Hello! My first thread. Haven't seen a recent thread pertaining to this feature exclusively so I thought I'd throw this up here.

According to the Beta Road Map here, it looks like we will be able to stress test some of the Housing features.

Concept Art
Video Clip of the 3 House sizes

What we know
Quote:
There will be one housing area for each of the three city states of Gridania, Limsa Lominsa and Ul'dah and once any of these instances are filled a new instance will open up. This means there is no limit on how many plots of land are in the system.

Quote:
It has been said that in order to buy a medium sized plot of land you will need to spend the equivalent of levelling a class to 50 on quests three times and put all the gil you earned into your house.

Quote:
These are free company housing as well as individual housing, however free company housing will make it into the game first.

Quote:
Houses will be highly customisable and expandable. For example you can change the styling and colour of the roof, you can move objects and furniture around, you can add trophies and decorations to the rooms and hang banners around. Each house will have a yard which will also be customisable. Here you will be able to place a chocobo stable which will give you the ability to breed and raise chocobos.

Limsa Lominsa 1
Limsa Lominsa 2
Limsa Lominsa 3

Now, my only real MMO experiences with years of time were FFXI and WoW. Only one of those games had housing, so I wanted to pose a question to you guys;

What other online games have you guys played that had a housing feature and how was it unique from others? Anything that would be interesting to see/not see in ARR?

Edit: Fixed formatting and adding links I've run into. Post anything you find and we can compile this for all Housing info! :)

Star Wars Galaxies had exceptional housing, from what I remember.

You could sell items from "NPC"s inside, display damn near everything. Armor, Trophies, weapons, anything.

My friend even made a "dungeon" in the basement he kept "prisoners" in.

And you could open the house to other people or keep it closed. I loved exploring other peoples houses. And you would have Mannequins or NPC's inside which could sell your wares.

I'd like to see that with Retainers, and a way to have mannequins that would display your armor/AF.

As a note: All this SWG was pre-NGE, a long long time ago. In a galaxy far away. So this is to the best of my memory.

Also curious your source for it coming in P4? I had heard it most likely wouldn't be around til ~6 months into release. And I saw nothing in the linked article.

When I used to collect furniture for my Mog House in FFXI, I would occasionally joke that it was turning into Animal Crossing: Final Fantasy Edition. (Incidentally, I just picked up a copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf recently. If anyone wants to friend me, PM me and I'll give you both my 3DS & Dream Suite numbers.) Then a friend started doing the same thing in Phantasy Star Universe.

If they do FC or LS housing for ARR, I'd like to see some kind of bank or vault within said housing. One of my friends is planning on sharing his food from Culinarian, and it would be convenient for him to have a central spot to drop it off.

Fastest thing I could find. I could dig some more if you'd like, I do recall reading about it somewhere.

Something else that could be nice would be an upgraded version of gardening. After all, nothing quite spruces up a house like a garden.

LOTRO had player housing, and it sounds like ARR's will be very similar to theirs, which isn't a bad thing. I also remember the mog house in ffxi. I quit Aion before they implemented their housing, but it sounds similar to that of LOTRO

I have great thoughts on decorating my new house in FFXIV, but then I remember the reality of my mog house in FF11:

1. Christmas trees and Pumpkins all year round
2. Empty white pots all around the place for the elements
3. random chests here and there

I was just like those folks who keep the X-mas lights up all year round.

I liked my house (as spartan as it was) in FFXI.

There was a reason to go there though because that's where you changed jobs and got stored armor and all of that.

These houses seem to be a bit more fleshed out, and I like the idea of a neighborhood, I just don't know if I'll be using it that much. I'm excited to see them though.

I think it would be really cool if certain housing areas offered certain bonuses... for instance, gridania would allow you to plant trees around your yard that you could harvest from, Uldah would allow you to add in small rocky outcrops to mine from, and LL would allow you to add a small stream to your yard that you could fish from. I think that would be fun and add another small layer to DoH classes.

I'd like to own my own house a'la Mog House in XI, though I never really spent much time (or money) in making it seem ... homely.

I am really excited to see some sort of shared Free Company HQ type area though. I hope they flesh that out nicely with areas devoted to FC member crafters able to set up their own "at cost price" shops to assist other FC members. Maybe a trophy room showcasing the FC's achievements in the PvE aspects of the game. Some nice little area that really boosts the feeling of belonging to a community in game.

A linkshell/free company will be sick, like everyone has been saying places to sell your crafted gear in thers would be awsome. I am really excited they added a gil sink into this game ,now i have some thing to spend my billions of gil on, that ill make from my HQ Materia melded jewelry!

I don't have a ton of experience with housing, but DC Universe just added it about 6 months ago right before I lost complete interest in that game.

One cool aspect of it was that you could give access to your house to anyone so they could come in too... you could decorate with furniture found as drops from raids and other instances... and they even made a 1v1 PvP arena that you could queue up for that took place in one of the combatants houses... their houses were kind of bland though, every house had the same exact layout with slightly different themes and furniture...

But I did like how you could have a mailbox in your room and crafting tables, vendors to buy supplies and fix your armor at, and other items you could unlock to upgrade your armor using marks (rewards from doing content.)

But in DCUO they quickly turned a good thing into a grind and turned me off completely... having to run dungeons constantly just to "Pay" for your armor upgrades or they would go away within a certain amount of time.

I'm hopeful that FFXIV will do it the right way... so far I'm thoroughly impressed with the game.

Yeah it's cool, but did you see the concept art for Uldah housing? It looks awesome!

Yoshi has mentioned that everything you can do in XI will be available in XIV. Also, He definitely plans on having lots and lots of recipes for things to decorate your home with. The biggest thing I think, will be the ability to build stables in your front yard and breed your own chocobos. You may also have one of your retainers act as an item vendor and you can sell things in your home as long as you have it open to the public.

Man thats good to hear, im really excited for crafting and breeding chocobos, it would be cool if you got thropies for killing end game monsters you can display, maybe they could have endgame monsters drop materials used to make super awsome furniture. "Come inside and try out my behemoth paw chair" "you see that candle holder thats made of real behemoth teeth!" Something along the lines of that

During Open beta we will be able to test the FC Housing, that is the large housing at the end of the video linked.
I just want the small house to start and an upgraded version of FFXI gardening, with a little gardening plot. I don't mind if we get pot too as an addition.
