Some simple advice for general upgrades:

Look into lower latency RAM modules that run a higher clock speed.
Find a CPU with a higher clock speed as well as more cores (if possible).
Get a GPU with higher clock speed and more VRAM.
Look into better cooling options.
If you are comfortable with your cooling options and have good quality (by this I mean reliable and durable materials) components, consider overclocking.

I am running a quad-core CPU at 3.7GHz (4.1 when I overclock it). It is liquid cooled and even at full load runs well below temps that would start to be worry-some.
I run very low latency RAM however I am not overclocking it until I upgrade to an open-circuit liquid cooling option. I am also only running 4x 1GB modules atm. I will increase this to the maximum once I have secured a better cooling option to maximize the performance increase.
My GPU is an EVGA NVIDIA GTX 660 Ti FTW+ Edition. I could further over clock it, however once again I am waiting until I can liquid cool all the components with one system. At that time I will probably upgrade to a 7xx or 8xx series GPU (or whatever is current at the time) and get the liquid-cooling ready version at that time.

In the meantime, the only game I have found that can show me I can still use an upgrade is Civilization V, running max settings across 3 monitors on a Huge map once I hit mid-game.

My personal goal is to be able to do that and experience no-lag, and hopefully, less then 5 seconds between turns even once I hit the Future Era.

One big thing about upgrading though. Sometimes an upgrade wont be noticeable. All of the components of your machine work in tandem. If you have a powerful CPU that can handle a **** ton of calculations at amazing speed, you may not be able to see it shine unless your RAM can handle the load of sending and receiving information to and from the CPU. If your motherboards bus is slow it can also bottleneck your system. Maximizing the effect of an upgrade is more about balancing the system to handle everything at a relatively even pace. I once increased a PC's performance by underclocking a persons CPU. It's all very complicated but there is much online about really maximizing a PC's performance.

Still your score was excellent, even higher then mine. You really don't need anything at all for now.

FFXIV isn't RAM intensive. Unless you're encoding movies and rendering 3D images while you play it, you're going to get the smallest benefit from RAM. I do agree with the 2nd and 3rd statements.

The most important part of the equation is the CPU. Current generation GPUs are all bottlenecked by CPU performance. Just as a reference, my old GTX 480 was CPU bottlenecked up to the 4.1 overclock you mentioned.

Pretty much this. The only upgrade inside the case that you'll get obvious performance from is a CPU with a moderate overclock. Other than that your only options are outside the case. Mechanical keyboard, a better mouse, a better monitor... ect. ect.

That said, even if you do get a better CPU and overclock it you'll probably only see better benchmark scores. If the benchmark is accurate and translates to how well the game runs(which remains to be seen), you're not gonna notice if you improve your average FPS from 90 to 120.

Anyone here running 2400+ freq RAM?

Would you mind running the benchmark at 2400 then at 1333 and post the differences between the two at 1080p/Max?

You're probably right. It's probably just getting confused because of the dueling graphics chipsets. If you want to be sure, use device manager to disable the on-board graphics chipset and try it again.

Go to the Nvida software program and there should be a setting in there where it allows you to manually turn on the GPU for the benchmark. You should have the option to either use GeForce all the time or just for certain programs. Sorry I use AMD HDs so, I dont know exactly where you would find it.

Let me know if you need more help, ill hoop on my gf laptop and figure it out for ya

For your Amusement. I already know that my video card is a huge choke point, but I wanted to see just how BADLY an otherwise functional machine could fail this test.

You're probably right. It's probably just getting confused because of the dueling graphics chipsets. If you want to be sure, use device manager to disable the on-board graphics chipset and try it again.

Disabling your integrated graphics requires one of two things, both of which will void your warranty.

You can:

1) Modify your bios. This is not as simple as simply entering the bios and changing a setting. You need to flash a bios which is not supported and voids your warranty. Not only that, but you can turn your laptop into a glorified paperweight in the process if you don't know what you're doing. I don't recommend this.

2) Use modified GPU drivers. This is much less dangerous in terms of doing damage to your laptop, but depending on the manufacturer; will also void the warranty.

Your laptop is just switching back and forth between the integrated graphics in times of low graphical load and the discreet GPU when the graphics are more demanding. This is normal and your benchmark is likely being measured while using your GeForce. The results page isn't graphically demanding so you switch back to integrated graphics and that is likely why it's picking up that info in your benchmark result.

That said, nVIdia's Optimus technology(what I'm guessing you have) can cause issues with various programs. I personally had issues with it while trying to play FFXI. POL would crash the moment that my laptop tried to switch from the launcher to the game. I also ran into issues where Steam would tell me that my GPU wasn't capable of running certain games because only the integrated graphics were being recognized.

I'd start by updating your drivers to the most recent(non-beta) version. If that doesn't solve the problem then just compare your scores to other people using similar GPUs. If the benchmark is actually running on your GeForce card then there is really no issue. If it bothers you or if you find that it's not switching like it's supposed to then your safest option is #2 above.

Looking for some advice on computer upgrades or setting changes! Thanks!

You average 90 FPS and are rated to be able to max everything comfortably. Why are you looking to upgrade other than increasing e-peen benchmark numbers?

Sort of, he wasn't on the maximum preset.

I really hate the way their scoring system works.

7000+ = max the game easily, yet the score you get depends on the settings the benchmark runs at - which makes no sense.

Run the benchmark on low settings and it will give you a much higher score, it's rather misleading since their scoring table seems to imply that 7,000+ means playable eon max settings, when in reality it seems that your score dictates how well you can play on the CURRENT settings.

Example. Laptop got 6257 on Maximum @ 1080P.

It defaulted me to "High Laptop" though @ 720P which I scored 8362 on, which states I can play the game easily on the highest settings, whereas my 6257 score implies otherwise.

EDIT: Switched to the settings he used and my score dropped much lower than usual - got 5506.

I think it may be due to screen resolution he used, it's not the native 16:9 ratio that my monitor is,

EDIT: Maybe not, I changed it to 720P and got 50.887 fps - very strange since I averaged 50.182 at 1080P on maxed settings.
Not sure why lowering the graphic settings isn't raising my framerate any. Laptop is plugged in, and on "Samsung High Performance" preset, wouldn't expect it to throttle itself for what it deems a light load, but it seems to be doing so, that or Optimus is deeming low settings to be so undemanding that its using the integrated card, whereas on max it used discrete.

So I was just playing around a bit and decided to turn off all shadows, the result were incredible on my score.

i5 760 @ 2.8
Radeon HD 5850

No overclocking on either. Did three benchmarks on each setting.

On max setting, give or take 5850.

On max setting with shadows turned down to Normal instead of high, 6150 or so.

On max setting minus shadows for me and NPC's, right around 5950.

Obviously it puzzles me why no shadows scores lower than normal shadows?

Any insights maybe?

Can I ask which GeForce you have? I want to get a laptop for my gf for 2.0 but I'm not sure if a GeForce x60M or x50M will do, from one post I have a feeling a 640M will be too slow, but a 650/660 might be good... Maybe even a 750M.

Anyone else have laptop scores to share?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Guessing you meant me?

The scores I posted were a GTX 770M.

Running the 2920xm stock at the moment and the 7970m with a slight bump of 920/1400. I'll post results for 4.4ghz and 1050/1500 when I stop being lazy.
