Questing too much?Follow

Does anyone else think there were too many quests while playing and not enough grinding?
One of the main reasons many tanks dont know how to hold aggro is because there carried to 20 with a ridiculous amount of quests.. I was quite annoyed myself once Icompleted a quest and 4 more appeared.

You only get the quests once though. Those that are the tanks now may not be the tanks later one, they may be busy levelling DPS classes whereas those that did level DPS may have switched to tanking.

Having a lot of quests is much better than mindless grinding, and as said above you can only do most quests once, say you want to level a class from level one again.. You will either have to go to another city and do the low quests or grind all the way, all depends what you wanna do really!

Some quests have enemies you have to tank hits too, so you may have just got some bad/lazy tanks, unlucky really.

Quests stop around 25-30 after that I noticed it was more about the grind.

I did think there were alot of quest, I ran around as my CNJ and started all of them between the 3 cities. I completed majority of them with my CNJ but only turned in some of them. Then i went back and turned in some with my ARN. I still have a good bit of green checks on my list which i am saving to turn in with THA. I find this to be great for getting some quick exp at low starting levels.

That is the whole reason for all of those low level quests for your characters. The city quests are for your new character they force you to explore the whole city so you can attune yourself to all the ports.

Not at all actually found that their wasn't enough, especially when I started raising my CJN and I guess this applies to other mage class expect ARC the exp boost is godsend at early levels.

Also they don't have a tutorial about how to tank, so questing or grinding wouldn't help anyone to be honest you start partying at lv15 you either get it or you don't by then.

Tanking was never rocket science. People used to say the same thing in XI too. Suddenly somehow, despite having 5-6 other jobs at max level, they figured that if you somehow skipped Valkurm's starting area on a new job, that once you got it to max level you didnt know how to play your job. While in reality, the mechanics of the job are not only retardedly simple to grasp, they are also fundamentally diffirent later on than what you had early on.

1) Use the right gear and abilities to grab enmity off others
2) Dont take too many risks with setups or gear that hurt mp consumption of yourself and the party
3) Save your stuns and long-timer defensive abilities for when you truly need them.

If someone doesnt know how to play a job after running around on it for a day, then they either are horrible at gaming, or they didnt care enough to atleast read up on their abilities a little.

I've seen people on XI who for instance were main White Mage for 3-4 years of gaming time, and who still absolutely sucked at it. It's not that they didnt learn how to play their job, they were just bad at playing games to start with.

That said, it's probably not that Tanks do not know how to old Aggro. It's most likely the DD's that don't know how to hold back for the tank. Holding hate, especially in such a badly balanced start of the game, is about working together as a group.

I agree, I do some of both and I like it the way it is right now, you dont have to do quests if you do not want too.. I have a friend who like questing and he will pretty much do that as much as he can.

Quests are part of the grind.

Said no one ever.... You do realize that grinding is a negative term, right? It is defined as "Hard dull work". So you're saying there's a lack of Hard Dull Work in the video game? Good riddance.

There needs to be MORE questing. When I went to level a 3rd DoM I had to move to a new city since all my low level quest where gone. Who wants to start grinding mob at lvl 5 to get exp? And as far as the tanks not knowing what to do, there is no tutorial on how threat works. I picked up on several things that are not explained in this game but because I've been gaming and tanking forever I knew right away. #1 the game has a built in threat meter. #2 The meter tells you where you are on the threat list. #3 The monster list tells you which mob hates you when it switched from a blue/green circle to a yellow yield sign to a flashing orange to a RED I WANT TO KILL you sign. #4 A red arrows shoot to you when you take hate. #5 Mobs that are red have been tagged and are angry at someone, orange mobs are just angry and are coming to help but will attack anyone how does the first action toward them.

No tell me, did you know all this? Is this explained in the game? And what new player to ARR or even 2.0 will understand this? I had quite a few WAR in AF who tanked horridly.

I tend to enjoy my questing. Once the Early access hits I will be feeling much more relaxed in getting things done. I can savor my quest dialogue and ease my way up the levels.

I'm a sucker for lore and story, so the more time I can immerse myself in that and the less I have to do repetition without story, the better.

I don't think grinding would help the problem honestly, if you're grinding you're most likely fighting one on one with the mob and that doesn't help any learning to manage hate since most dungeons you're fighting more than 1 mob at a time. My roommate partied with a Lala GLD who refused to use flash when there was multiple mobs because he insisted he couldn't rank more than 1 mob which led to the CNJ pretty much tanking the entire fight. Grinding wouldn't solve that problem it's just people need to learn their jobs and such

Tanking has nothing to do with how you level.

Tanking is a mindset.

You either are a tank, or you are not a tank. Career tanks know exactly what I'm talking about. We read the tooltips, we see the connections, and after a few fights with the game's combat we've gotten a feel with what needs to be done to be successful. We're aware of what's going on around us at all times, or at least strive to push ourselves to that awareness. You need to be able to multitask well and react in a timely fashion to something happening. Conversely we're our worst critics when it comes to tanking.

New people that wish to become tanks and are terrible are because of four reasons:
  • 1) They don't read the tooltips on their abilities. They're ill prepared for what happens in an unexpected moment.
  • 2) They lack situational awareness. You can't tunnel vision as a tank. Period.
  • 3) They can't multitask well. Tanking requires more attention then damage dealing by far, and even moreso than healing at times.
  • 4) Most importantly, they refuse any sort of criticism. If you can't accept any help (in case something you missed, overlooked, or didn't understand) then you shouldn't be tanking in the first place.

Grinding doesn't teach you a damn thing about how to tank. Neither does leveling by quests or levequests.

Being in a group, do the opposite of the above four bullet points, and practice a lot. That's what makes a good tank.

I'm not really sure at this point. The reason I'm not sure is because these quests are more for the tutorial levels. I don't think that you'll be bombarded with quests all the way to 50 so I'll say no.

I remember reading somewhere that Yoshi said he wanted getting to 15-20 to be easy hence all the quests. I don't think getting to 50 will be trivial, but I'm sure there will be those who do it within a week of launch.

There always are those people. Hell, people did that in 1.0 when we had the Fatigue system! YOU CAN'T STOP THEM!

Just as an aside I need around 350,00 exp to get to level 43 on my legacy character.

I don't think I'll be getting all of that via quests.
