What am I doing wrong?Follow

So after the lengthy download and patch I was able to play FFXIV on my PS3 for a good while. I didn't really have much fun, though. Is it something I'm doing wrong? It seems like a good deal of the quests are menial tasks (press X while near something sparkly, kill 3 rats, etc.), but there are huge difficulty spikes out of nowhere. I go from having total control to feeling lost because no one, not even the game, can tell me how to get to Western La Noscea. I find myself constantly looking things up online, and even then the databases aren't really that clear.

Combat is pretty fun. Carbuncle is as cute as it is useful. FATEs are pretty neat but don't seem to ever occur often enough. But it doesn't seem like I'm actually playing the game. Wasn't FFXIV supposed to be the story-driven MMO? Aside from the introductory cutscenes, it just seems like a poorly executed and confused WoW clone with a kawaii veneer. It sounds great on paper (or videos, ZAM forums, etc.) but suffers from being incredibly disjointed.

Not to complain or anything. I REALLY wanted to enjoy this game, even having gone as far as to buy a PS3 for it.

So am I doing something wrong? Am I just experiencing the learning curve? Or is this game just not for me? I got ARC to level 13 and pretty much ran out of quests, figured it was a good time to assess the game.

Real mature. I expected more from this community, guess that was a miscalculation. Or is your reading comprehension not advanced enough to realize I'm not trying to **** on your precious game? I bought a system to play it and am asking what I can do differently to enjoy it, thats all.

Seems like you haven't done your story quests and lvl 13 is nothing . Once you get 30+ the game gets going. The story is good the high end dungeons are fun . And fates are all over the place once you hit 20.

Also are you keeping up with Ur hunt log and class quests?

EDIT: Misunderstanding on my part.

EDIT2: Progression in low levels are usually a mix of discouragement and confusion. Once you get past all of that the game will pick up.

Certainly seemed to me you were bashing the game in your original post, particularly towards the end.

There is plenty of story - more than I like personally. Keep with the main storyline quests, which are indicated by flames sort of around the quest marker. You can't just spam the storyline, though. You have to be a certain level to progress at times, which is perfectly sensible since it is pointless to take a level 10 character into a dungeon where all the mobs are level 15+ and there is a time limit.

As for the non-storyline quests, they too serve a purpose to help you learn your way around - including finding Western La Noscea. The experience, gil, and item rewards are also helpful. Doesn't hurt to spend time just exploring as well since you also get experience when you enter new areas for the first time. Not sure exactly what you are expecting from quests, but I don't really think it's reasonable to expect some super-mega boss fight every other quest.

The storyline is wonderful, and worth appreciating. But if all you want is a good story, maybe you should just go read a book.

I will say that the in-game hints for where to go aren't really that in-depth, but you can follow how to get some place by checking zone connections - clicking/selecting that zone connection and then backtracking to either the zone you're in or one you're familiar with. Also, the game hasn't been out that long and revamped so not all the tools are completely fleshed out with all the information you may need although I have seemingly been able to find what I've been looking for, but there have been quite in-depth searches at times.

The FATEs definitely are lacking in early levels, but not completely and some zones better than others. The frequency and quantity definitely increase with level, and again some zones are better than others. Also, are you sure you're doing the Main Story quests? Most are gated by level requirements and the story definitely picks up nicely. The other side missions may not have too much story involved, but I'm sure some hubs have an ongoing theme. Also, as mentioned your Hunting Log and Class quests are definitely important and most of the class quests I've done so far have had a nice mini story with them.

I would definitely say it's a learning curve issue. When I first started I was totally in the same boat and have recently rerolled to be with friends and realized how much more efficiently and smoothly I've been completing tasks and enjoying the game all over again after having a fairly sound grasp on the mechanics. It's also plausible you just don't enjoy the game, and not all games are for everyone, I would say definitely stick it out a bit longer and see if it takes hold. If not maybe it would be best to move on, but I have confidence in the games ability to win you over Smiley: smile

There is no way you would run out of quests. There are so many that you just can't.

Story line quests are pretty nice and the quests for your class have a nice story at them. FATEs are occurring more than enough to be honest. That's why there are FATE parties for them cause they give a lot of xp.

Lvl 13 you barely did anything really. At lvl 15 and later you actually start doing something. So I suggest you go back there and search for the quests you obviously missed (no way you run out) and come back to us when you are 15 or 20 and tell us again how you feel about it.

I am lvl 24 currently and always have something to do. Whether its main story, dungeons, fates, leves, class quest, etc. My suggestion to you is follow the main story as you progress and do your class quests as well. The main story will start introducing you to a number of things.

Lvl 13 is way to low to determine if the games for you or not.

Good luck

To be fair, I had a ***** of a time finding the zone for Western La Noscea as well. The map around LL is.... confusing. I remember it being even more confusion in 1.0 when it was all the same map, though. It's just a fricking huge area.

The game has LOTS of menial task quests. Tons.

After level 15 I think or 20 the game opens up more. You still want to pay attention to your main storyline quests, which will offer menial tasks (no one trusts you in this game and the only way to gain trust is to do menial tasks lol)

You could, if you wanted, start doing Fates and dungeons to progress and forget about the quests and storyline. I wouldn't recommend doing this earlier than 20ish after you get your GC.

Really when you think about it, its only one trip to endgame with these quests. After that you can fate farm your other classes ect its actually quicker this way.

I wouldn't advise people who loathe mmorpg quests to pick this game up however.

Oh and reading the quest text does make them more enjoyable if you are into that kind of thing.

People laughed at me three weeks ago when I asked how do you sprint. Dont bother with them, they are trolls, you learn to ignore them around here. You need to first do the quests in the adventurer's guild. Do the quests with the gold fire coming of the quest arrows on top of the quest giver's heads. Those are story quests. Western La Noscea is a region nearby your home city. You can get there by going out one of the exits in the city. The easy way is to use the map provided in the menu. Walk around for a little bit liek you would in a new city. You will eventually rememeber places by their appearance. It took me a while to figure out as well, but pretty soon on you get teleport that will allow you to automatically go back to any of the light blue big crystals you have been attuned to. Eventually when you accept a quest you will be able to go to journal, click on the quest, it brings you to your map to give you a general idea, and if then clicking on the exclamation point of the quest marker does not zoom the map, you can alwasy find out what region it is in and manually search the map for the location (and what leads to and from that spot) This will involve many hours of mapping the regions, but in the end it is well worth it.

LL is one of the most confusing areas imo. Upper and lower and the circles can get a little wierd. Also the Alchemy Guild in Ul'Dah is a pain to find. It is stuck in the royal court area.

Thanks for the honest advice. I'm sorry if my OP seemed a bit harsh, I guess I expected too much of the game before it even got in to full swing. I'm going to look for more quests (they're there, somewhere X_X!) and do my best to make it work :).

I'm on Famfrit if anyone wants to level an alt with me or something!
