If ESO is releasing on xboxone...Follow

Why isnt ARR? If Bethesda (a much smaller company) can work with microsoft to get an mmo on the one, then Im thinking SE maybe needs to rethink their stance on it.

SE's official answer is that Xbone wouldn't allow cross-platform servers.

That is, the Xbone ARR players would only be able to play with other Xbone ARR players, and not PC players or PS3 players.

Microsoft allowed it for XI but they said "Nope" for ARR so SE was like, okay then, no ARR for you.

TESO may not mind having its Xbone players segregated. Or perhaps Microsoft has changed its stance on this too, in which case SE is certainly welcome to revisit it.

Maybe it will end up happening by the first expansion if the game keeps going strong.

Not that I own the one or have a horse in the console wars, but I think SE shouldnt write off the one, thats a lot of players (was a 360 player of XI here)

My opinion is: Cross platform = sharing their players with PS3 players. MS don't like the sound of that. PC is a non issue for obvious reasons.

Yes this doesn't explain the deal with FFXI, but MS has changed in the last 11 yrs.

I was under the impression that this was because Microsoft was pushing the whole "Xbox Exclusive" thing on developers for the Xbox One so they would be able to actually sell the thing. It's what they did with Dead Rising 3 and several others. Could have had it on the PS3/4, but no :/ Microsoft didnt allow it.

If I were a game producer looking to sell my product, I would want it to be on a platform with a sizable audience. More prospective players means more sales. MS probably wants some of SE's gil to make it happen and we all know SE has a tight coinpurse.

As far as I know that's still the plan for ESO.

Quote:
Will I be able to play with my friends that are playing on different platforms?
The megaserver technology featured in The Elder Scrolls Online will allow PC (Windows OS) players and Mac players to play together. Xbox One players will play on a specific megaserver with other players using an Xbox One. PlayStation 4 players will have a specific megaserver dedicated to only those players using a PS4.

I wonder if they wanted the separate communities for ESO all along, or if they decided to go that route because of those MS policies.

This

The reason FFXIV isnt on Xbox but ESO is is because FFXIV has and wants cross platform play while Microsoft wont allow. ESO however WONT have cross platform play thus Microsoft is ok with al.lowing that on Xbox:

This is the correct answer. And as far as I know, MS has not changed their stance.

I believe that FFXI was an exception because MS was desperately trying to get a Japanese audience on board with the Xbox 360 at the time, so that's why SE was allowed to port FFXI to that console. Of course, MS figured out they didn't need Japan that badly after all, so that's why FFXIV doesn't have a Xbox version. They didn't seem to mind when it came to FFXIII and its sequels though, but of course, those are offline games.

Yes, MS simply doesn't want to allow online cross platform games on their consoles. Yoshi really wanted to make a version of ARR for the 360, but MS said no because of that reason. If there was a version for the Xbox, the Xbox players would have to have their very own servers.

Doesnt seem like it. Only ones who've written it off are those whove already chose their nexgen console.

MS got hit hard when they announced XBOX One DRM practices was gonna work. Sony jumped on it and won over many buyers despite MS eventually changing their stance on some DRM policies. And isn't the XBOX One still gonna be priced 100 bucks more than PS4?

I think the basic answer is that when MS wants something on their machine they break the rules. They didn't want XIV that badly.

MS has become a tyrant, surpassing even Sony's shady practices. I had a 360 but ended up selling it because I got so frustrated with them for not allowing me to watch things I already paid for like Netflix without a gold subscription (actually it was my third after 2 RROD disasters, but this one was the newer Jasper chipset and played fine).

Their new Xbone is more of the same, charging you to access the internet you already have access to, like a modern day America Online. And no, I don't care whether the PS4 will do the same thing. This isn't about PS4 vs XBone.

I get this refusal as SE saying they don't wont be under the thumb of MS. This is how Bethesda ended up.

Thankfully, ZeniMax, their parent company is privately own and not stupid enough to be swallowed by MS(and EA to that extension).

I have been a Microsoft superfan since the original Xbox, BUT I have to tally agree with you on this one. I am about to have a baby and all my finances have gone to that so I didn't re-up my gold subscription and now can't use Netflix which I already paid for which is stupid and frustrating. All I did was get a 3rd Roku box which eliminated the problem but it was dumb I even had to do that. Microsoft has total control of their infrastructure and some of their rules are strangling development in my opinion.

So if SE and MS did work this out.. wouldn't you need an Gold Subscription and a monthly fee ? so you gotta pay twice ?

lol sad but most likely true considering what MS has been doing recently.

Let's be real here. After seeing Deep Down compared to Ryse, FFXIV is the least of your worries if you're getting an XBone.

With FFXI on Xbox you only needed to pay Square a sub, silver worked just fine with xbox live. It didn't connect to their servers.

I think it's more about the amount of money they expect to get, or are charging to allow this.

It's either:

1) MS didn't have ANY faith in ARR, so wouldn't bend at all.
2) SE didn't want to pay the ridiculous amount of money MS probably wanted to "allow" such a cross platform play.
3) Elder Scrolls is much more a MS game than FF, so it may just be from a brand perspective. It would be quite shocking for a TES game to not be on an MS console after all these years.
