shop projector ( $250 bucks with 1000 hours left on the bulb), go into the middle of nowhere with at least a Generator, and throw a 19 foot screen on the wall, without the Internet, or even a Cell signal to use my phone as a hot spot.

Years ago the missus and I were snowed into a hotel with a skeleton staff and minimal services beyond power. 4 days there before we could get out, ( Snow reaching the second story in places, Just Barfood and the outdoor Saltwater Hottub worked, still best vacation ever) then another week plus snowed in at home with the kids and my mother in law. Cable out. Xbox III would fail me at this point. Fallout 3, buggy as it was kept me sane. The kids watched blurays on the second PS3 and played Wii sports.

Now lets talk about those windows "Toddler-grade large crayola-Crayon tiles" on their stupid phones and systems.... What am I, 6 ?

Edit
Posted after the article went live. lol. Still my distaste of bundles and forced cameras stands. The whole debacle shows how little they understood the reality of their customer base's needs.

I own two xboxes and had both the first xbox at launch and the 360.... First off I am not getting the new xbox this time and will most likely get a ps4.. I don't like the whole no used games thing and the price tag. Ms is pulling what Sony did last round.

I dont like the fact also that MS allowed FFXI on the xbox because they need SE and now they don't need them so much anymore they told them to take a hike on FFXIV.

I just bought a ps3 for FFXIV and if it continues as good as it seems the xboxes go up on ebay and wont buy another xbox till MS changes its attitude.. I am tired of fps/3rd ps and sports titles and I am sick of MS telling me what I want to play and not giving me what I want to play.

It's pretty for the kids, and easy for you to see old man! Smiley: laugh

As far as consoles, I think I've made my decision for this upcoming generation, at least at the beginning. It'll be 2 PS4's and a WiiU for my son and I. Later on I might get an Xbox One for the exclusives, but I am in no rush now.

Final Fantasy comes to both systems, Kingdom Hearts probably comes to both systems...

...but Tales series will more than likely be PS4 ONRY. That seals my decision aside from the bad business practices I see MS engaging in with XBONE. Between Tales on the PS4 and X-series on the WiiU I've got my two systems for this generation.

The only Xbox exclusive I've ever truly been interested in was Fable. As much as PS3 (and the console genre in general) disappointed me with rpg and survival horror options there was never that 'game" I had to have from Xbox.

The last Xbox game I truly loved was Phantom Crash. Gawd I loved that game!!!
#133 Jun 19 2013 at 7:38 PM Rating: Good
I'm excited to hear about that news.

Not really because I'm that interested in the Xbox now, but it's good that consumers voted with their wallets, people were not pre-ordering the console, and they backed Microsoft into a corner.

A big victory. It's nice to know that the customers can band together and have their voices heard and get what they want.

I'll still be using a PS4 for multiplatform games, but I might buy an Xbox One at some point if it gets some exclusives that interest me.

I owned a PS3 and an Xbox360. I'm likely to purchase both the PS4 and the XB1 for the same reasons...

Both consoles have exclusive games I enjoy. Both consoles have DLC exclusive content that I enjoy. Both consoles have flaws when it comes to certain games and it's worth owning both to me so that's probably what I'll do.

I'll get an xbox one eighty after a few years as it gets cheaper.and depending if it gets some must have exclusive rpgs. Most FPS are multiplatform and I will not buy a console for one or two exclusive any genre besides rpgs.

Whichever company delivers the most rpgs is the system where most of my money will be spent. As of right now, it's PS4 for me, just because I love indie games and they are the only company not throwing red tape in the way of developers.

Really I think nobody should ever call this device anything but the Xbox 180, so that MS does not forget what they had to pull in order to survive the anger they incited from betraying their consumers.

And that Consumers never forget what Microsoft tried to pull this generation.

I was going to get the One first but now I'm getting the PS4.

Though I really don't care about the problems with the One and will eventually get that later on down the road. Maybe late next year; it all depends on exclusives; whether or not my friends/family get one. I know my best friend is getting the One because of Forza and that's it. But he'll eventually get a PS4 as well.

It mainly had to do with price, ARR and the slightly more powerful system.

Novelty is also playing a role, as I think the interface on the PS4 is a bit more fresh.

On a side note I really thought MS was going to subsidize the One. That would have been interesting.

No matter whether they changed their policy now, it's clear what they would be doing to the players if allowed to.
Their immaterial vision is total control over the playerbase they have; not by quality, but by placing restrictions.
That alone turns me off.

Ok so I googled 'Xbox one betrayal' and the article I found said that MS was betraying gamers for 4 reasons:

1) It's not backward compatible.
2) An internet connection is required.
3) You can't rent or borrow games.
4) Gaming is not the selling point.

So let's go ahead and scratch 4 off the list. I really don't see how this is a let down. They may as well have said "It's going to do what PS4 does, but it will let you interact with web content and applications as well as TV via kinect and voice commands". Regardless of what the perks are, it's still going to play games.

So starting from the top...

It's not backward compatible. Well I already have an Xbox 360 that works perfectly well. The only con is that you have to get your lazy *** up off the couch, rocker, office chair or whatever the hell it's firmly planted in to insert or remove a disc. This is nothing new. A 360 is not massive by any means so having an extra component on your desk or in your entertainment center shouldn't phase you.

An internet connection is required. I've had internet service since it was dial-up 14.4k powering my mighty 386 DX Packard Bell circa... well I don't want to date myself, but you get the point. I equate this to being betrayed by Sony because your PS4 requires an electrical socket. This reason is probably more of a joke than the 4th reason. Moving on...

You can't rent or borrow games. Finally a valid beef. Personally, I am a PC gamer before anything else and I spend the vast majority of my time playing games on my PC. You can't rent PC games and it's hit or miss whether or not you can borrow them. I will say that I do understand that a lot of people out there play games that they're through with in hours, days or a few weeks so I can completely see why this would put people off.

I only really play multiplayer games, either online or with friends in person, so most of the time they also own the game or we're at each other's houses playing so it's not an issue for me. The other thing about this is that I like to support companies for developing games I like with dollars. I don't rent games to get an impression or make a decision to buy because almost every game has a free, downloadable demo for that purpose.

I skimmed through the thread for other reasons, but couldn't find anything else of note other than the following for lulz:

1) The NSA spying on me through my kinect camera.

Because terrorists all train on CoD amirite? Honestly, I would spy on people too. Watching white people getting down to Dance Central is far more entertaining than XIV to me Smiley: laugh

2) Why are you forcing me to connect to the internet once a day?

I don't generally answer questions with questions, but... are you @#%^ing kidding me?

If anyone has any more reasonable ideas about why the language is so pointed, please feel free to chime in. I don't see what the fuss is about though.

Don't know if someone mentioned it so far but let me tell you this.

They said that to fix all this things in the xbox one players will require to download a patch.

So this is my question : How are you gonna trust (....YES i know how stupid it is to say you could ever trust a company like MS or Sony etc but go with the flow) them to not later on when they have enough people with consoles bring a new patch that will un do the whole thing over again? No one can be certain.

And lets not forget that every time you get a new game you need at least once to log in to be able to play it. What if later on way later on they stop support for xbox one? That would mean that the games for it will be useless. I know that the last part is for wayyyyy ahead in time but still or what if servers are down or something like that? As killua said i was wrong for this feature after re reading the article.

Any way even now i will not buy xbox one at least until it grows old and drops a few hundred bucks.

You're right, I don't think the average Joe should really be 'trusting' giant companies like Sony or Microsoft to begin with.

I doubt they will just scream 'gotcha!' and turn those restrictions back on after they sell some units, if that's your worry. There would be rioting in the streets! (just kidding gamers are too lazy)

Btw, I think your information is wrong that you need to log in every time you buy a game on the Xbone. You just need to connect once to patch your console, according to Microsoft.

Even so, still need to read the article i got it from but yea i do believe that at some point they will start turning their words again. Why do you doubt? Because MS said it? They also said all that other sh#@t but it seems they are taking them back.

edit: After reading the article again i agree you only need to connect once for the patch nothing else.

When the opportunity arise they will grab it. And i am not saying they will return everything in one go, no they are too smart for that small changes here and there will do the job.

Take for example piracy. After they sold enough xbox one and obviously people would be able to patch their xboxones to play copied games they will go out and say..."yea well....if you take a look at this numbers piracy has gone through the roof so we are gonna bring back the ...(add feature)...back so we can control piracy". There are so many ways they could get you and i expect nothing less from power/money hungry companies.

And i also don't like Sony even if they provided a good console this time they are the same with MS. While single player games are free to trade in order to play multi you would have to pay for the game etc i believe 10 bucks or something? Why is that any different than the mutliplayer xbox live has? Sony saw that xbox had good results so they took it. Between those 2 there is a complex relationship once MS was the "savior of consoles" against Sony and now Sony has taken that role. It will not surprise me if in the next PS5 they will have features like the ones xboxone has now.

Easy on the fanboyism there. A required 24 hour connection means that if your internet goes down (which will likely leave you quite bored), so does your Xbox (leaving you extra bored!). It means people who don't have access at all are screwed. It's a legitimate complaint considering there is no value to you as the consumer for the feature. As for the DRM, you can't look at it from the perspective of "PCs already don't do that" because the point of consoles is that they are made for accessible gaming--not gaming on lockdown. And really, if the main selling point for your console has nothing to do with playing video games, then yeah, that shows a colossal @#%^up in the way you think about your customers.

Basically, they very willfully and brazenly told players how they were going to take more of their money and make it harder to play games, and how they should just like it. "We have a system for people without an internet connection. It's called the 360." And paid people to pose as players and try to put a positive spin on it as damage control.

And in the end, it was clear that they were going to be crushed on the market based on these decisions, so they had to backpedal. Really, it doesn't get more telling than that.

Honestly you're like the only person I've heard defending/downplaying it.
-----------

Personally, I have no loyalty to any console--I want Nintendo to remain successful because they continue to innovate and produce quality first-party titles. But a console is just a machine, and honestly, my preference would be that there were no third console of any real merit. Console wars are NOT good for the gamer. They mean development studios spend more money developing and marketing their games for multiple platform releases instead of using that money to make games. Most of the tech that's moving consoles forward isn't even championed by the manufacturing company, but outside tech companies (Kinect being a possible exception). Where the money should be going is towards developing better games, but as history has always shown in tech, splitting the efforts both ways usually makes it harder for developers to do their work. So for one of the consoles to bomb badly would actually make me happy.

I'll get a PS4 when FFXIV comes out for it, but not before. I wonder when we will see the date for this. If they can swing it as a release title then - hell ya, PS4 here I come.

I still find the Kinect thing to be just too invasive. Sorry MS you need to allow people to unplug it if they want to. I don't care the reasoning (yes, I know my cell phone can spy on me all day). But a game console should be my friend, not a necessary evil.

I'll get the XBONE when either the next Elder Scrolls comes out or maybe if Rainbow Six: Patriots comes out sooner. Basically I'm going to have to see a game that I can't live without to make the purchase.

It's a gaming console, why should it be required to connect to the internet to play? What happens if there is an internet outage in your area for 3 or 4 days... or a week? That's the perfect time I would want to game, but before they changed their stance, I wouldn't have been able to. Or what if you move someplace new, or bring your console on a business trip with no internet access, or any other number of reasons. There is no reason that anyone should have to stay connected (even once every 24 hours) to play on a console.

Another reason is that it costs $100 more than the PS4. Combine that with their ploy to keep people from playing used games without a huge fee and the once per 24 hour internet connection, and I think it's pretty valid why people were annoyed.

I'm glad they did a 180 though, at least it shows that they aren't completely deaf to their consumers. I still think Sony is going to mop the floor with them in terms of sales figures, but it won't get completely buried, when before this change I think it would have.

From what I understand though the connection thing they talked about (which I guess is now revoked) also prevented people in some countries from getting an Xbox180 entirely because Xbox live would not be supported there, like Poland for example. Now I don't know if that is true (The article is from Sweden's biggest newspaper, but lol @ their credibility), but if it is that would be another pretty messed up effect due to the online requirement.
