And you're at the question where you're asked what motivates your character...

You get four choices: Power, Glory, Riches, or Secret.

Did you know that this question generates your starting ring reward from the following four choices?

(Power) Ring of Fortitude (Critical Hit Rating +1, 1 Def, 1 Mdef)
(Glory) Ring of Fidelity (Vitality +1, 1 Def, 1 Mdef)
(Riches) Ring of Fortune (CP +5, 1 Def, 1 Mdef)
(Secret) Ring of Freedom (Determination +1, 1 Def, 1 Mdef)

Do you pick the Best ring, or do you pick the one you will likely start with when the game goes live?

Nice info, thanks!
I'll have to RP this one and choose Secret > Determination +1.
So then I'm asking myself, what does Determination do?

Found that info here:

Quote:
ARR Primary Stats
Strength (STR) – Melee Physical Damage.
Dexterity (DEX) – Ranged Physical damage. (Only seems to affect archer)
Vitality (VIT) – HP Pool. (THIS DOES NOT INCREASE MARAUDER DAMAGE IN ARR!)
Intelligence (INT) – Attack Magic Potency.
Mind (MND) - Healing Magic Potency.
Piety (PIE) – MP Pool

In FFXIV ARR, stat points are (as we observed) granted at level 10 (3 points) and every even level after that. (12,14,16,18). If we get 3 points every tenth level, up to 50 that’s a total of 31 stats points that you can put in. NOTE that since we have not personally levelled a non-legacy character to 50 in beta phase 3, these numbers could possibly be HIGHER or LOWER.

You also seem to gain 1 point in all stats every level.

Still, the main source of stat points will be gear. Most of the fine-tuning and customization will come from materia (and of course stat points you gain for allocation getting to 50)

Secondary Stats
Your primary stats have a direct effect on many of your secondary stats. I can see that some of these secondary stats can only be modified by gear or skills. For example, the Marauder skill Storms Eye reduces the targets resistance to slashing damage.

Offensive Properties
Accuracy – Your chance to successfully land attacks.
Critical Hit Rate - Your chance to critically hit.
Determination - Affects damage dealt by all attacks and HP recovered by spells.

Defensive Properties
Defense – Overall physical damage reduction. (Mainly gained through equipment)
Parry – Your chance to parry. Parrying reduces incoming damage by a certain percentage.
Magic Defense - Overall Magical damage reduction. (Mainly gained through equipment)

Physical Properties
Attack Power – Your overall physical damage capability.
Skill Speed – Reduces recast time of weapon skills.

Physical Resistances
Slashing - Resistance to slashing type damage. (Axes, swords?)
Piercing – Resistance to piercing damage. (Spears, arrows?)
Blunt – Resistance to blunt type damage. (Fists, Staves?)

Mental Properties
Attack Magic Potency - Your overall magic damage capability.
Healing Magic Potency – Your overall healing capability.
Spell Speed – Reduces cast time of magical skills.

Also worth noting: these rings can be traded, so if you wanted to have multiples of each, you could make alts, trade your desired ring(s) to a friend, then have your friend trade the ring(s) to your main character.

I always chose Power > To protect others. Didn't know it had any effect down the line. Is there anything special about the ring besides the stats? If not, it's just noob gear and will get replaced pretty quickly.

My plan is to get two of the Fortune rings, as the next tier of rings for crafting grant 6 CP at lvl 18. So that's a tremendous amount of usage.

CP is crafting points, it's basically MP for crafters. It's used primarily to boost the quality of an item (or restore durability) which is essential to producing a high-quality result.

And to expand on this, you can get other pieces that also increase your max CP, to the point where at ~level 11 I was two CP short of using another +quality skill per synth.

So having a ring with an extra 5 cp on it will go a long way towards helping your early crafting endeavors.

Secret as it has the most general use for me.

Personally, I found the +cp ring to be the most useful for the longest period. I quickly upgraded my combat rings, and I also play more doh than combat classes. Also, I found the 5 points toward hq to be of more value than any of the attributes from the combat rings. That's just personal opinion though, and I can easily see how someone might think otherwise.

That's hilarious. I unconsciously picked the tradeskill ring, being the tradeskill junkie that I am.

Huh; I did not know that. On all of my test characters, I just chose "..." 'cause the rest sounded very "unheroic"? Seems like I lucked out a bit, then.

The "best" ring seems kind of a mute point early on, as I can't see the stats doing too much for you (even if you manage to get two), but it takes up a slot with no real effort, so...hey, why not?

Thank you for the info...

Thank you for the post. Now that I know how it works, I'll definitely be picking the crafting ring as well. Smiley: smile
