They should shut down some of there FFXI servers that are probably going to lose a butt ton of people because of FFXIV and just make those servers available for the FFXIV people.

That would be like trying to install Windows 8 on the Apollo Guidance Computer Smiley: laugh

Bahaha... I wasn't aware of the issues or hardness of this... I've never dealt with servers at all so I wouldn't know ;(

Totally true! I try to use it whenever I can. Makes things MUCH easier. I dread it when I can't use VM servers.

I wonder if SE uses any VMs.

I could be wrong but I see this as more of a heads up, a Hey, there is a possibility that there'll be a queue at some point.

Given that we'll have less than the amount of people that were in open beta (because not everyone who played beta will buy the game or even ever intended to) and queues last weekend weren't all that bad at all I don't think there'll be too many issues *fingers crossed*

Are we going to have to pick servers again or do we go to the ones we had in beta?

Queue wasn't bad it was the 3 hours the server would not have a que because it was closed. Then it was the whole server not accepting people because it was full.,

I doubt it. Game servers require more system resources than most enterprise servers do. While VMs are great at handling large volumes of users on a low demand website or enterprise program, they do not do as well with large volume high demand. For those situation, you really want direct hardware access, not running through a VM layer.

"If a large volume of players attempt to login to the game simultaneously, certain players may receive the following message: “This World is currently full. Players in queue: ##.” If you receive this message, we ask that you please wait until your login is processed.

In addition, in order to avoid server congestion related issues from multiple characters concentrating in the starting areas, we may implement restrictions on logins and/or the creation of new characters for a period of time after the servers open to the public."

Bolded the relevant bits that indicate SE think this is a possibility, not neccessarily an inevitability.

It's the same thing that they did for Phase 4, just let it sit and you'll get in eventually. Once I was booted when the servers went down and when I logged back in it said there were 197 ahead of me and not 3 minutes later I was in.

I had the same thing happen except it was 36 people. I just logged out and back in and I got in just fine.

I think your being overly optimistic, hell they couldnt handle getting everyone in for phase 4. They have to earn my trust on this issue, and they havent yet

Intrinsically EA will have less people. In order to get EA you have to spend money...Open Beta was a free for all (literally and figuratively)...And, if they've added room to the servers for new accounts, a lot of people have already made accounts on the servers they want. I still think lock downs will happen, but I think it will take at least 6 hours before it happens. So set an alarm clock and if you really have to get on a server, plan for it to be a late night/early morning.

How many people pre ordered? How many people do they expect for launch? Do we have any idea of what their expectations are?

I was looking at what the populations were for other games and I was surprised things were as low as they were. Do we know what ff14 was like at launch?

I feel like... they are going to crush the 150k mark that they had at open beta, but I have no evidence to back that up. It just feels like it has a ton of good buzz. I guess I know a couple people who weren't in beta but are planning to play at launch.

100% agreement. We do some heavy duty stuff at work and we require that direct hardware access for it. Day to day stuff, personal projects, and management that wants isolation from the main servers all use VMs. I can just imagine what would happen if ANY online game used VMs. Quite simply, it couldn't be done, not feasibly.

To answer my own question about pre orders. VG charts has the pre-order status at 116k for the ps3 version. (http://www.vgchartz.com/preorders/41497/USA/) I suspect this will be a big MMO launch. It's been 3 years since a numbered final fantasy launched. I suspect there are lots of people chomping at the bit for this. It's not like a numbered game at all. But that's a big reason I'm so excited for it.

^ This. It was the same thing for me during phase 4. I was usually up in the 80's to low 100's. By the time i would go grab another drink and come back majority of the time i was already logged in or damn near in. I don't find these to be a huge headache, more like intermission.

I can verify that some games at least use virtual servers. I believe LOTRO idevs had mentioned using them when I used to play that heavily. I have also sold VMWare to gaming companies along with their hardware, though I can't confirm they used that for the live servers.
