Dual boxing help please?!?!?Follow

I have asked on the EQ2 forums for a few months now on and off as they keep botching things up in the game, causing me to find new ways to dual box. Usually it's launchers they keep changing, so I can't login to 2 accounts at the same time on the same computer. Been playing the game since 2005, just after it's launch. Left briefly a couple times over the years to go play a couple other games, but I always come back to EQ2. Since the DOV launch, I've had many issues with the game, and getting more discouraged by the day. Been asking for help on the EQ2 forums, but I either don't get help at all, or if I do, I get some quick little generic response with a particular TSR guy, I've grown to despise. So I come here hoping for help, or I'll most likely have to leave the game out of sheer frustration.

I am NOT a computer wiz, so take note of that before trying to help walk me thru this, if your so kind. My guild is having fits I've canceled my 2 accounts today, and doing all they can to talk me out of it, so I come here for help.

Can anyone take me by the hand, using common everyday english and help me be able to dual box again? I can deal with some of the other issues I'm having with the game, but I've invested too much into my other account, and it's characters to not be able to do this anymore. And it's becoming a deal breaker for me. Help me please save the game for me, so I can continue having fun.

Thanks.

From your post I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do since you use conflicting terms...

The term "dual boxing" implies running 2 accounts on 2 machines ('dual' meaning two and 'box' meaning machine or computer). But your complaint seems to be that you can't service two instances at the same time on a single machine.

So, by "dual box" do you mean that you want to run a single instance of the program on each of two computers or do you mean that you wish to run multiple instances of the program on a single machine?

If you intend the former, (two accounts across two machines) there should be no issue (assuming you have the available bandwidth in your high speed connection) since SOE has always supported multiple subscriptions. On the other hand, if you intend the latter you should understand that it has NEVER been SOE's intention that you should be able to run more than one instance of the game at a time on a single machine.

If you have been able to do this at some point or points of time in the past it was most likely a fluke and not a "feature" that they have ever endorsed or supported. I'm not surprised that they seem reticent to help you do so now!

But aside from the fact that you may have been able to jury rig your system and the program to do it in the past, why would you want to? The requirements for running the game are high enough to begin with. Even with a bleeding edge computer, running a 2nd instance on the same machine would just about insure that both instances looked and ran like boiled crap! Why would you want to take a beautiful game like EQ2 and make it look (and play) ugly?

My suggestion would be to buy a laptop for running the 2nd account and play 2 characters across 2 machines as God intended!!! ASUS sells a nice gaming laptop that will run EQ2 quite nicely for under a grand.

I run 2 accounts on one machine using two monitors, I have been doing this for years now. And I think your quite wrong about SOE frowning on being able to do this, as for years now have been getting advice from their tech support on how to do it. Recently SOE seems to be running on life support and the guys monitoring the forums aren't the greatest and rarely answer a question correctly let alone be remotely helpful.

The old way of doing it was just logging into the game twice using different passwords, and account names, and was a no issue. Then they did something in the game and sort of broke the launcher according to one tech support guys words to me, and told me to get the Station launcher, and login using 2 seperate launchers, now recently they say they aren't supporting the Station launcher, and told me to download this launcher 3 he called it. It worked for a few weeks until DOV came out, and now that ain't working correctly for me.

I was then told to create 2 seperate EQ2 folders, and launch the game thru the applications inside each folder. it worked, till the other day when trying to fix another bug in the game I was having, and not getting any tech support, I uninstalled the game, and reinstalled it, now I lost the launchers I had, and I can't seem to find ones that work at all for me.

I know there are alot of people doing this, so somebody must know how it's now done.

UPDATE: I gave up on SOE support, and went right to the playerbase on the EQ2 forums, and might have found a fix for my problem from others who do the same as I do.

One fix is to use the old disks of the game if you have them, and download the game that way, it will install what they call "the old launcher" and then open one account with the new launcher, and one account with the old launcher. Folks say that works.

The other fix I'm told is to try that Station launcher again. Even though a SOE support guy told me about 2 weeks ago to stop using it, and talked me into just uninstalling it all together when it wasn't patching properly that day. (I'd really like to get that guy fired, he's repeatedly given me bad advice on how to fix problems.) GRRR

Actually, OBD is partially right. The streaming client is the one that does not support multi-boxing. I myself dont box, so I can't help you other than letting you know that as long as you dont use 3rd party programs to control multiple characters (dont even google it, DEVS can read minds), you should be ok.

Patch the game normally, but do not try to run a second instance from the Launcher, instead use the actual EQ2.exe from within the EQ2 folder, and hopefully that would work. In the past when I've run multiple accounts that was how I did it.

Just in case this comes back up again here is some information about 2-boxing.

Two things have changed with EQ2 over the years, the launcher and the resources needed to run EQ2. A few years ago I could run 3 accounts at once with no problem on my single computer. After coming back to the game I could no longer 2-box on a single computer without making some changes.

The solution:
1. Get an early install DVD to put the game on the computer. When installed it will place an icon on the desktop. This is what you want to use when starting the game. I suggest renaming it so you can identify it later. Do not update at this point.
2. Install the most recent version of the game from DVD (if you have it). Installing off of a recent DVD will save you some download time. It will also install a new launcher and place that on your desktop. This launcher is much like the one used for the streaming version of the game and will not allow you to 2-box. Delelete this off of your desktop.
3. Start the game using the old launcher and update.
4. Run the game, go into options, and lower settings in the graphics section to reduce the strain on the machine. I also suggest turning off sound as it can get confusing with two games running. Sound and graphics settings are saved on the computer, not the account so you cannot turn sounds off on one account while leaving it on in the other account.

Now it is time to test the machine and see how well it handles 2-boxing EQ2. You may have to go back into settings and adjust the graphics.

Not sure if anyone still needs help with this but...

Patch the game with EQ2.exe (after an update)
Launch the game with EverQuest2.exe

You can run as many copies of EverQuest2.exe as your computer can handle.
