This has not been a "normal" launch or "average".
You're right, this is better than average. The servers may be capped but people have been able to play all week long. Maybe not everyone, and God knows this isn't perfect, but the fact is the game is running, and it plays well. The only issue these is is that there is t enough room for everyone, which they're fixing.
Edited, Aug 30th 2013 10:59pm by Ryklin The reason it's "running" is that they capped access to servers to a paltry 5,000 - and with no AFK auto boot.
Of course the servers are "running" - they're not being taxed.
Between all the down down, registration errors, caps on logins/character creations, customer support disasters, etc. this is one of the worst launches.
Maybe in Asia it's normal but by western standards its FUBAR.
I don't think you're remembering correctly. I distinctly remember WoW, GW2, SW:TOR, and Rift, just to name a few, being as bad or worse than this launch for the first couple weeks, if not longer. They all went through similar growing pains. Even though SE has had to cap their servers, they've kept them up with remarkably little downtime, and those who play are playing a very polished and smooth game. All in all, it's one of the better launches I've seen.
Sure, it's not perfect, and there are some bumps in the road. But it's not terrible, and certainly not FUBAR.
