I'll say this about the game, i love it and play it everyday but when i look back i found that i have really just been playing this game alone. you quest alone, do missions alone, level alone. and when it does come to doing any group content it is with strangers so they might as well be random npc. and before people start saying well wait till end game raids and dungeons then you will have lots of group stuff...that is to me a crap game design. you should be making friends and interacting with people all the way to endgame so you have some sort of community and more of a attachment to the game then just log on do df and fate then log off.

so to the op will this game be around for 12 months and more the answer to that is yes, there will always be a fateful base of players to any MMO that will always love it play it no matter what so that will be enough to keep it around.

on a personal note will i be around for 12 months and more that i dont know. i want to get to endgame try dungeons and hard mode primals. but im not a fan of just playing an online game 80 to 90% solo

what i would like to see

trigger pop bosses that can be farmed and done with people on your own server or FC
story quest or long side quest that encourage duo or small groups to band together to complete them.
salvage style instances (mean that you need a trigger to enter them and have multiple paths and objective so its not always a start to finish run that is the same over and over)
and small group orientated leveling on your own server that is a viable alternative to fate grinding

The Last Remnant does that too, though it's not an MMO. Grinding makes the game harder, not easier.

Well technically, it's already lasted 36 months. If the question is "Will it last another 12 months" then the answer is, yes. If there was nothing else I've learned posting here, it's that you should never underestimate the loyalty of a Final Fantasy fan.

First off, the game isn't that bad. It's not amazing, but it has a load more promise than it had 3 years ago and it's already come this far. No doubt it lasts another 12 months. That said, it really does need a lot of adjustments. It seems like Yoshi and co jammed a lot of ideas that were popular in other games, but overlooked the elements and mechanics of said games that allowed them to work well.

The only real question in my mind is "Will they be able to make the necessary adjustments in a timely manner and without jilting their current playerbase". The answer to that is, only time will tell.

So glad I didn't rush to 50. Compared to other mmos, this one is in good shape so far, by the time I'm bored with current content there will be housing, pvp and hopefully more endgame. I've been levelling alt classes, helping my brother and Ls buddies, shooting the **** with randoms during fate grinds, fishing and having a blast. I agree racing to 50 can be boring and lonely. It can be social if you want to take the time to make it that way. I don't agree that forced grouping is the answer to your woes though.

FFXIV will last as long as the players support it. I don't see why people are making these doom and gloom predictions in the first 30 day window. There are players who level faster than others, that doesn't mean the game is doomed. I knew players that leveled BLU in one day back when leveling in FFXI actually was a chore to do. Those same players had almost none of the learned spells and has terrible gear. My point is that the people in a rush won't stick around so don't worry about what they do. The majority of non legacy players are just reaching their 30-40's right now.

I have 7/9 classes at 50, completed the story, on Titan now, decked out like a Christmas tree. I'll be here for a long time. If they ACTUALLY live up to the level of content additions they SAY they will, there will be too much content. It remains to be seen.

How is it a free trial if people paid for the box?

That's a loaded question.

SE is gonna get their money one way or another. FFXI had a 14-day free trail(don't know if its been changed since then), but we all had to buy the game first.

His point, and I agree with it, is that if the time cost money then it is not a free anything.

A free trial is something you get to do before putting any money down. What we're doing now is game time included in the purchase price of the game (or free time given to 1.0 players.. or is that done by now? I'm not sure about that one).

The same way people get free pre-order bonus on any games nowadays. Hey, here's a free day 1 DLC we are giving you because you give up money 10 months before the game is released, which will become free one year later when the GOTY edition coming out. How do you like that, FREE?

If SE sold FFXI or FFXIV(or Blizzard sold WoW) without a 30 day trial they would still ask for the same purchase price. That's why they call it free. The cost associated with the box is separate from the cost associated with the subscription. People can rationalize it any way they want to make themselves feel better, but both games offer trials that don't require you to purchase the game. Technically, open beta was a free trial for FFXIV.

Personally, I got access to the free trial period during 1.0 and during ARR, but I never spent a dime on the game. For me it was all free Smiley: nod

If we get a massive injection of things to do at 50, including PVP, then I think the game will be fine. Constantly running Ampador, or primal hard modes, is going to bore people to tears.

It will last but I don't think the hype will stay around for long. I'm honestly already bored with it, besides running around checking out the amazing environments, and fate grinding. it's kind of empty, it seems to be trying to capture the COD crowd as part of its player base. quick to jump in and learn, fast progression for the ADD players to keep them from getting bored. I played XI for many years and that game had something ffxi I don't think will ever capture. I really can't see playing this game past the free trial

Strange, I log in and my biggest problem is deciding what to do. Boredom hasn't been an issue... I have THM/CNJ/PUG to 50, CRP/WVR/ALC to 50, BOT/MIN to 50, but I still have Fishing, Goldsmithing, Armorer, Blacksmith, Culinarian, Leatherworking, Gladiator, Lancer, Marauder, Arcanist, Archer, AF for all that, Relic for all that, etc... My head is spinning from everything I could be doing whenever I am online.

well I'm only 29 pug but I've done pretty much the whole story line. here's my main issue really, this game doesn't need to be online. the reason I enjoyed XI so much was because the he had an actual community. you literally had to rely on others to progress, it might have been a pain in the *** but it was fun. hitting a new lvl or getting a mission done actually gave a sense of accomplishment, and finally hitting 75 was pure gold! this game doesn't have any of that, it's just king of like alright what next. that's not what I expect from an MMO game.

lvl29.... u kidding right?

Hmm I think people are a little disillusioned when they thought that leveling with a bunch of people from their server, as is the case in past XI, somehow formed a bond between you and them. Sometimes, you made a good friend...sure. Most of the times, though, I was just in a party with a bunch of strangers with one goal in mind: gain levels. If I never saw them again, it wouldn't matter. If I did, well that'd be cool but not expected.

At the same time, I do think this game does suffer from lack of social interaction right now. Usually, social interaction becomes a big deal once endgame makes its appearance. While we have Bahamut Coils and primal HMs to contend with right now, it's nothing really 'big' that is capable of pulling everyone into it like Sky did. Everyone could do Sky and have some fun together. You might have wiped on Byakko but at least you got together to farm the items to pop him.

If we are given content like that, I think 14 will last a long time. I think it will last a long time regardless, actually. If we aren't...then it will still last a while but people will move on to the next big thing in much larger droves than we are about to see when the free trial period ends.

I think people are truly missing the genius behind FFXIV. Once the PVP content rolls in, more content that is group oriented is patched in, the Golden Saucer is implemented and the expansions start to roll out, that "softcore" main quest that is the skeleton structure of the game will simply be the crutch you fall back on to get to where you need to go when advancing in the more difficult content that is obviously to come.

The Day 1 content has to flow well. If it didn't, it would force new players to grind for hours on end right from the get-go. I know that there is a large population of former XI players who would be more than happy to see that, but the days of grind-fest MMOs are long over. It's an antiquated concept.

Not in this market. They couldn't sell 2002's FFXI today.

Look, I appreciate that there are people who really enjoyed the prospect of FFXI leveling to cap taking years. It took me about two years to get my first job to 75. But please understand that in order for a game to sell well enough to justify supporting it, it has to be appealing to more than a handful of people. FFXI doesn't have to care now (although the level grind has been drastically reduced even there) because it's made all the money it needs to make. It's all just gravy for them now.

If you'd like a game that punishes you for playing it though, try Wizardry Online. That game is built around that very premise.

The counterargument to that is the the glut of modern themepark MMORPGs we've seen come and go recently. Lotro, SW:TOR, Rift, GW2, among others - they all came out of the gate strong and promised to be the new MMORPG on the block, yet none of them have managed to latch on to any significant amount of marketshare six months after release.

There's no need to point and contrast every MMORPG released in the past decade, specifically in regards to old school FFXI/EQ mechanics, but to state a FFXI-type game wouldn't make it today I feel is incorrect simply because we haven't really seen any MMORPG released in recent years that's had significant success despite excluding those 'grinds' as a notable part of the core gameplay. World of Warcraft pioneered this trend, and it's obviously successful, but history has shown us WoW is the exception, not the rule.

It's difficult to make the correlation between what mechanics drive a successful online role playing game vs what hinders it in today's market, but given the absolute inundation of soloable, quest-based, easy and non-meaningful leveling MMORPGs recently compared to what we had 10 years ago, one could just as much make the argument that a publisher couldn't sell a WoW/Rift/SW:TOR-type FFXIV today based on those similarities alone. I don't profess to be smart enough to know what the best MMORPG released today would look like, but recent trends show us "it can't have a leveling grind" isn't any more correct than "leveling has to be fast and soloable."

As for the personal side of "will you be here in 12 months?": Despite being a 1.0 CE and legacy member, I've yet to subscribe to 2.0, and I doubt I will. Meaningless, fast and solo leveling doesn't appeal to me, and I absolutely despise "face the boss toward the blue wall and stand in the purple circle, unless the boss turns red, then face him toward the green wall and stand in the orange circle" gimmicky type MMORPG mechanics. If FFXIV had included a significant and lengthy group-based leveling requirement, I would have subscribed for life as it's an incredibly polished and well made game. Right now though, it's just another modern MMORPG with forgettable and trivial leveling content where the game starts at endgame and is nothing but instanced dungeon raids for better ilvl stats. There's dozens of MMORPGs like that on the market right now, I have no interest in adding yet another one to my library.

Of course it will last, and for many many years to come. Over all i say xiv is superior to xi, that apparent needed "community" is far far over-rated (and errr kinda phoney) from xi as opposed to what it really is like there.

Content will be added in due time .

As long as they never forget that all playstyles count equally to the suvivability of this game then the game will thrive to its maximun, if they start leaning too far either way, subs will fall.

There must be rewarding content for solo, duo, small party and raiders. None should be 5x as better rewarded. allow ppl to choose their path not bottlenecked into a linear predetermined route or you are fooked. Differences in rewards is expected, but extremes will not = $ for SE in the long run.

They have done very well so far, simply with the addition of duty finder, benefits for manyyyy will outweigh the downside.

In my books they are doing a very good job so far :)

I didn't buy this game to fight others, as I'm not PVP orientated. So hopefully this PVP everyone wants doesn't mean "become like Aion". They could implement ballista again but with way more options(and less limited).

I haven't finished my coffee this morning so I'm a cranky *****, but a pet peeve of mine has been repeated multiple times in this thread.

The word is trial. T R I A L. It is pronounced "try-ul" and is phonetically different from "trail" which is pronounced "tray-ul" if you're in the south and rhymes with stale everywhere else.

Please stop calling it a "free trail" before I shoot myself.

Its funny when people who haven't completed the main story complain that the main story is short, because if you actually completed the main story, you'd know that the story doesn't actually end. That's as close to spoiler-y as I'll get, because I don't want to ruin things for the 29 PGL in this thread.

Also, there's plenty to do as far as content. Not all of it is hand-holdy content though, so some people will complain. I don't mind the solo/anonymous nature of a lot of the content. You always have the option to do it with friends if you have them.

What a funny thread. This game lasted more than 12 months when it was horrible.

Now it's awesome.

I'm going to be playing this game in my nursing home with a jack in my head so I can play despite chronic arthritis.
