Just look around Mor Dhona, there's a lot of them. Even on the new fresh servers. It's really not even close to the achievement they were on XI, where you basicly had to spend a 1 to 1,5 year of your life constantly grinding with 18 people in an alliance at level 75 for them. Sure, they were easier to obtain with the dynamis changes as well as level 99 since even i eventually got one, but still.

XI: Massive achievement, Kudos to you.
XIV: You got a +1 relic in the first week...? Yeah... go join the other 100 guys with them in the corner over there.

Honestly I'm ok with the fact that we don't need to grind for 18 months w/ 18 people 4 times a week, 4 hours a day to achieve gear. I work 50+ hrs a week, have 2 kids, and have a lovely wife...
Don't get me wrong, but I think 2004 is over and MMO's have evolved from grinds since then and are meant to be fun to play, not a 2nd job. **cough cough FFXI**

What about the people who DO want to have some incredibly difficult challenge to obtain?

I'm a bit tired of the XIV crowed saying "this isn't 200X blah blah blah." The world doesn't revolve around any one of us, there should be a little something for ALL of us... the hardcore players included (which I am not one of.)

I see the words "incredibly difficult" yet they translate in my head to "long and tedious grind with shiny at the end"

There is a huge difference between tedious and difficult. Getting a legendary in GW2 was long and tedious but it wasn't difficult (nor was it very rewarding). Unlocking the Kid in Super Meat Boy only takes a few hours but it is incredibly difficult (and very rewarding)

Heh the ironic part of this is XIV is more of a grind than XI. XI only seemed like it because of the lockout timers. Quest Grind MMOs are almost always more grindy, even the main story was a pure fetch quest grind.

They simply mistagged them, they shouldn't be called "Relics" after the precedence of XI and XIV 1.0, they should be more appropriately named Artifact Weapons. 2004 is over, you know what else came out in 2004? WoW, you know what almost every MMO since then has copied to this date? WoW. You know which system has been popular since then? Quest Progression.

Know what XIV uses? Yeah. Don't get me wrong. time moves on etc etc, but you can't say "MMOs have evolved" when every single one to this date has been using system standardized in 2004-2006.

I'm still waiting to see a screeny of 100 people with their Relic +1 weapons

The achievement system will go much much farther in splitting the casual from the hardcore in XIV. Look through the achievements. Things like Dungeon Master (1000 raids), Let the Bodies Hit the Floor (100,000 enemies), getting the luminary tools for DoH and DoL, getting all classes to 50...there's hundreds of achievements. Most are grindy with very little actually gameplay challenge but some give titles or items that can you equip for e-peen+1 if thats your thing.

Legendary weapons in WoW took quite a while to obtain. Shadowmourne and Teracgosa's Rest took months to obtain when they were current. Same with the Legendary Rogue daggers. Not as bad as Relics in FFXI, but longer than ARR. I think it could be a good middle ground timeline for future "relic" weapons in ARR. Still next to impossible to obtain for someone who doesn't play much and a decent enough challenge those who play a lot.

Why not? Mind you, difficulty tends to be relative, both on a personal level and your chosen class for the encounter, but I'm in general agreement with KG that when the squeaky hardcore player wheel makes itself known, it usually means grind, grind, grind, grind, and grind some more. Add some RNG and lockouts for added frustration. Perhaps people who hope for the Dark Souls MMO equivalent will be left forever wanting, as such is indeed a niche preference. Doubly so with a monthly fee involved.

Though, I feel some of this problem stems from nomenclature. When people sling terms like Epic or Legendary around, they're obviously hoping for the context of supreme or ultimate. Given the nature of MMOs to evolve, with this cap increases and new gear to follow, it's perhaps better for devs to avoid this kind of distinction. Otherwise, you get situations like in XI where people are pissed about their RMEs being weaker than Delve weapons now. As well, I've seen the WoW crowd ***** about their gear getting replaced by quest greens when that time rolls around. It simply is a case of never being able to please everyone.

Either way, I'm of the mind XIV is the hardest MMO I've really played compared to Rift, Aion, Tera, GW2, or even XI. Some of this is due to everything still being new for everyone. Sometimes it's just being paired with bad players in dungeons. Hardcores may laugh at that sentiment or gloat (and lie) about their own experiences, but regardless of which side you're on, there are learning curves.

Let them continue to play FFXI, very simple.

Which makes me think that +1 relic is just the tip of the iceberg. And btw, how on earth are they getting this when there is a 300 tomestone per week cap?

Well, I can go into any clothing store and by last season's fashion for $4, when the year it came out I would have to buy it for $100.
