FFXIV ResearchFollow

Hi, I'm currently an undergraduate, and for one of my classes, I'm doing an anthropological study of FFXIV. In particular, I hope to look into social taboos and "unwritten rules" of gameplay and compare them to behaviors/legislation in reality.

If you're willing to take a quick survey for me, there's a link here

If not, please comment on your experiences below.

Thanks in advance.

FYI: This forum has a policy about surveys in general. You are supposed to obtain permission from the admin team before posting surveys, just because we get so many of them. (And most of them are all about the evils of video games, although this one doesn't look like it is.)

I'd find an admin, like Wint, and verify that it's okay to post this. Otherwise it could be deleted without warning.

Thanks for the tip. I thought I scanned over the rules and didn't see anything about surveys, but I must've missed it. I'll email an admin now.

For such a relatively new game, i'm not sure there are a lot of unspoken or unwritten rules yet other than "dont be an idiot".

Certainly dont want to burst your bubble, but why pick FFXIV? You'd be better off with FFXI with it's 11 year long history of going strong already.

Honestly, I picked FFXIV because it was newer. Even with the short time frame I'm limited to, I was hoping to do a good amount of participant-observation. My thoughts were, as a newer community, it'd be easier for me to reach the endgame (getting geared wouldn't be ridiculous) and become part of a good FC.

Unfortunately, as I'm getting closer to my deadline for class, I feel that I'll have to rely more on survey responses/interviews and other studies to write my paper.

It would be interesting to gather data like this when a game is new, and then again years down the road when it is more established. You could compare the kinds of responses and see how the player community within the game changed over time.

Early on there was a guy complaining about "Don't kill my mob." And he'd mention that people come and gank his mob while he's attacking it.

Everyone told him that as long as he got a hit in, he still got the xp and that the social structure of this game was such that it wasn't taboo to help people while you're running around.

In terms of the market board, I think there are strange things people want to be rules but just don't stick. I've seen a lot of posts about how to properly undercut and I haven't seen that gaining traction. imo, this is because the authors of this post don't understand why they are being undercut. Often times people undercutting by a large margin, in some cases so much so that there is a loss, it's because the inventory space is more valuable than the item.

I did your "silly" survey. Just one thing to note, it's not very focused to the age of this game (well for 2.0) nor the genre itself. TBH this survey could be copypasta'd into a forum for any game that had a community of players even single players games for the most part.

So it's been a while. Used WolframAlpha to check, and it's been 1.25 years since I finished the paper.

I wish I had a good excuse for not posting earlier, but I actually just lost track of the bookmarks I had when I got a new laptop, and when refurbing my old one as a gift to someone else, I found this bookmark, and realized I never posted this paper.

So here it is. http://www.filedropper.com/forposting
