CHOOSE YOUR FATE
June 12, 2013
Greetings all!
Fernehalwes here.

It's the last day of E3, and that means...a new developer walkthrough!
This time, we have a rundown of the FATE (Full Active Time Event) system.

Phases 1 and 2 of the beta test only gave a sample of what the system has in store for players, as phase 3 will be introducing a LOT more. And when I mean a LOT, I mean A LOT. How much, exactly, does A LOT entail, you ask? Try over 100 new FATEs! And remember, we're still in beta!

With the sheer number of main scenario, class, job, and side quests; battlecraft, fieldcraft, and tradecraft guildleves; guildhests, instanced dungeons, AND the hundreds of random FATEs, I think it's safe to say there will be more than enough to keep everyone busy for quite a long time.

I know some people have been lamenting that there's no open world exp grinding and this really seems to be the answer to that.

After seeing this video I can't wait to round up a party and go Fate hunting. Especially the chains where mobs invade and kidnap NPCs. Reminds me of Besieged.

In phase 2 I got from 20 to 30 mostly hunting FATEs and the occasional Toto Rak run.

20 to 30, dang. I only made it to 15 in phase 3

I never did much with the crafted gear, I just coasted along on whatever I got from quest rewards but at 17 I got that body piece from Copperbell that beat everything else.

In your opinion based on what you've done in Beta P3 (I'm trying to purposely not play too much, but it's hard...), would you say that a group of five people could go around to FATEs and use those as their "group grinding" to level primarily if they chose? I've a read a few times that a handful of players just went to a higher level/not well traversed area in P3 and were grinding out FATEs. I know that solo I managed to get the giant toad boss FATE in Central Thanalan down to 90% and he took quite a few hits to finally kill me so it seemed possible as long as we had at least one person capable of healing, but wanted further confirmation.

I ask because the dungeon runs look to be aimed at light parties (4) and I'll currently have what looks to be myself (eventually Paladin), a Black Mage, a White Mage, a Monk, and either a Summoner or a Dragoon and that would leave someone out unless dungeons could scale up to 8 people which would be incredibly awesome.

Grinding FATEs is definitely a viable way for leveling, and you guys could do some Guildleves when there is a lull in the FATEs (They seem to have points when they get slower and then pick back up). The XP is always good and the monetary rewards not bad.

Truth be told, i was sick of leves in 1.0. Mostly because it seemed to be 1 of few things to do, and it felt terribly grindy. With Fates, quests, storyline missions, and dungeons, leves seem like a nice way to kill a little time. But, as for the topic, Fates are pretty fun if you have a good targeting scheme. I use the middle mouse button to do it, and while i'm running around...it seems to work out great, as i have gotten pretty good compensation for it. This was mostly on my CNJ too (Thank you Aero!).

Edit: Your targeting controls will obviously vary.
