Is 14 worth playing?Follow

#1 Mar 28 2013 at 3:57 AM Rating: Excellent
Forgive me if this has been posted 38568975987 times already, I searched and couldnt find any threads from within the last 6 months. (If there is one, can a mod close this thread and link me to that thread please?)

I am an old school ffxi player, played it from day one release in the US. (When every JP player you met was max level already <_<) Since the lifting of the level cap from 75 to 9000 (or whatever it is I'm obviously exaggerating) I just couldn't find it in me to play the game anymore. I am sure no one really cares about my mmo life's story so I will skip to the point.

I never bought ff14, but an ex girlfriend I was living with did. I played a character on her account, and really liked the game... until I hit level 20. It was mostly solo play with very few things to do for someone like me who LOVED the old party system of ffxi. I know that SE:E has been working on the game from the ground up to the point of having to completely rerelease it and that piqued my interest.

So I ask my original question. Is 14 worth playing? IE if I bought the game when it gets released again here in a few weeks, will I be wasting my money. I know there are quite a few people bound by the NDA of the beta, and I would never want you to break that by telling me everything about the game down to monster hit point details. I just want to know is the game fun to play?

Will I spend my 50-70 dollars well on this game or will I end up wasting the money like I did on SWTOR? (Seriously. Was it so hard to add a new Operation in each month and stop pandering to the PVPing minority?)

That's a tough question to answer. Everyone has their own ideas on worth. I would suggest that you register for the beta (open beta) and then maybe you can form an opinion. Personally, I liked 1.0 enough to give ARR my undivided attention, but opinions will vary.
I would also do some research on what they have done to the game already, and that might be enough to sway you.

I think it will be. I'm in the same boat you are with FFXI. It's not going to be the same, but there seems to be plenty of ways to level in groups. The only issue will probably be forcing yourself to do so instead of just soloing the whole time. I doubt there will be much benefit from grouping for exp.

Also I think ARR will only be $30. at least that's what the amazon pre order thing is saying.

Is ARR the full game or just an expansion? 30 Bucks for the full game would be freaking awesome.

It's going to be the full game. For those that bought 1.0 they won't have to buy ARR either.

If you really liked the game up until level 20, I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy yourself. I'll do you a favor and be specific. If you're a Final Fantasy fan, you will enjoy the fan service. I must warn you, you will not find Final Fantasy XI here. If your looking for the MMO standard with the Final Fantasy universe, you have come to the right place. With the Crystal Palace, Magitek Armor mounts, Gold Saucer, PVP, Chocobo pets that fight alongside you in battle, expensive house and airship building, you might have a gay time. Those are just a small sample of what the new director is seducing us with. I'm lazy right now, maybe someone might point you in a direction so you can see the information for yourself.

I must say though, all of this should be consolidated on the main web site. It's actually quite silly that the in depth information is scattered all over the web.

I'm working on a post that will do just that, but it's slow going trying to find everything.

I had replied to this but I can't remember what has been mentioned publicly and what is <NDA>'d so let me just say "Please look forward to it!".

Well its not that scattered, you find them in the website and in their forums. Top 2 places to start your search really.

With that been said i have never played XI (well i am now for a week) or 1.0 so ARR will be new for me, but i can say that from what i 've seen and heard it has what it takes to become a good MMO. Time will tell but i am willing to give it a try.

Just wait until Open beta and try it yourself . Also according to the roadmap the dreaded NDA is lifted during phase 3 of the beta. Not long to go now ;) http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxiv/download/en/FFXIV_2.0_BETA_Roadmap_EN.pdf

If it were as you say, Wint wouldn't have said it was moving along slowly. Nor would he need to work on rectifying it. There is quite a lot of information. The main site is a bit lacking. I've been keeping up with the information that is released, so I'm up to date. New people coming in don't know what's in store for them. I won't be surprised if we see many more threads like these.

Go Wint GO! Consolidate!

Wint may said that but i said otherwise as well. There is no wrong or right. I found the info easier i guess. Before i register in the forums here i did manage to get all the info i wanted for ARR from the site and the forums (and their support page as well).

You know I'm simply talking about putting the information in one spot right? There are countless interviews and unofficial posts etc that are scattered all over the forums and various sites. Yes, people may post the outside information on the main forums, but then they get buried. There is no singular go to spot. I am speaking about the newly interested people. I'm not interested in your feelings of right or wrong, I'm simply considering outside myself. Yes, you found the information fast, and maybe you were interested enough to dig deeper. Other's may not feel as compelled to work as hard to find out more, unless it's consolidated. The whole purpose for the post he's slowly working on.

But you did tell me i was wrong in the previous post that is why i answered. Nevertheless i do not care. I simply stated that i managed to get the info easily. I didn't attack anyone.

And certainly i wouldn't say no, to what wint is doing. I even send a PM to him for something like that a week or 2 ago as he can also tell you.

You do know that this started when you told me I was wrong, right?. Which I why I replied. (sound familiar?) Now you're telling me that I told you that you were wrong, and you had to reply. You asked Wint to do the very thing I was advocating. So... you just wanted to say that I was wrong and leave it at that, even though you say it has nothing to do with right or wrong. No one is attacking anyone, I'm just wondering why you felt the need to make it all about yourself. By our last exchange, I'm wondering why this dialogue even existed. What's the purpose of Wint making a post of all the info, if it was already in one spot, and why it would be moving slowly? You just sounded like they guy that says, "It's not hard, because I did it with ease." You seem like a pleasant enough guy, so I harbor no ill feelings, but I will almost always speak my mind. You should keep in mind that when you disagree with someone, they just might have something to say about it.

Anyway, to get back on topic, there was a person on the main forums that had a post that had a list of "What to expect in 2.0." I can't seem to locate it again as it probably dropped in popularity. He actually did a lot of work in even listing the dev posts that popped up on threads that were very popular. Shame. I'll try looking again when I get time later.

Yours is going to be better?! Smiley: bowdown

Lol, it's cool that FFXIV would be nothing without the great people in it. So many people spend their free time doing things that they don't get paid to do.

Well..I do get paid, but I wasn't asked to do this, it's something I want to do to help newcomers know what is going on Smiley: thumbsup

30 Bucks for the full game is a pretty nice price. I am kind of disappointed to hear that the game isnt like ffxi, but oh well. If I wanted xi I would play xi. I was looking at some of the new in game videos of ARR and, when compared release client 14, it looks significantly better.

I think my final question, does this game do most of the leveling solo or do you form parties for EXP? IE you can level solo, but get better exp by partying. Or is it still the old method of grinding solo for the best experience.

Also did they remove that stupid level cap system where you could only get certain amounts of exp per day?

This is what I was already afraid of when I thought about it (and posted) the other day.

I have a feeling most average people who don't care enough to do research (and I don't really blame you, so I'm not calling you stupid or anything) will just think FFXIV: ARR is an expansion.

and... it sort-of is, but it's more of a re-release, because expansions are more about adding content, and while this is adding content, it's mostly going back and replacing and revamping old content.

Leveling in a group (via dungeon raids, FATE, or Leves) will be faster than solo.

Yes. However, they also increased the XP to next level and slowed down how fast you gain XP as well.

Yea, it's what I was trying to say. If you're a major fan, most likely the information will come at you faster. However, I think we'd want to attract curious bystanders as well. The information is a bit confusing to new people. At first glance, because I'm all caught up, it doesn't seem that confusing. On the main forums there were so many threads of people just confused as to what this game really entails.

Get ready for more of these threads to pop up the closer we get to release.Smiley: smile

There is option to do all of those. It wont be surprising to learn that the best way of leveling is through parties in dungeons. However, the major pain past FFXI-er can all agree with is, seeking or putting together a party after 2-3 hours was bad. So you can solo if you want to if you have less time. How you decide to level up is up to you.

Yea, I understand your disappointment, and your acceptance about it not being like FFXI is very much valued here. Soon as you meet some friends in game and start the story, I'm sure you'll forget about your EX. Smiley: nod The story quality should be enough to remind you of FFXI's good times.
