Is combat too flashy?Follow

Is it just me that finds combat too flashy? I haven't seen a lot of feedback on this online.

Spell and action effects are well done but I think they're a bit too much. Every little thing is a light show of epic proportions to the point where I feel that later on your truly awesome spells will just look the same as the one you got at level 1. I haven't made it far enough into beta to try dungeons and other group content but FATEs felt confusing. I can tell the fighting happens somewhere in the middle of the small sun burning bright in front of me but other than the random spell effect, I can't tell what's going on.

I have seen someone mention a setting to lower spell effects but didn't find anything of the sort (on PS3).

What do you all think? Time to tone it down a bit?

Yes, it is a bit flashy,but somewhere is (or will be) a setting to dial that down.

I don't know.. i liked this flashy battles. If there is an option to lower it i don't think i will ever do it except if i have problems with my pc.

I agree it felt like I was in a cloud of destruction during FATEs but for the most part I didn't think the effects were too bad. The 'option' to tone it down is definitely ideal. Sometimes I just want to be inside a cloud of destruction.

I felt it was way to flashy to the point it was distracting from watching signs that mobs where gonna do something you want to dodge.

Maybe what's really needed is an auto tone down option. I mostly like the spell effects when playing alone too, and I don't really want to tone down all of them. But it would be nice if there was some kind of (optional) cap to how much is shown when a large group of players are fighting together.

FATEs get crazy. They themselves should be toned down a bit. I liked the ones where there was one big mob that everybody was bashing on, instead of the 15 mobs appeared and who the hell knows what anybody is doing.

yeah it was to flashy, i mean the lvl one attacks felt like i was doin some high lvl ability to it when really im just hittin it. if those are the early lvl ones i couldn't imagine what the high abilities look like.

I guess I am in the opposite camp on this one.

In 1.0, I played four different jobs. Honestly, if you made my character invisible, and just showed me the skills, there was nothing to differentiate one skill from another or just the stupid base attack. I liked the flash and feel of combat, even in FATEs (FATEs felt like a mess to me but I had thought that was just my inexperience at being in one lol).

I do find it a little much at times, but when I'm just running through a zone and can see tons of other people effects going off it puts a smile on my face. It adds to the already VERY vibrant world around you. Every where I go there's people killin' something.

I liked the flash most of the time, but really in FATEs, it was a little much. An auto tuner would be great!

I would agree that watching other people fight in a zone is pretty fun while running by. Did anyone notice how some mobs will have a small red circle appear before they do whatever attack they are about to do? Does that stuff hit you if you're not part of that fight? Somebody would be fighting next to me, and their mob would do that, and I always just high tailed it away. Never got a chance to see if it hits you or not.

I agree that there is too much flash during FATEs, especially given the improvements that could be made to targeting. I played THM this weekend, though, and I really enjoyed the effects of the spells; they were interesting, appropriate, and not distracting in the least.

There were options to turn off spell and effect animations for other characters, other party members, and even yourself. I turned off other characters effects when I knew I was going to be doing some FATEs, and it definitely helped. I think it was either in the system config menu or the character config.

Yes and No! I have no problem with it being flashy, but in dungeons and FATES it can get a bit overwhelming, every little thing, is like a LIMIT BREAK in terms of flashiness... They can tone it down, and make it scale as you level up etc etc.

Nah I want my spells to kill people with epilepsy :P but yeah, some of the animations are a bit to flashy XD been in a few FATEs where I couldn't see the NM due to rainbows going everywhere

Yeah, when you get more than a few characters together fighting the same thing it kinda looks like a rave.

I am loving the mage casting animations <3

As stated. There is an option to turn off the effects. There are three options one for your self, others not in your party and your party ( I think). From there you can choose to show all, some or non of the effects. I have mine set to show all my effects and some of the effects for everyone else. It helps cut down on the chaos when there is a huge battle going on.

I personally like the flashy stuff, but I can see the RP crowd turning it down to make things look a bit more realistic. Both look cool in their own way I think. I'm fairly easily entertained by shinies though so I'll be leaving the effects on.

I agree. I think that the flash is great, in moderation. Like, the basic "heavy swing" shouldn't shoot off fireworks, while other abilities should. As it is, everyone using a basic attack in a fate makes it hard to understand what is going one, where if they made it perhaps flashy only when completing a combo.. I think it would work better. Maybe have the animation intensity vary based on how far into the combo you are (like a three-tiered combo would be the flashiest.)

When we were doing my first Sastasha run our MRD did the 2-level limit break (when both limit meters are full) and it was pretty much the sweetest thing ever, I wish we could post video of that kind of stuff. I didn't manage to get a SS of it when he was doing it.

The flash has been toned down a bit too, there was a FATE outside of Quarrymill that had 30 goblins all doing bomb toss that would make epileptics go into seizure if they watched it in phase 2.

hahahah! I cant wait for the flash option i will lower it abit i found it hard to see where people and thing were at. Also they need to add a filter so i dont have to see everyone elses dmg and buffs its jsut cluttering up my screen.
