Enforced brutally? What's brutal about it? Wint even allowed more responses on it. I didn't want this thread to spiral into a silly debate on a free trial that is definitively NOT in the launch plans.

As to forced level sync being like CoP. I hope so! This game needs some challenge to it. When they uncapped CoP, they took all the challenge out and just made it easy mode. That was even after they had already made it easier twice when they added in the trigger items you could use on most of the bosses, and decreased the overall difficulty of some of the encounters. So yeah, if it makes things more challenging, I'm all for it.

I just felt like right from the start, Killua was being ridiculed to the point of almost bullying.

I loved FFXI's CoP storyline material. I loved doing Promys to help noobs get passed the very first hurdle of the content. I loved developing strategies for rag-tag groups getting passed the hard fight, especially that pot fight. (I was really good at getting the fight done successfully, without the recommended group setup. Very fun indeed!)

I do hope they will be challenging, but I do not want them to be ridiculous. For example: The airship fight with Ultima and Omega weapon in FFXI. That fight was really hard, and it wasn't even that meaningful! It was the biggest hurdle (to me anyway) for most players to pass as it required a specific setup. If a hard fight were to happen, I would like it during a critical situation, like the Alexander fight in ToAU. But I also want the party to be able to be dynamic over a specific setup.

As far as CoP content, I did enjoy the difficulty of all level Sync areas in the game and CoP, However I did not like the fact that if you were higher level, and you basically had to keep a cache of powerful items for every job at every level. At one point I had 3 alternate lvl 1s with mog house upgraded storage just to keep up. And the extremely long time it took to transfer items back and forth. I know that I spent days just doing this at higher levels (I haven't played FFXI recently so it could have changed, im speaking of when I played it) With the way I hope level sync is in the game, all your current gear is relevant, your stats just get lowered to bring you in line for the level. You could just have a slight edge in stats due to your much higher level but thats it. That way you only need your current gear to be relevant.

Gear stats level down with you, so NO need to keep multiple sets. FATE's below your level work this way too. A big Level Sync button pops up on the side of the screen, you click it, that's it.

SE could fix this easily by either offering a character reset feature for 1.0 characters, OR by giving you the choice when you create your character to say which storyline you would prefer to have (calamity survivor vs. new adventurer).

Right now, I'm in a no-win scenario in terms of whether to play as my old character or start over from scratch.

To me, it would seem weird. "You saved the world five years ago. Beat the Garlean General, and now you're a nobody with no strength/reputation"

So is there a time skip between the FFXIV games?

Even 1.0 characters are going to have to go through all of the class/job quests again, because everything in the game has changed. The only thing 1.0 characters will keep are levels, gil, items, etc.

So, it's really not strange at all. Levels are just levels... you can get them back incredibly easily.

There are also many players who maybe took their 1.0 characters to level 20 or 30, and then quit. They didn't hit level 50, or play through the storyline, or really survive the calamity... for these players, having the standard "new player" storyline would make a lot more sense.

Having the option to select your storyline would work both ways.

I'm actually kind of shocked that Yoshi-P hasn't considered this.

Yup, it's been 5 years and 1.0 characters were shot into a time bubble or something. I can't wait to see the "hey welcome back" storyline.

Sooo, how did this happen? Did they play out this event or was it just told that was happening?

I believe the new job quests are quite different. Quests like the White Mage storyline had to be re-written due to a lot of their quests referencing the coming disaster. Then you have fights like the BLM final quest which will need to be redone due to the mechanics of the fight and how the BLM's spell list has quite changed from 1.0.

There was a unique 1.x storyline that started after Yoshi-P took over. The storyline of ARR is a direct continuation of that storyline.

Players were given time to complete all of the missions of that story, which led up to the critical moment of the Garleans invading and Dalamud reaching its closest point to the planet... and then, right after shutting down the servers, SE released this final cutscene for everyone to watch:

Watch this. Consider that party a representation of what happened to 1.0 characters.

And this is why we need to have the ability to choose which storylines we see.

It should be up to the players to decide which story best fits the background of their characters. People who are invested in the 1.0 storyline should have a way to start over on new player servers without giving all of that up.

Again, kind of shocked that SE completely overlooked this.

Can't you just make a new character and experience both, just like you said? What's the point of having a legacy character that doesn't have the added background? I know you said you'd rather start over WITH the added storyline, but can't you just level another class for that? Or is everything leveled up?

I would rather just walk from point A to point B once, so I can then move on to point C more efficiently.

Having to do everything in this game twice just to get the correct storyline would not be fun.

The End of an Era cut scene is seriously one of the best sequences I've seen in a long time. SE at their best. The first thing I did in beta phase 1 was go to Louisoix's spot and /frown.

It's actually the reason I went from mildly looking forward to the update of the game, to being really excited about the future of XIV as a whole.

My 1.0 character still has plenty of jobs I could level, but I would rather start completely from scratch. I would prefer to play among all-new players, without as much pressure to rush into endgame. My wife will be playing, and she wants to play on a new server. I have some RL friends who will be playing on a new server. And, our ultra cool ZAM linkshell will be on a new server.

I don't care about keeping my items or levels. I can get all of that back easy enough.

What I can't get back are the two years I spent on my character, and my investment in his personal story. There is no reason why SE shouldn't implement a way for players to keep their unique stories, if those players deem those stories to be more valuable than their gear, gil and levels.

I spent a vast amount of time playing different characters on different games and I don't suggest that I wasted my time on any of these games nor do I look for some sort of compensation. They aren't pulling you arm to play their game, and I'm kinda glad I waited to play until now.

Edit: except for the fact that I'm completely confused about everything, thats a downside heh.

Considering they are giving you a one-time chance to completely change the appearance/race/sex of your character, as well as the chance to change servers, I agree with you. I've actually read several threads on the beta forums of people expressing the same sentiment, so it's not just one or two people. All I can suggest is giving them feedback on it. Hopefully it's something they will realize and address.

The story didn't seem too complex. The 'time bubble to save u' was straight out of some children's anime like Fairy Tail, or Naruto.

It's just a cop out and I doubt they will dwell on it that much. Probably a scene explaining why they're 5 years in the future and that you got saved by a time bubble, then you'll be on the same path as everyone else.

If they gave old accounts a large unique story, that would seem unfair for new players who couldn't access it.

(What I'm saying is... it's probably not worth worrying about that much)

I'm not looking for any kind of compensation... not really sure what I'd be compensated for?

As far as wasting my time leveling two characters... for me, with the way I play, that would be a waste of time. I have zero interest in leveling two different characters. In a game like GW2, where each character is just one job, then I could see the value in leveling alts. For Final Fantasy, though -- where one character can level all the jobs -- I just don't see the point. I'd rather have one character will all the jobs, than have one character with half, and another character with half.

SE could make a ton of players happy simply by adding one more step to the character selection screen: Storyline preference.

There's no reason not to give players that option.

Right, but without that scene, my character's story won't make any sense if he just suddenly waltzes into town for the very first time, and not even he seems to know that he survived the calamity.

Some people obsess over DPS. I obsess over storyline.

Do we have an idea of how exactly things scale down? In FFXI, it wasn't a simple mathematical scaling. It appeared that gear would become the equivalent to a particular NQ item for the level range that you were synced to.

For a large scale event like FATE, that may not be a big deal. But if its a small party and you're challenging a particularly difficult dungeon or boss fight, it could become an issue if you're being held back my subpar gear.

The way the game is being designed, I don't think the best gear is at all required to beat the leveling dungeons... you just need a basic strategy and some able-bodied party members who know what they're doing.

At endgame, when gear quality really starts to matter, then level synch won't be an issue.
