Are PS3 players playing on the ps3 by choice?Follow

#27 Sep 05 2013 at 11:37 AM Rating: Default
The reason why I play my PS3.

1. My PC sucks.
2. 70 inch HDMI Flatscreen TV.
3. I get to sit on my couch and not in an office chair.
4. No need for silly computer set ups and all that jibber jabber.
5. Using a controller is more convenient to me than it is for a PC. Plus I don't feel like having to go out and buy a controller for my PC when one comes free with the PS3
6. PS4 2013. Yes please.
7. I can use my PC to look up stuff while I play XIV on the flat screen!

Smiley: lol

Plus I don't get those insane errors like those PC guys get. Error 90k? Never had it. Error 2002? Nope. Error 1017. Nope. Just Chuck Testa here on Final Fantasy XIV.

I got a sweet *** rig off some kid from Craigslist for only $600 and I got a free 20" HD monitor with it. Talk about a deal. But im not going to go in to specs but the game runs @60fps on max even during fates and that my choice. I've read before I got the PC that PS3 graphics are dull and frame rates are horrible. I got this PC by choice.

With the pc version you can change the interface for controller settings and the hot bar changes to controller interface. Excuse to play this on a Ps3 for use of controller is lame lol

until proof is given on 60fps your nothing but a bold face bull *******.

I'm curious if the majority of ps3 players are playing because they prefer that to a pc, even though a pc is a viable alternative to them? Or are they playing on a ps3 because they don't have a pc that is capable of running the game? I personally don't see the appeal of playing on ps3, however I don't know if there's something I"m missing something that would grant a greater appeal of ps3 instead of pc, since pc hardware capable of playing the game at a decent resolution can roughly be found for the price of a ps3.

Also, is htere any way to play my regular pc game on ps3 without buying the game on on ps3?

I run Linux on my workstation and don't feel like investing at least $600 - $800 into a PC that would run games better than my PS3 already does, plus PS3s run $200 nowadays anyway. Plus there's the hassle factor - stuff on the PS3 just works without issue far more often than on PC because it's a very uniform environment to develop for. Windows Vista is different from 7 which is different from 8, plus people do all sorts of mods to the software stacks on their PCs that make supporting it a much bigger deal. Then you end up with driver issues, and issues where something you've done to your system *wasn't* accounted for by the game devs and things don't work or don't work right. With the PS3, every PS3 has the same software, the same versions of that software, etc, and it's easy to account for that as a game developer.

These are server-generated errors, and I've gotten them on my PS3. The platform you play on has no impact whatsoever on whether you'll receive these errors or not. The time(s) and day(s) you login do.

Strange, I'm using windows 8 x64 and since day one of installing I've never had a crash, bsod, etc. And I do some pretty funky stuff with it.

Lucky! Almost all of mine have been issues with memory management. I have 16 GB of RAM and sometimes Win8 just chokes on it. It's a known issue when you're at the limit of what your motherboard can handle.

Moot point for me, my new i7 and its new motherboard are on their way and should be here Saturday. New mobo can handle 32 GB of RAM so the problems will hopefully go away.

Or do like me!

I have my pc connected to my 55 inch hdtv. Lowered the resolution so i can see things good like on a ps3. And i feel i'm playing on a ps4 and even better at max settings.

And im sitting on my couch playing with my ps3 controller!

I should post pictures lol.

I was forced to get the PS3 version because the PC version is sold out in all stores. The experience is not so bad, but the scaled down resolution, combine with the fact that I play on a monitor, makes my character a bit blurry, and some other rendering issues with the world. I'm hooked on my catlady though, and I'm not sure account transfers are possible, especially ones linked to a PSN account. So yeah, I guess you can say PS3 is my mainstay unless otherwise. The 40 bucks were worth it.

Another person who agrees me that optimization rocks.

I ran into the same situation. I was unable to find a PC version anywhere so I bought it for the PS3 to hold me over. I was then able to download and use the PC client after linking the PS3 codes to my SE account. Now I did buy the FFXIV 1.0 Collectors Edition when it was originally released but have since lost the package and codes. Before I bought the PS3 version I was unable to redeem my 2.0 client download from SE but perhaps I was doing it wrong.

Interesting, it worked the other way around for me, playing last week my PS3 version got 1017 nearly all of the time, and in the rare situation in which I actually did make it online, I always got disconnected with error 90000 within 15 minutes, and was plagued with ridiculous lag, wherein actions would be delayed for upwards of half-a-minute, if there were more than 2-3 models on screen at the same time.

Eventualy it got to the point where I just switched to using PC because my PS3 version was unplayable. My PC can run the game, but nowhere near optimally, although, it did stay online and error-free for three straight days.

I prefer to play on the PS3, and now that the errors are getting resolved, I plan to use than more often. It simply runs a little better for me, until I build a new PC. (or get te PS4 version...)

I love playing on my 55in TV I'm the comfort of my game chair. Everyone has their preferences. I played 1.0 on my PC (which just so happens fried) and I could not get comfortable playing on my desk. I've been a console gamer all my life. Its just comfortable playing on my TV.

I'll enjoy the nice graphics when it arrives on ps4

I actually prefer to play on PS3... my fiance and I have two of them in our living room and we can sit on the couch next to eachother and play together on our TV's while still being able to hold a conversation.

I feel like a gaming PC would be too restrictive in terms of interaction with my fiance, and I don't like laptops for gaming, so a console is really what I prefer.

Now, will I be upgrading to a PS4 next year.... YES!

My living room tv is only 47" and over 10' away, and my couch is not comfortable. I do have a controller on my computer and 3 28" monitors surrounding me and sit in a lazyboy.

I guess if my living room was more appropriate I'd be more inclined to use the ps3, but it's not very game friendly.

I would loooooove to play on my PS3. But we are not big TV watchers, so we have but one HDTV. And God forbid I make my kid miss her cartoons, or the wife miss her soaps. I got a recliner, and a wireless keyboard, mouse and controller with a decent size monitor.

If you are able to put your FFXIV PS3 disc into a new PS4 and play, I can see why a lot of people got it for PS3. I expect the PS4 will be near parity to a medium/high range gaming PC with this game (though I expect that on max settings the PC will have the ability to run better if you have a really high end rig)

I do recall for games such as Defiance (another mmo, well shooter mmo, that's cross platforms) that the console players had muddier textures and performance issues where a PC player wouldn't.

I get the allure of sitting on the couch and playing on a huge TV, despite you cant just hook your pc up to the tv and get a wireless controller and do the same.

PC will always have the advantage unless consoles get plug n play GPU and CPU that are compatible with parts sold on newegg. Really that's the huge advantage PC has...oh the PS4 is close to my performance? Well Ill just order a $400 latest generation graphics card and slap it in and bam, better than the console that wont upgrade ever in its entire life span.

Also, for me, game library is a huge advantage. I never have to rebuy my game library because I want better graphics from a new system.

But yeah, if you can play this disk on your ps4 when it comes out and you are getting the PS4, ive come to the realization that the differences between the ps4 and most peoples pc systems will be nominal at best. Now...if they could just get steam on a console with the ability to buy and play anything from there and I would argue that a console (at what $350-$450) would be well worth it vs a PC.. until that happens even if consoles can split atoms and blow away PC graphics...ill have my massive steam library and never have to worry about compatibility on new systems.

It was either play on PS3 or mess around with getting it to work on WINE since I refuse to install windows on any of my machines. And since it was available to just download and install for PS3 I felt that was easier.

Plus, you can plug a mouse and keyboard into the PS3, so I don't see what the big deal is.

heres the "big deal"

I personally dont give a crap but clearly some people do

This is not accurate. I'd guess to get such a crappy result for PS3 they had to use the RCA cables hooked up to a coax converter and then film that on an old TV with an antique camera. Seriously, it's not that bad. It's not as good as on PC, of course, but that video is NOT an accurate representation of what the game actually looks like on PS3.

^THIS

I use HDMI cables and 52" LCD TV's... trust me the graphics are not as bad as in that video. They are fantastic looking on my TV. The only problem I have is with server lag and mobs not popping on my screen in FATE's until they are already almost dead, but that's not strictly a PS3 issue as far as I know.

It was cheaper for me to buy a used PS3 than a PC that would run the game. All in all I spent less than $250 including a logitech ps2 keyboard/controller and ps2->ps3 controller converter.

I am a PC 'power user', am a career Graphic artist and IT coordinator, and spent the last oh, I don't know, 17 years of my life or so playing games in front of my computer screen and have loved it. I played FFXI for many years on PC and couldn't imagine playing it on console (especially considering how much windower and spellcast assist in gameplay, and the fact that I've been on VOIP software with the same friends since my days of Tribes 2).

That being said... I played FFXIV on ps3 in beta and it was EXTREMELY REFRESHING. There is something about how FFXIV plays on console that is hard to beat. If there is one thing FFXIV does better than any other MMO I've played over the years, it's "feel" like a console game. I had leveled a character from 1-20 a couple times already, so I knew what to expect when I sat down on PS3, but it felt far less "annoying" to repeatedly kill the same enemies and re-do the same fetch-quests in the living room on a big screen TV while talking with my wife than it did either of the previous times on PC.

Personally, I couldn't give a strong enough recommendation for playing on console, it just felt "right", and it's hard for me to even comprehend how they managed to get a WoW-Quality / WoW-Style game into a console and have it feel natural. I honestly never thought I'd see the day a company succeeded in doing that.

That being said, I'm not 'delving in' to FFXIV at the moment because I'm too cheap for the current monthly cost. No matter how 'well executed' a wow-style game it is, at the end of the day, it's a wow-style game that I feel like I've already played. Cost is a HUGE deciding factor for me in games like this now as there are many good free alternatives today, and if I'm going to pay I'd rather spend that money to directly buy an item I just don't have the free-time to earn, but would be worthwhile to have in game, so I can focus on things outside of the game without feeling like I'm "missing out".

edit: changed # of years... sometimes I forget how old I am now ;(

I have a copy of PC and PS3 both linked to my account and I can tell you a majority of it I've played on PS3. Yes it doesn't look as good as PC but it's a lot more stable on PS3 than PC. Specially these past 2ish weeks now where with PC client crashing due to runtime errors and not being able to log in. Vs PS3 version where I've had 0 issues or errors that weren't server related. Dunno about you but I'll take slightly watered down graphics for the ability to have a solid play experience. Only complaint is while I don't mind and like playing with a controller I wish it had the option to play on keyboard/mouse as well without having to do a lotta work arounds for it to function "halfway" decently. If I could do that I'd play PS3 almost exclusively.

Playing on a 50" flat screen, from a recliner couch, with a controller option (that I don't use) on PC.

Not sure why people keep stating that PS3 = TV and couch. Both TV's and PC video cards have been HDMI capable for many years.

My PS3 trial ended with woefully sub-par targeting frustration. Bleh. I even bought a second wireless keyboard and mouse for my PS3 so I could compare apples to apples. It's the User Interface restrictions that sink the ship. The cross-bar is in no way equal to keyboard hotkeys. Some people don't care about graphics, but I'll admit that I do.

Anyway, anyone that has not hooked their PC up to their flat screen, give it a shot. After you have 50" of HD Google from your couch you will never go back.

Ill tell you one thing. A lot of those crashes, disconnections and errors you pc players are getting? I've seen zero of that on the ps3 version.

No issues here on PC. Not a single crash, disconnect, or error and that's with not logging out for days at a time. Max settings, constant 100FPS. No hiccups.

I've basically given up on consoles until the next gen releases. I haven't fired any of mine up for almost a year.

It's all about comfort for me. I like playing in my comfy chair in my living room or in my comfy bed.

I've seen the game on the PC and it is sick, but not worth giving up those comforts. Can't wait for the PS4.

Peace.

I started on pc during beta, then tried PS3 once I had a chance, at first i found it a little different, and wasn't convinced. But then after a bit, i found it really easy to just pick up and play on the PS3, when i was just running quests and gathering and such, even doing the beginner dungeons and guildhests. As mentioned targeting can be a little challenge at time (haven't fiddle with my settings yet, so that more my issue than the games), but for the most part its a non issue. I personally plan on playing on both, but for right now, I'm liking the pick up (the controller) and play aspect of the PS3.
