2 pages on this? really?

toon sounds dumb, but who cares. i suppose it is interesting as a quick way to determine if Player X is an old XI player or not. But again, seems irrelevant.

actually, when i see it I just think of Ender's Game /shrug.

What makes this game so different than many other MMOs out there? Aside from the passion people have for the FF lore, the character models are nice but nothing ground breaking or breath taking..

At least they don;t look like they were designed by "people with a socially unacceptable desire for underage people", like 99% of all Asian games.

I think you just hit part of it. The characters are beautiful, not sexy. Many of the issues I have with the design of MMOs involves putting the females in tin foil bikinis. In FFXI and FFXIV, both men and women have the choice of being subjected to the humiliation of subligar.... or they can be covered head to toe in a giant yellow burka thing instead.

The FF MMOs have a respect for body type that is lacking in a lot of other MMOs.

DPS is used in FFXI, just not as a synecdoche as it is in other games. I suspect this has to do with the speccing system used in other games, where a particular character can only have on set of specs set on it, so you spec it out for maximum DPS and just call it that from then on. As in, "my DPS guy." Then it's shortened to "my DPS" because everyone knows what you're talking about.

Bolded and underlined the part that really matters. With that said, I don't use toon either. Sounds childish to me and always has. Hell, I didn't even call it toon in WoW. I'd call it my char or simply by its class name, as in my Warrior, etc.. To each his own, I guess. It's not like the first time I heard it, I didn't know what the hell they were talking about. Thought they were talking about either their favorite cartoon or their favorite song (tune? you know how the kewl kids are with their words, right?) We don't have to worry about it being misunderstood now, so everything else is just preference.

I've been rolling toons since EQ launched and I'm not changing. Sorry it bugs you all so much.

I call my character "dude".

I've always called my characters dudes regardless of their gender. I guess cause I've never placed a sense of self with my characters. Never "I look awesome in this armor", its always "my dude looks awesome"

Back on topic, Toon has been a term in games forever. Lots of people hate it for some reason I'll never understand. Its just vernacular at this point.

Humiliation? I rock my subs with pride. Not sure if you remember, but Vir and Femina subligar was a status symbol in XI for ballers. They were the type of items that made a statement when you wore them. A statement like "I get loads of fanny" Smiley: sly

Anyhow, this thread is a trip. Bunch of people who couldn't care less what people think of them based on what they call their avatar and the rest in fear that someone might think they're immature for playing a video game. I don't understand how anyone could look at a baby behemoth or a pudgy puk and not think that isn't cartoonish. Come off it Smiley: oyvey

Don't feel bad OP, I don't like the word 'toon' either. We aren't playing a western game with "cartoon" characters, we are playing an eastern game with well detailed "realistic" characters.

It's silly, i know, but it is a pet peeve of mine.

Someone says 'toon' I immediate assume they came from wow. Usually true too.

Anywho...you can play your 'toons', i'll play my character.

Lol, that's kind of funny, when someone doesn't like the word toon, I assume it's because they started with WoW.

Reminds me too much of WoW.

I just say "character". Sure it's 5 letters longer to type, but it doesn't bug me.

My Miqote is a character; he's part of something big, something that is built and grows with and around him. He's a player in the virtual stage.
Calling him a "toon" cheapens everything about him and his experiences.

I've never liked that phrase. It sounds stupid and is hardly descriptive of what a modern MMO character looks like.

I have a personal aversion to 'toon' because my own artistic background has just led to a lot of outsider assumption on the media. Basically, there's more to animation than just making some Disney movie and I always hated that how even though I was always drawing knights, dragons, and all sorts of other fantasy things with the occasional blood and action, people never could make the jump of animation into more adult things not overtly pornographic like hentai. An old comment I got a lot as a kid was simply, "Oh, like pokemon?" It just irritated me because I never drew to fundamentally placate people under the age of 12 and it always felt quite apparent their predisposition and bias would keep them from wanting to watch more mature animations.

In general, I understand both sets of terms from XI and WoW, but overall I think I just prefer XI's take. I also prefer character over avatar, but that preference also has some RP roots for me where sometimes I'd be playing multiple characters on the same MUSH.

Detailed, realistic compared to what?

The character models are nice but no more detailed/realistic than those in EQ2, Vanguard or a number of other MMOs.

The fact that it's an eastern game only means that there are cultural aesthetics than some may prefer but that doesn't make them "better"

Well, the fact that 90% of the characters are fully clothed is a big start.

At least western MMOs don't put teh face of 10 year old girls on Carmen Elektra's body..

Hate to generalize, but I call em how I see em...

I think asians tend to make almost every female 'character' look really young. Even going back to XI, probably the most popular female characters all looked like 10 yr old girls. Hell, even the old ones looked like kids(Prishe) Smiley: laugh

It wouldn't be bad if the 10 year old faces had appropriate bodies or at least didn't parade them in highly revealing costumes.

While western games are notorious for sexualizing female characters at least they're not sexualizing 10 year old female characters.

#98 Aug 30 2013 at 10:21 PM Rating: Excellent
Prishe was't particularly sexualized - she's spunky and has a potty mouth, but she's not flaunting her goods like other female NPCs (Lady Lilith and the Hips of Doom, for example.) She wears biker shorts, for crying out loud. There's a lore specific reason she's a forty something year old with the appearance of a twelve year old. I guess cuz I'm not into lolicon I can't see the sexual attraction of a forty year old going on twelve, especially since she has the maturity of a twelve year old.

(I personally thought Ulmia was the more interesting and well developed of that duo.)

Lion is 19 or 20 so putting her in the Faye Valentine outfit worked. Aphmau had a peekaboo belly button, but fully clothed arms and legs, and at sixteen she was at the ripe age to be considered sexy (not that she likes the player character that way, what with the huge crush on Luzaf.) I believe that Lilith is around 20, and Lilsette also in the 16 age range (hard to tell because neither use a standard model, much like Prishe.) Arcelia, the latest FFXI companion chick, is probably 16-17.
#99REDACTED, Posted: Aug 30 2013 at 10:23 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) No idea what any of what you are talking about means but the general theme of pre-teen sexualization, regardless of the "plot" or "story" or setting, is wrong.

"Char" is only 4 characters. If you can shorten Cartoon to Toon, surely, you can shorten Player Character to Char.
