FFXIV PvP - or rather GvGFollow

According to a quote from a German interview
http://jpgames-forum.de/jpgames-de-foren/news-rund-um-japanische-videospiele/23211-final-fantasy-xiv-our-new-interview-with-naoki-yoshida/
FFXIV's PvP might turn out to be GvG (group vs group) battles, similar to the way the concept was implemented in FFXI:
Quote:
YOSHIDA: And we are going to implement two types of PvP for A Realm Reborn. There will be 4vs4 and 8vs8 player.

Actually that's right what I expected, considering the cooperative focus of FF games. It should also alleviate the fear that classes will have to be exactly "matched" for performance in PvP, with the associated detrimental effects on PvE combat. However, I guess some people will not be too happy that this also implies that a WHM will not necessarily be able to win in a one on one fight with a raging MNK.

I'm sure it will help with balance complaints somewhat, but even so, there will be valid arguments for and against certain jobs in PvP I'm sure, no different than how jobs are discriminated against for XP and certain events in FFXI. Some jobs won't be desired in PvP while others will be coveted. Hopefully they have some sort of plan for this and don't decide to just go with it.

It would be awesome if they would implent a huge battleground with outpost and fortresses, or a batteground where one team has to besiege a fortress while the other grp defends it :P But ill be happy with 4v4 and 8v8 ^^ Wonder how they will balance it tho, imagine a BLM nuking you into oblivion in matter of seconds :P

Yeah a WSG or Twin Peaks type PvP game would be super fun. In order for this PvP business to work in FFXIV though, the combat better become more fluid and allow for split second interrupts/jump shot type gameplay. I wouldn't know if it's come that far though, I haven't played since V1.

what happened to them saying "this will be the first FF to have TRUE PvP"? I mean if its just group vs group then wouldnt FFXI have been the first to have TRUE PVP?

I think FFXI's Pankration was a great take on PvP. Of course, there should be the type of PvP that uses your existing combat skills, but it's also fun when the rules are completely different. I hope they keep that type of variety in mind in FFXIV.

The idea itself wasn't bad, but the biggest problem was ffxi's pvp was class balance.

The thing I like about Ballista in comparison to other PvP iterations in MMO's was that it was more than just a straight up slug fest. I like the "game" nature to it, something a bit more than I punch you, you zap me, until someone dies. I used to love Alterac Valley in WoW when it first came out, where it had all sorts of quests and you could help out either by being an awesome PvP'er or by farming wolf skins etc to boost your NPC army.

I hope if XIV implements PvP (which is sounding likely) it wraps it up in an engaging minigame. Something more than capture the flag.

The problem with classic Ballista was that it ran on a defined schedule, and if the scheduled match didn't have enough people, it just didn't happen.

They made the entry barriers for the other variation, Brenner in Abju-tab whatever it was called, far too high for a casual to participate. If you weren't already part of a Ballista group, you were out of luck. They also gave it a terrible name no one could spell.

Pankration aka FFXI Pokemon was about as fun as chocobo racing. That is, it wasn't that much fun. About the only time I can recall having fun with Panky stuff was when one of our pullers took a picture of Tzee Xicu Idol in Dynamis right before he died. That was pretty lulzy - and after that we made a rule about not taking hanky panky pictures of the boss in Dynamis when you were supposed to be killing the boss. (Stats were meh from them anyway.)

I hope that the designated group PVP zones or however they do it is easy to get involved in, easy to access, and just good clean silly fun. Like you enter a zone, randomly get assigned "red" or "blue" upon entry, and just go have a slugfest on the enemy team. Getting KO'd boots you out of the arena with a five minute cooldown. Give it insane conditions randomly, like some of the dumber floors of Nyzul Isle ("For this round, white magic is restricted!" "For this round, the weather is cloudy with a chance of meatballs!")

We ran Brenner once in a while for somethin' different to do, but ignored whatever it was set up to be. We just met on the beach and held 1v1 fights.

Yup. We tried to "play" brenner... we all got confused and just did the same thing as you guys. I think PvP is by far the most addictive aspect of my gaming. For example I play Halo and WoW but exclusively for the PvP aspects. It's hard to do PvP and not get swept up in the rage or man mode. I hope the dev team makes it co-op style pvp like Ballista in order to stem the number of elitists who will inevitably try to say that PvP > PvE.
