The reason you're not finding information is that the Gathering Log pretty much tells you what zones the items are in once you hit the correct level. After that, once in zone, just use Arbor Call or Arbor Call II and track down the nearest node. Once you learn where the nodes are, just return and rinse/repeat your logging.

Not all items are in the log, though. (Or at least, not until you've successfully harvested one.)

For now, I use these:

UUUUUGGGHH I had thought they removed that.... I hit that during the beta, but at an earlier level. I had thought, breezing along in my mining, that they had changed their minds on that.

So I can assume the fun starts at 30 now, huh...

I'm not sure when that starts, but I know I had to look up the location of lvl 20 Sun Lemon the other day because it wasn't listed in the log.

Whoa... hold the phone...

You mean it doesn't show up as a block with a question mark, similar to nodes? In the beta, there were a few items like that in the mining log...

Seriously SE...

Just... UGH

It's not like back in XI where NOTHING was actually listed as what to craft and how to craft it. It's just a little bit of discovery. Go in a zone. Use Arbor Call. Profit. But yes, how dare they try to incorporate a bit of adventure in an MMO. /sarcasm

You know where you've been as far as previous zones. Head into higher level zones. That's it.

Also, this is a link to a thread here on the first page someone posted.

Oh, I don't mind exploration. I don't mind hunting things down. I was a little put out by the question marked items in the log, but I still went and found them.

What I mind is not even knowing there's items I'm missing. Even if there were a numeric count at the bottom saying 10/12 found. I've passed 20, and had no idea there were items missing. That's my issue. I hate having to use external sites, but I know SE tends to make them essential. I was hoping FFXIV would stray more from that.

Well good information is hard to find, and a search will bring up sites I just never visit and personally won't touch. But other than wanting to read up on mechanics for a class in a forum, I haven't had a need to really research out something I'm looking for. And databases are too young and under developed at this point to use so you get forced into exploring for what you need most often than not. I got started with fishing and I think it it takes the cake in making you figure things out. You don't know what fish are where, where the locations are, what bait to use or what conditions to catch particular fish. And for those reasons fishing has been the most fun for me.

But I'll disagree in saying needing outside wiki resources have felt needed. Provided a player is willing to spend time exploring it out in game.

Thank you for that website so much easier to see what i need

The reason i asked my question is because i am leveling botanist to 50 and i am leveling carpenter along with it and i find i get plenty of xp by just crafting logs to lumber which i know i will use in another craft so im trying to focus on just log farming right now

And needed a guide to help me find where to go to get the job done

To counter what you are saying... (even though personally I hate how fishing has changed)

Fishing has an in-game lexicon of every fish you can catch. Once you catch one, it becomes listed in your lexicon. Therefore, you know how many fish exist total in game (unless they are hiding fish too). By contrast, if the botany/mining logs don't even have a total items found counter, how do you even know that you've missed things if you have not mined/harvested every single node group in the game? I've never needed Sun Lemons. I would not have known where they come from. Take, for example, this. We only know it can be bought for certain. But maybe it CAN be harvested. Or dropped. So now you either have to murder every single mob in the game repeatedly looking for it, or harvest every point in the game to find it. But it also happens to be a quest item. So now it would impede your progress had you not been able to google it and find an answer. Or sit in shout waiting for one. You'd have to scour the world for it.

You see, I prefer a game that contains what I need to know within it. I like to explore, I'm fine with that. But at least make me aware that there are things to explore for. Otherwise I'll assume it is on a vendor I just haven't found, or dropped from something I just haven't killed or been lucky to get a drop from.
