So I've been seeing a lot of these kinds of stories popping up in the news a lot lately.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/how-federal-agents-foiled-a-murderous-jade-helm-15-retaliation-plot/ar-BBlqM30

Quote:
The men had a deadly plot to lure government forces into a trap, federal officials say, and were amassing a stockpile fit for war.

There were Kevlar helmets and body armor, pipe bombs and handmade grenades, large amounts of gunpowder and dozens of rounds of ammunition for a military-grade sniper rifle.

Federal officials say three North Carolina men — Walter Eugene Litteral, 50; Christopher James Barker, 41; and Christopher Todd Campbell, 30 — spent months compiling their cache, much of it purchased through a military surplus store owner who became so concerned about the plot that the person became the FBI’s informant.

The men were arrested Saturday and charged with conspiracy and amassing weaponry allegedly to combat what they believe is the government’s plan to impose martial law through (among other things) the controversial multi-state military exercise known as Jade Helm.

There are at least a couple of other stories just like it involving different parties. Basically, the paranoid world of make-believe that is the conservative blog-o-sphere/talk radio is getting some people so riled up that they are finally beginning to get themselves killed and/or arrested. I just can't even... I don't know whether to feel sad or filled with glee over this. It's kind of sad because their pathetic hit and run attacks on government officials are potentially dangerous, but hilarious because I just can't believe how incredibly ******* stupid these people are. This is more or less along the same vein as the drama over Benghazi and the more recent Planned Parenthood fiasco, only now these loony-tunes are beginning to feel threatened personally and this is the result.

It just makes my head spin to think about and to try and put myself into their perspective-- trying to imagine such tremendous amounts of fear because, I dunno, the president is black? Do you think perhaps maybe it is time to start toning down the pretend news on the internet somehow or should crank it up a notch and just let all the crazies weed themselves out of the gene-pool?

As I'm sure you're aware, there are more followers than leaders. Additionally, there's a moderately large proportion of the population that can be defined as authoritarian, and a significant subset of that can be classified as right-wing.

Lower levels of education lead directly to lower critical thinking skills and higher levels of compliance. (As a side note, it's a bit ironic that those who refer to others as "sheep" generally fit this pattern, along with the right-wing authoritarian follower traits. Self-examination is not big within this group.)

What you're looking at, then, is a subset of the population who are looking for someone like themselves to follow, who are not well educated overall, and who feel betrayed by the very fact of having someone not like themselves in the perceived position of highest authority in their world view. They'd feel the same way, in some degree, if the President were any other race; the fact that he's black is just more fuel to the fire since this group as a whole tends to be racially bigoted in the most traditional sense, seeing blacks as inferior to whites to a larger degree than, say, people of Latino or Asian heritage.

It's distressing that they would target the military; but it's not that surprising. They don't trust the government, and when it's headed by "others" to whom they can't relate they trust it even less: they ***** and moan about the IRS and the NSA when a white Republican is in office, but they feel more comfortable with the military until they become convinced that the Commander in Chief has somehow corrupted it. Add to that the right-wing talk radio and blogosphere spinning up paranoia about Jade Helm and WalMart and secret tunnels and whatever the **** else they're going on about, and it becomes a matter of when and how rather than if.

If you ever want to get really depressed, check out the groups the Southern Poverty Law Center tracks as hate groups.

Reaping the fruits of the politics of fear. When your platform is "Obama's gunna getchu" then this is the result.

As Samira notes, you've had these anti-government types for ages but it ramped up with the whole "Obama's a Kenyan Muslim Socialist bent on destroying America with his Neo-Colonialism values" bullshit that gets peddled to keep these xenophobic morons in line. After Jade Helm is over, maybe they can go back to protecting some tax criminal's cows in the name of "liberty".

Seems like fewer "9/11 was an inside job and Bush did it so he could grab all Iraq's oil" people stockpile AR-15s though.

I'm not keen on conspiracy types in general but I'd take the guys lining their rooms in tin foil over the ones trying to lure training military personnel into a trap so they can kill them.

I absolutely agree: extremists suck, full stop. However, my screed was in answer to the OP which was in turn about how these particular right-wing nutjobs could have gotten inspired to attempt real violence against real targets.

If you want to talk about environmental extremists or, as Joph pointed out, 9/11 conspiracy cranks or anti-vax idiots, we can certainly do that.

Yeah, I associate "throwing bottles" with anti-NATO or anti-G8 protestors. Who may all be a bag of douche nozzles but they're not getting their ideas from the same sort of places. I'm fairly confident that, if the Powers That Be had their way, Obama wouldn't have to see news of dreadlocked 25 year olds throwing shit during a NATO conference that he's hosting.

Concerned citizens are fighting an oppressive government that doesn't represent their best interests. Isn't this how the 2nd Amendment is supposed to work?

So, like... no one's gonna jump in and say something in defense of these heroic rebels out there fighting for truth and justice? No articles that show us all without a shadow of a doubt that Walmart has a network of secret FEMA Gestapo tunnels? Hmm? Perhaps there is a way to somehow link all of this to Bill Clinton's extra-marital affair? No? We're not going to go down that road? Not even just a little?

There have always been nutters, on all sides. I'm just finding it interesting that the only mainstream folks talking about this are all liberals trying really really hard to gin this up into something significant. Um... Who exactly are we talking about here? Why not just parrot crazy stuff someone said on Coast to Coast and run with that too? Lizard people! Greys! Bigfoots (feet?)! OMG!!!!

Lots of nothing going on here.

They already went over this. The difference is those nutters aren't trying to murder military personnel.

I suppose when people are arrested for stockpiling guns and grenades against the Bigfoot threat and the governor of Washington state promises to use the state militia to keep track of the Bigfoot menace, that'll become a somewhat relevant comparison.

I am, however, willing to meet Gbaji halfway here and agree that the people getting worked up over this are lunatics who deserve to be mocked.

I was mainly reacting to this bit:

Kuwoobie wrote:

This suggests that mainstream conservative talk radio and blogs are somehow feeding this, but that's not remotely the case. There are nutters out there. There have always been nutters. To connect them broadly as "conservatives" with some kind of political affiliation implied is just plain wrong. As I mentioned earlier, I have heard literally nothing about this on any conservative radio show. Maybe a mention here or there, but usually in the context of "there are some crazy nutters who are getting riled up over some normal military exercises" and/or "the folks over at MSNBC are making a big deal about some nutters and trying to paint all conservatives as though we're like them".

So yeah, maybe I'm a bit more sensitive when that same rhetoric gets repeated, but the overwhelming response from conservatives is that anyone involved in this is a nutter/hater/whatever, and anyone suggesting that this is somehow related to conservative politics is drumming the whole thing up just to make that association.

The people involved in this are not motivated by conservative principles. Some of them may call themselves conservatives (but I suspect most would soundly reject that label as being associated with a political ideology "too soft" for them), but they are not in any way acting on conservative principles. In the same way that the Black Panthers aren't acting on liberal principles. Both "sides" are well out of the mainstream. Far far out of it. We should make sure to treat them that way.

Um... Yes. Not one mention of this I've heard on any mainstream conservative radio show has been of the "OMG, the military is planning something and we need to defend ourselves". All mentions I've heard have been of the "There's some nutty people who think this, but there's nothing to it and the only reason it's being talked about is because liberal sites are jumping on said nutty people in order to paint conservatives in a poor light". Thus, not "feeding" the conspiracy at all.

If any "side" is feeding this, it's the left, not the right. Absent a bunch of left leaning sites and media outlets continually talking about this, most people would not know about it, or care about it. It would just be one of a long list of crazy conspiracy theories that don't amount to anything and most people just ignore. But by using it as a tool to attack conservatives by association, the liberal talking heads are actually spreading the conspiracy itself. The tail is most definitely wagging the dog on this one.
