Stat Selection on GearFollow

I paid a visit to the Level 23 Weapon Vendor in Vesper Bay and noticed that he had quite a varied selection of armor. I was actually able to select pieces of gear that specifically had Spell Speed on them for my Conjurer. Sure a piece or two might have had lower defense than other possible choices, but the stat values were the same. The gear system is a lot like WoW's, but it does seem like there is a bit of FFXI in there as well.

I think this is going be a big area where crafting will come in. You might get gear from questing and dungeons, but it may not have your preferred stat on it. Crafting will most likely fill these holes, and with all three sources you will be able to put together your best set. Sure there will be plenty of people that get by with what they can find, but around level 30 or so I have a feeling that players are going to start wanting to pimp out their sets.

Crafters won't be benefiting from crafting gears because of the gears themselves, mostly crafters will benefit from Materia. Most of the crafted gears including the high-end 1.0 that was class specific/or required for Relic has passable stat, but with Materia Slots. You also required crafted gears to spiritbond to make materia.

As a side note, from early testing (by others) it seems that spell and skill speed are basically trash stats as they are currently calculated in the game. The amount needed to realize a significant reduction of the globabl cooldown is unreasonably high, and it seems like one would be better off focusing on other stats. Let's hope that gets changed!

Or maybe, as you suggest, crafting will offer some worthwhile speed boosts.

I don't see how Skill Speed is trash. I ran into a DRG who had +112 SS on his DD gear. Good stats AND the increase to SS. His GCD was down to 2.39. A MNK of the beta forums posted a picture where his was down to 2.09 (stacked Greased Lightning) and he didn't even have a whole lot of +SS gear on.

In long fights that is going to make a difference, so I'd hardly say that +SS is "trash". Maybe a bit underwhelming without anything to really test its usefulness? Not to mention at some point I bet they'll put a class with Haste in the game.

I would love to see there be an actual viable choices in how you decide to gear your character. Do you go for +SS and moderate damage? Slower, heavy hitter? There should be more than one viable gear option for players throughout the levels. And content should support the use of alternate gear sets so that it all seems to have a use.
