I am not being sarcastic in the title of this post. Even though I've spent more time trying to log on than actually playing this week, I must say that this game is vastly improved. I left 1.0 after 9 months because I couldn't take it anymore. IMHO that game was irreparable. There was barely any content and gameplay was a joke. I had friends that stayed and waited for update after update, but none of their cajoling could get me to return to an experience that left me so scarred. I was scarred because I really wanted the game to be good. Alas, it sucked hard, and after grinding 4 jobs to level 50 I had had enough. When I got the invite to try the beta for 2.0, I was wary to say the least. However when I put in my code and logged on, I remembered what I liked about this game. First of all it's absolutely gorgeous, the graphics are stunning and I've always admired SE's design sense. Secondly, it is so much less of a grind than FFXI, that I feel a lot less stressed out about playing it. And now that there is content (and chocobos and airships lol), the game is a lot more appealing and , dare I say, fun to play. In conclusion, cheers SE for putting out a product that I don't find to be embarrassingly lacking. Now fix the damn server capacity so I can play the damn thing.

They really did do an amazing job in just 16 months -- The world is rich, still beautiful, full of things to do, and lacking all of those XI design concepts they tried to bring over to a new MMO from the EQ days.

Ww you stayed for 9 months? I was out after about 3 months. The only thing I could really do in 1.0 was gather and craft and even that was hell.

I do regret not having the legacy pricing but oh well nothing I can do about that.

I give all mmo betas that I sign up for a chance. Even though I didn't really sign up for xiv beta I still gave it a chance mostly because I didn't have anything else to play atm hahah and i'm glad I did.

...you didn't enjoy waiting 11 minutes for a ship to get there and an 11 minute ride to your destination in XI? =P

I used this as times to eat / stretch / walk out into the light for a few mins(maybe). When i played XI i really played XI. Yeah....

Now that i actually have stuff to do, I'm incredibly glad those days are behind us.

Bio breaks, getting a drink, reading a forum post, the list goes on to why I use the porters 90% of the time.

I was gone from 1.0 after like two weeks. Couldn't handle a three second response to pushing a button.

I paid for Legacy and don't think I logged in once.

I took a week vacation from work for 1.0 release. I made it playing occasionally through that week and into the next. Starting in Grid I made my way through the cut / paste terrain and eventually just gave up. I have nightmares of having to play release of 1.0 again.

They did do an incredible job given the amount of time they had. I cannot imagine how stressful this must have been for them.

But they were rewarded for it come EA/launch day. Though, looking at some of these posts and the official forums, it makes me angry to see people with such entitled attitudes.

Hopefully they continue to do an excellent job and we have another 9~10 years of fun on our hands. :)

Also, I must say: I do miss the boat rides. Just getting on the boat knowing Sea Horror or undead pirates could attack at any time and decimate everyone on board...good times! Suppose it's for the best, though. /cry

That's what I did as well. Slight gamble since 1.0 was so horrible, but I think I made the right call. I've been hooked since the beta. Kinda fun to be this into a game again :)

frankly speaking if i may; this game reminds me alot of FFXI. There are many similarities and many differences. I could go into them but you all who have played both know.

I played FFXI for nigh on 10 years+. Loved every minute. Loved the detail that went into making the game a challenge to to play with any level of skill. You had to understand weaponskill dynamic in order to make a macro that boosted you dmg to the ceiling. Depending on the job whether it be THF or SAM or WAR, every class had a specific fit that made the WS and subsequent SC fail or do excessively high dmg. Not going to get into the pdif details [yall that were parser geeks like me holla, youre out there you know it].

I see a similar trend happening with FFXIV. The differences lie in the fact that we are NOT bound or dependent entirely on party mechanics to get our characters to 50.

And how many here remember when the level cap was initially 50 in ffxi? I can raise my hand at that one. We all know thgat a level cap increase is coming. The only thing i can say is that i hope we arent stuck for hours farming papyrus, who here remembers the hours/days that went into farming that particular rare/ex item. None of the other pieces for me [through two characters] was as difficult a drop to obtain.

Many fond memories of FFXI. I'm hoping that the content for ffxiv will be just as good over just as many years i enjoyed ffxi.

Cheers to all the people in this forum that play this game and FFXI. Hope to make some new friends in the coming years!

I would not mind farming a papyrus. :P Or coffer keys!

Wasn't it a wonderful feeling when you finally got that key to drop and subsequently found your coffer to obtain your piece of AF gear? Perhaps I say this looking through rose-tinted glasses, but the AF quest lines were some of the most fun things I did in XI.

I would like to have that feeling of accomplishment return to 14!

Papyrus ... I'd hoped to have forgotten that particular nightmare, thanks for the refresh!

I'm a bit bummed there is no AF weapon for the jobs, seems incomplete to me.

I completely agree though, the re-design has been fantastic, I'm only sorry I left 1.0 when I did as most of my legacy linkshell have every job capped at 50 now and I'm playing catch-up.

As a ffxi veteran and final fantasy fan boy and someone that played 1.0 for about 4 months. FFXIV ARR Is everything i always wanted an ff mmo to be.

There are some decisions in ffxiv arr that i ask myself "How didnt they thought about this before!!" I always felt the team behind ffxiv 1.0 and some part of ffxi were so closed minded to new ideas and stuck in their old japanese ways. FFXI was an amazing beautiful game but i always felt it was made for people that enjoyed pain and suffering hahaha. FFXI was not so much a hard game but more so a painful game. And ffxiv 1.0 felt like that painful game all over again

ARR feels fresh and mature. I love it!

Only because I could fish on the boat. And occasionally pirates would attack. That's it.

Exactly, there is no AF weapon in the job quest sequence. Relic weapons are available on another Quest sequence that can only be opened after finishing the main story line.

I may be wrong, but were there AF weapons in FFXI? I don't remember ever doing a quest to get my blue mage AF weapon, but maybe that was because I was too busy trying to hunt monsters and learn spells to notice if there ever was one, and by then I was high enough level that it wouldn't have mattered.

The weapon was the first AF item you get in FFXI at level 40, of course being a WAR I promptly filed it as it was useless.
#22 Sep 04 2013 at 9:22 AM Rating: Good
The only useful "AF Weapon" out of all the ones for all jobs in XI was Scholar's, because theirs was actually the spell Klimaform.

Everyone else promptly filed it away or stored it, too.

I did enjoy the AF quests and the thrill of getting and equiping each piece. For BLM and RDM, my two 75 jobs in early FFXI (preCoP) I did the quests on level, so every 2 levels 50-60. Farming the keys weren't bad, because I had some friends and we did them together. What I don't miss: Places like Garlaige with its frickin banishing gate, Eldieme Necropolis with its stupid doors, or Castle Os top floor and sight based detection mobs. It was annoying to have to bother others to help you for 1-3 hours and/or have to log out behind gates for days to get your coffer. Another needless and overly difficult time sink that required suffering. I guess it did teach me about aggro, because let me tell you, I was a pro after spending so much time in areas with mobs that, if they saw you, you had no chance. I was also happy because of the jobs I had chosen because sometimes an Elemental Seal Sleepga or Manafont Escape was perfect for GTFO after you got it. I couldn't imagine being a 52 WAR (insert helpless DD job here) trying to get your AF.

Because they were trying to reinvent the wheel and completely distance them selves from FFXI

Other than changing the previously outstanding theme for Ul'dah with a cheesy somewhat irritating theme, I was totally blown away by everything else.
