I'm pretty sure the stormrage server in wow has around 20k characters (and is old as dirt) and these guys can do 5000....what a joke.

And WoW has millions of players. No **** they have better servers.

Idle timers don't depend on if your character is actually moving but rather if you are pushing buttons.

So simply running into a wall with autorun won't prevent you from logging out.

I mean, I'm being slightly presumptuous. If Blizzard, the folks that made SWToR, and a whole slew of other MMO's could figure it out, so can SE.

Or you put a gamepad upside down that's pushing the joystick forward (or weight on the keyboard button). Point being that idle time out won't stop the AFKers who everyone complains about taking up slots, would only kick out those few who get triggered unexpectedly for things like quickly getting up to go to the bathroom.

This little trick has also been figured out by literally dozens of game companies.

I'm sure the folks at SE are clever enough to implement industry standards.

Also, if it takes you 30 minutes to go to the bathroom, perhaps you should stop playing and go see a doctor.

Agreed.

Bottom line is, there shouldn't be 'slots'. Anyone should be able to login at any time and at worst, be faced with a queue to get in. AFK auto-logout is just a band-aid, not a solution to a problem.

AFK logout actually has several other great benefits.

Which is why it's pretty much a industry standard. Even with games that have more-exercised servers like WoW.

Or use an app:) loads of remote desktop apps you can use on a smart phone sure you cant go off and party but you can run round town and chat to your ls.
Best of all if you do crash out you can log back in and as the keyborad is on you at all times you are no longer afk.

3rd party aps (see: bots) are universally against the ToS of any game.

You see this is the crux of the issue.

People can't play because loads of folks are AFK. How dare I propose a fix to allow people who actually want to play to you know. . .do so.

He's talking about an App that lets your remote access your PC, and have your PC running the game. Not bots. Similar to remote play on the Vita/PS3.

I'd rather be part of the problem than not be able to play the game at all.

Why is it that people are not logging out and staying in game AFK in the first place?

No, no, no, you don't get to run away from your claim and then ask me to justify it.

Would booting afk players open up slots? Yes or no. It's relatively easy to answer.

Good god you're dense.

Kicking AFK players out does NOT solve the problem. Once again, kicking AFK players does NOT solve the problem. AFK. NOT THE PROBLEM.

There are several issues here. The root of those issues is not enough server capacity. Not enough space on your servers leads to several other issues. Forgive me for repeating myself, but you seem to be a bit thick to penetrate.

If you increase server capacity, you reduce congestion and possibly eliminate the need to worry about people being AFK. AFK is not the root. Do you get it? Good.

There's a simple answer to the OP's statement.

The Golden Rule of life is dead. R.I.P.

I was raised by parents who believed in that philosophy but even they admit, in their golden years, that it's antiquated and following it basically opens you up for pain and suffering.

The new rule is Look Out for #1

Now this doesn't mean you have to be vindictive or harmful but when all things are equal you're better off taking care fo yourself and your family first because the vast majority of people wll not only do the same but an increasing number will ***** anyone over to benefit themselves.

So as far as staying logged in goes.. more power to you. We didn't create the environment, we're just adapting to it.

As it only runs your desktop the TOS is not broken in anyway as you are running your game on your pc the only thing the app does it act as a long range wireless keyboard with screen.

Now if you got an built in wireless card(dongles wont do it)you can use the wake on lan (included in most if not all bios setting)to turn on your computer with one app then with the remote desktop app log into the game from anywhere not sure how well you could play due to delay from the pc to the phone(got to be at least a tenth of a second more if your not on 4g).

To be honest I dont think there is that many afkers the servers are full you could have 4000 playing and 1000 afk if you still got 5000 odd trying to log on still people are going to be upset thing is no one knows the numbers.
Only thing we know for sure is there is a lot more people playing the game than SE thought was going to its going to get sorted sorted at some point:)

When I can manage to get in game I see, collectively, HUNDREDS of players huddled around sanctuary areas in the same spot for HOURS.

That doesn't include those that take the time to go to inns, etc.

If you don;t think large numbers of people are taking advantage of the NO AFK boot then queue the harp music for a dream sequence.

Simply screaming like a querulous little girl does not make your statement true.

Booting AFK players would have--at the very least--alleviated problems during launch until they could properly gauge server capacity. Right now, in reality, there are very few slots relative to the number of players. Until server capacity is increased, AFK players ARE THE PROBLEM dolt.

If you don't want to admit that, it's cool with me.

Considering how much of a monumental failure this game has been since day one, none of this really shocks me.

What shocks me is this isn't SE's first rodeo and they botched it this badly is very telling of the developmental team.

What in the name of the Twelve am I reading here? FMcN is right, you know. It's simple cause and effect. People are AFKing and staying logged in overnight BECAUSE there's not enough room for everyone, and if you logout, you run the risk of having to wait hours, even days before you can get back in. We've all seen the various login errors by now due to overcrowding. So, it naturally stands to reason that if SE gives a major boost to login capacity, the errors will go away, and the AFK problem will solve itself, because people will no longer fear having to fight for hours to enter the game.

Why fight so vehemently for what is a temporary fix at best, when we can have a permanent and lasting solution implemented instead? Also, even if SE did implement an AFK timer, people would simply turn it off (I haven't ran into a game yet that didn't allow you to turn off auto-boot due to being AFK).

I'm not disagreeing however if this is going to be an ongoing problem for the foreseeable future then something has to be done to address people eating up valuable slots while they are sleeping, at work, w/e.

The fact I've not been able to play this game since Wednesday is testament to how poorly this whole thing was thought through.

The current problem, among a long list of problems, is people sitting AFK disallowing me to play at all.

So yes, boot AFK with a vengeance. It isn't right people aren't even playing but eating up valuable slots disallowing other people to play because they want to AFK.

Quote:

Why not both? Fix the immediate problem now with simple code until you can get the hardware figured out.

Generally software is cheaper than hardware.

Rimesume here's just jealous that those AFKers are playing and he isn't. That's all it boils down to, even basically admitted it in his post, wanting revenge against those players.

But what you fail to account for is those players are afking during off times and playing/active during the peak times that you want on. These are people that log in at 3am when relatively few people are playing, and then play at 5pm when they get out of work. So really the same number of people would still be swamping the game during those peak hours.
