Character customization extremely dated?Follow

Anyone else get the impression from that this game's character customization is really dated and limited?

In most games I can customize my character a ton, and make it really stand out from everybody else. A good character creator tool is practically a standard, required feature in any MMO. On FFXIV every member of a race looks the same pretty much.

I've been told they're adding to it, but that probably just means a couple hairstyles, etc. No sliders/stretching/feature placing options.

I'm not a big fan of stretchers and sliders to begin with since they usually result in mutant-looking characters. And I don't think character customization is necessarily of tremendous importance, either, although players will certain compare one character creator to another. But I must admit that the XIV character creator was a bit on the sparse side in light of all the game's other failings. I'm happy to sacrifice some character customization for elevated gameplay and other features, but we obviously didn't get that in 1.0.

The customization does seem a bit lackluster compared to 1.0. In 1.0, I spent a good 30-45 minutes creating my character, but in 2.0, maybe 5 minutes. Even though there were a few greyed pallets, it was only a few, which is still lacking.

Yea hm, as we already discussed this in like 2 more threads i will for the third time say my opinion.I do not believe it is THAT limited. It doesn't have all the extra features that some might have but are those really necessary? I customized 2 of my characters and i must say i was quite satisfied. An MMO should have plenty options for customization i agree but to what extent? For me the ones that it had were more than enough. I seriously don't understand people that want to change the "chin" height or how small their eyebrows are, or how many abs can you count on your body (or how fat you want to be).

But of course this is my opinion and everyone has the right for their opinion as well. But seriously as katchi said i had 2 friends that started playing AION and from day 1 i believed it would fail. They spend more than an hour customizing their damn character and look where that lead them. So i will sacrifice the fat cheek of my char or if i count 5 or 6 abs on him for a better gameplay.

All in all the customization is more than passable for me.

I don't like sliders at all, and I generally care more about my character actually looking good over being unique. Of course more options is always nice but I am happy to say that at least in this game I can look good in several different ways which is something I think a lot of games with more fleshed out customization lacks. That is not to say it is because they have more options, but if I have to choose between many many ugly characters or a few good looking ones, I'll take the latter option any day. Like I said of course it wouldn't hurt to have both but since I can at least make my character look good I don't really mind it if they focus on other things.

It's a fair trade off. They could also put more options but have restrictions on them so you can't mutate things to extreme levels.

I haven't seen it for myself, but I do understand the want for sliders. Ugly characters are possible, but on the plus side, everyone can make something completely unique. You can make a character look more like yourself, or anything you want. I'd like to see what the creator looks like at launch before I say whether I like it or not, but I do see the point in sliders. Overall though, it's not going to impact my enjoyment of the game, other than that first 15-20 minutes. I can almost always find a face I like fairly easily, even with limited choices.

I hate sliders, I love choosing presets for nose mouth chins etc.

So no, I don't. In beta I was able to re-create me exact character in 1.0 so it's no different to me. Additionally I was quite impressed with the level of customization they allowed for male mi'qote.

So, other than:
-skin tone
-hair
-color
-style
-highlights (seriously, hair highlights)
-eyes
-color
-shape
-nose
-lips
-shape
-color
-eyebrows
-face
-body size
-height
-girth
-tattoos
-ears
-voice

I'm sure there's even more options, so I"m not sure what you're talking about. What else do you want to customize, character allergies? There's more than enough to keep you busy upon character creation, especially if you're trying to get your character to look perfect in your eyes.

SE is also very concerned about keeping the data transmission from each character as tight as possible. It's not as big a deal as it was when XI first came out since it had to run on a 56K modem, but they also want to make sure that the game sips bandwidth lightly. The more variables you introduce into a character that are not built directly into the client, the more information that the server has to send about each characters. Limiting it to one click options instead of sliders greatly reduces the amount of data needed to describe a specific character.

Other games may be far less concerned about bandwidth, under the assumption that all their players will be on unlimited broadband.

Right now it just looks like a bunch of different characters in different wigs and colors. You can't even make a black character that actually looks black. They just look like a white person with black skin. The Lalafells are all clones in slightly different wigs.

hahahahaha. So true. Is that option there because it has to be? Take it out or make it look real...like Sazh. HE was a legit black man.

Smiley: laugh

Not to mention they give you a good selection of differing colored eyes (as in 1 eye is a different color)

Additionally, Mi'Qotes have like 4 tails to choose from, including tail length. Males can have a lion tail poof.

In 1.0 I think I saw 1 person who looked like me, and that's my fault for picking the douches fauxhawk..
