Will the game last 12 months?Follow

#1 Sep 12 2013 at 4:19 PM Rating: Default
I only ask this question as the game is not even a month old and many people have completed the main storyline. Some have multiple lvl 50 jobs. So in this case it seems it would rely on how fast SE can release new content to do every month, but not necessary new storyline. And yes, I know the game itself will last for many years, but I wonder if an active player base will.

One big thing that brings a community together is people and friends but that also seems to be the weakest point on FFXIV MMO atm. Most things are solo or with random people you may never see again or on other servers. But I am hopeful people will be playing this actively a year from now.

I do enjoy the game as of now, but am thinking long term.

The game launched with people that had multiple level 50 jobs.

Yes, the game will do just fine. Will it have tens of millions of players and become the next form of reality tv? No, that was never a possibility.

The game will last 12 months, will it last 12 months for all players? No not at all we are already seeing the signs of people who simply blitz content for the sake of bragging rights and epeen attitude. For these people they are crying the loudest and hardest and will be bored and move on.

To those people I'll be happy to see leave. I consider them nothing more than cancer in games as they typically bring poor attitudes and over zealous elitism attitudes.
I hope SE takes their time and releases QUALITY content over Quantity of content.

To me I've always enjoyed more of the social aspect and the story aspect from FFXI, it was about playing the story with friends. It was a lot more enjoyable that way and what kept me playing FFXI as long as I did.

Like I said, its the free trail, is why things are so packed. We shall see how things are when the trial is over. Then we can worry about longevity.

Personally, I think this game will last many years.

How is it a free trial if people paid for the box?

Considering I will still be playing this 10 years from now. Yes, yes it will.

It will last but I don't think the hype will stay around for long. I'm honestly already bored with it, besides running around checking out the amazing environments, and fate grinding. it's kind of empty, it seems to be trying to capture the COD crowd as part of its player base. quick to jump in and learn, fast progression for the ADD players to keep them from getting bored. I played XI for many years and that game had something ffxi I don't think will ever capture. I really can't see playing this game past the free trial

Run back to the XI board and dance with preludes, kim. I'm sure you two will get along just swimmingly with the implications this game's already dead.

The people who blitzed through **** only have themselves to blame. I'm quite comfortable in saying I've played a hell of a lot since launch. In two weeks, my BLM is 49, I've got the other jobs 15+, and I've done some tinkering in crafting. Most efficient use of time? No. Was I trying? No. I also realize that what I've done will take most other people 3x as long, if not more, to accomplish. The game won't miss some burnt out hardcores. I'd actually be more worried about the game scaring off the casuals with how difficult some of the dungeon encounters can seem to the unprepared. But hopefully Yoshi's taking notes on what is and isn't working right now, as adjustments are always a patch away.

Strange, I log in and my biggest problem is deciding what to do. Boredom hasn't been an issue... I have THM/CNJ/PUG to 50, CRP/WVR/ALC to 50, BOT/MIN to 50, but I still have Fishing, Goldsmithing, Armorer, Blacksmith, Culinarian, Leatherworking, Gladiator, Lancer, Marauder, Arcanist, Archer, AF for all that, Relic for all that, etc... My head is spinning from everything I could be doing whenever I am online.

I haven't finished the main storyline yet. I don't have a single job at lvl 50, let alone multiple ones. I don't even have a job yet, as my highest level is 23. And my core group of friends are on a similar pace. So for me, I think this game will definitely last 12 months

The game already last longer than 12 months (1.0).

Perhaps you meant to ask: will the game last another 12 months?

Ouch, sucks for you. I'm finding plenty to do every time I log in. I don't have a single class at 50 yet because I've been leveling a little bit of everything. Heck, I haven't even fought Titan yet in the main storyline because I got the crafting bug and have been cranking out the HQ gear (and making a killing at it). I'm loving pretty much everything about the game so far and can't imagine getting bored with it for a very long time. Sounds more like you are just a part of the "CoD crowd" you claim the game is for... nothing wrong with that I guess.

well I'm only 29 pug but I've done pretty much the whole story line. here's my main issue really, this game doesn't need to be online. the reason I enjoyed XI so much was because the he had an actual community. you literally had to rely on others to progress, it might have been a pain in the *** but it was fun. hitting a new lvl or getting a mission done actually gave a sense of accomplishment, and finally hitting 75 was pure gold! this game doesn't have any of that, it's just king of like alright what next. that's not what I expect from an MMO game.

You're expecting a nostalgic feeling seen through rose-tinted glasses. No game will ever give that to you until years after you play it.

Just play the game (or not). Stop trying to recapture the feelings of your misspent youth. XIV is not a red convertible.

Of course the game will last a year. There's simply no question. It's how it will look in a year we should be concerned about.

Between the solipsistic nature of the Duty Finder and the ease of leveling, it's hard to say how much meaningful interaction you'll have with others, and unclear what place crafters and gatherers will occupy in the long term.

Right now FFXIV is not a community of people who like to play together, but a pool of people who play as if alone, with random match-ups from other worlds, rarely speaking a word, who return to their home servers and chat in company groups. However, even back on one's home server, the primary means of advancement comes from similarly silent runs from minimap icon to minimap icon, tossing out spells and skills as fast as possible for the greatest possible rewards. The game itself feels divided, with systems so strongly encouraging solo play that it's easy to forget the game is an MMO; most everyone you meet may as well be another NPC, hitting whatever monsters spawn in a FATE. Sometimes players do team up with one or two other company members, but progress by these means seems to be outside the norm. In games like WoW and FFXI, many people keep playing simply due to their Guilds and Linkshells -- in FFXIV I'm not sure how many players will be convinced to remain in a world in which friendship and bonds with others is so unnecessary.

There are other problems facing crafters and gatherers. Aside from the extreme ease of leveling these classes, which thereby inundates markets with an overabundance of both gear and players with the ability to make said gear, NPCs sell nearly everything a player needs to reach upper levels for reasonable prices. At the current rate it's hard to say what place these classes will have a year from now. Most likely, they will be used to craft an endgame weapon or two, and otherwise very rarely see use. With most everyone able to cap these classes easily, as well, it is likely that even these more elite services will be in low demand.

The stability of the game itself is assured. The stability of everything else is tenuous.

exactly, the games been out two weeks if that and you see all the people talking **** spouting out all the stuff they've done. ITS EASY! that's why you've done it all, doesn't that make sense any of you? easy accomplishments that can be done mostly solo, doses not make for a long lasting quality MMO! I hate to say it because I had high hope for this game.

The game has lasted through 1.0 which as SE even admits, was not up to par. 2.0 is 100% better so why would you think it would fail?

The game is a good foundation. Im sure there is, and I hope there is, and expansion and level cap raise down the road soon.

I really think they would have been better off making the trip to endgame a total grind. The people that quit over long progression are the same people that race to endgame then quit because they cant find any content because they skipped it all grinding fates.

Endgame is not going to be short. They cap weekly tombs and I recall someone saying it will take 24 months just to get the full philosopher set (not sure on that was a chat comment)

Not in this market. They couldn't sell 2002's FFXI today.

Look, I appreciate that there are people who really enjoyed the prospect of FFXI leveling to cap taking years. It took me about two years to get my first job to 75. But please understand that in order for a game to sell well enough to justify supporting it, it has to be appealing to more than a handful of people. FFXI doesn't have to care now (although the level grind has been drastically reduced even there) because it's made all the money it needs to make. It's all just gravy for them now.

If you'd like a game that punishes you for playing it though, try Wizardry Online. That game is built around that very premise.

The duty finder is a design choice. They looked at what would draw in the largest amount of players versus relegating themselves to a small player base right out of the gate. It is however an option to use duty finder, If XI had a cross server during it's prime, the same result would probably happen. A small following would cling onto the "tight knit community", and usually be waiting around for others to be online at the same time and actually do content in a timely manner.

Systems encouraging solo play? What systems? You must mean FATES only, because the solo story missions are personal genkai missions just as XI had. I've only done two grand company leves and those were solo, but are most of them solo affairs?

Yoshi himself went on record in an interview and said the journey from 1-50 at release will be easy, it will seem more like a normal final fantasy, the real game doesn't begin until level 50, the seemingly forced mmorpg part. Leveling as a journey is not the focus of this game and it never has been since Yoshi took the reigns. When the subsequent patches and expansions come out, and the game doesn't personify the truth of an mmorpg, then and only then can any predictions or worries about the future be certified. Rest assured there will be alterations and adjustments to existing content if enough complaints are made. Yoshi will listen the masses but not the worries of a LOUD few.

There are many future contents in the works that consist of multiplayer and some solo-low man content as well. If we see this game through the lens of XI, then nothing this game ever does will satiate our hunger. It sets out to be a game from the Final Fantasy universe, not from the Xi universe solely. I don't think everything Yoshi does is perfect, I don't like some of the design choices. But this is his game and we have only seen the prelude to this saga. Will it be a dungeon treadmill or will it offer variety to endgame, things like airship battles, magitek battles, world PvP, etc, etc.

You know, I played the bejesus out of the wizardry games on SNES and PS1, so I DLed online hoping for a good ftp to tide me over. First few levels were great, but man I must have died 80 times in a single session once I started getting out into the world.

I asked myself later that morning whether it would be more fun to continue trying, or hit myself in the arm with a hammer. Still have the marks to remind me not to hit myself like that again...
