Feeling overwhelmed, where's a good place to learn 2.0?Follow

I haven't played FF14 since a few months after it came out, but am highly interested in trying it out again when the game relaunches. It seems to be a drastically different game, which is great, but I find all the change pretty overwhelming and would like to read up on it. Where's the best source of information to read up on everything that is happening? I can gather bits and pieces from reading posts here but still feel like there's a lot of gaps. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I would suggest heading over to the lodestone and reading through all the producer letters. There's nearly 50 of them. There are also live letters that were translated to English. If you read through all that you should be caught up. Once you start playing there's an excellent in game tutorial system that will get you up to speed.

Welcome back!

Is there going to be a server that only allows new characters? My account wasn't very progressed and I'm not really looking forward to being on a server with a lot of already high level players.

You'll have to roll a new character if you want to get on the servers.

But it should be fairly easy to find a fresh servers. All the servers that currently contain 1.0 characters are marked clearly with the term "Legacy" and are all named after weapons.

All the fresh servers are named after monsters/primals/etc.

Speaking of Legacy, I read something that if an older player paid for 90 days of gameplay previously, that they would be eligible for early access. I'll be honest and say that I can't remember how much time I paid for, considering the game was free for a good portion of the time I played while it was struggling. Is there any way I can figure out now whether my account will have early access or not?

The period to qualify for Legacy started well after they initiated the year free and about the time they resumed payment on the game. So, given the information you've given me, I doubt that you're eligible.

That said, you can always log onto your account settings in Square Enix accounts and see if you have it there. I'm not sure where it is specifically, however.

You'll also see the Legacy Status when you log into the game on the character creation/select screen.

A good reference point: If you were there for 3 months after they introduced Jobs, and never stopped paying during that time, you likely have Legacy.

I see, that sucks =/ Is there any info how much earlier the early access people will get to play yet? I might just buy another copy of the game to get early access and give my old 1.0 account to a friend if that's the case. Thanks for all the replies by the way, very helpful.

I'd recommend bookmarking the following:

Until ZAM updates, those links will be a big help. XIVDB supplies all the skill and armor information you'll need to know. Some of the stuff is a bit wonky, but that shouldn't be an issue once the game releases. The Shared Skills Table will give you an idea of what skills various classes and jobs can share. It does lack ACN, SCH, and SMN, but hopefully the creator updates it around the start of phase 4. The last link has a couple guides I found useful. In particular, this guide on dying equipment saved me from a lot of frustration.

This has two posts (the first two) to links to the game maps. It will give you a general feel of how the game layout has been redesigned (and even has where all the chests -- optional or not -- are in a dungeon, harvesting points, FATEs, etc.).

http://eorzeareborn.com/a-materia-overview/

Is a good guide for materia and one that *finally* explained what double/triple melding with materia was (I thought for the longest it was just trying to put 2-3 materia into a single slot because that's how it sounded to me). It also has some good start info for classes, a decent macro list (and shows me that the ability for mouse-over cures is actually already in the game), and other things.

http://www.dualshockers.com/2012/11/14/final-fantasy-xiv-the-story-so-far-episode-1-beginnings/

Both of those are summations of the story pre-2.0. Fairly interesting videos but very long.

And I have to give a shout-out to http://arrstatus.com/ for just designing a very cool looking site (with a good function).

MrHappy has a bunch of 101 videos to kindof show you the ropes and answer questions. I suggest giving them a look through.

OP: It sounds like you might have done this already, but LebargeX also has a sticky with a lot of info right at the top of this very forum.

Also "Yogscast Kim" (just search in YouTube) has been allowed to do a video beta review, which shows a few hours into beta.

XIVDB.com and MyHappy's videos are both pretty solid places to get info. With both there probably won't be very much info that you'll be missing out on.

From what I've seen, Kim's videos weren't that great. The couple videos that I saw were just of her talking about an aspect of the game while she did it for the first time. Her crafting video was atrocious compared to pretty much every screenshot video on the subject. I understand that Yogscast is all about the blind let's plays, but if you are going to make a video about a specific subject in a game, you should at least go over, research, and practice what you are doing before slapping the word "Guide" on it. I still don't fully understand why they were the only ones to get the OK to post video after how they felt about 1.0. Hell, they didn't even think it was worth their time or "brand" to play the game themselves.

Oh well, I suppose any info is good info when you aren't up to date, plus the inclusion of video might be useful.

To be honest. this time around you should have no problem just jumping right in. They've done an impeccable job of easing you into the game mechanics and systems this time around. With that said, as mentioned above, I'd highly recommend MrHappy's 101 videos.

I didn't have a problem with Yogscast Kim's video series. I don't think they were meant to be a guide, just a bunch of let's play videos of beta. I think they are there for the clueless newcomer to ffxiv or possibly MMOs in general, and as such I think they got a ton of potention subscribers that otherwise might not have had the game on their radar.

Yogscast is huge, so that's probably why they were the only ones allowed to do video. Mrhappys videos are great for learning all aspects of the game starting out though.

Oh thanks. I especially needed the chocobo quest. Never got to do it during beta.

I hope LebargeX see this thread. There are a ton of great links here that would go well in the Sticky.

The three dungeon guides are very well written!

I agree that Yogscast Kim's videos were very... Amateur. We watched all of them but we didn't find out about them until we had been watching all of Mr. Happy's videos. Mr. Happy puts on a very professional front, he is informative and does his research. Every so often he misses a couple things that I personally learned during my beta experience but that is more bonus info than super strategic must know pieces.

My husband and I were trying very hard not to slap ourselves during Kim's videos. They eventually got slightly better, but she did little to no prep and has much of the terminology incorrect which she eventually corrects in the later videos. ( Ex. she starts by not being able to see the tattoo and face paint menus in Character Creator when she wanted to get rid of the paint that was part of the default face she selected, was calling the cities "worlds", had no clue how to use the maps or the quest completion indicators, and got herself lost by leaving the zone that she was in that had the completing npc).

Kim allows a good visual of running around that screenshots can't supply. However, she really should have done a dry run and figured everything out so it was comprehensive. I feel it was a wasteful use of such an awesome privilege.

Needless to say if you are just hearing about FFXIV and looking for info. Go to Mr. Happy FIRST. Then, if you want to see video of the beta gameplay watch Yogscast's Kim, that way you don't get confused and misinformed. Lastly, just try not to slap yourself watching Kim, some of her goofs really are terrible. We watched it mainly to sate some of our withdrawal while we wait for Open Beta to start.

Here is a ZAM sticky. Targeting Guide for both pc and ps3. It is awesome and worth looking through. I changed my playing style, because my wrist was so painful I almost stopped playing. Changing some of the settings did the trick. Enjoy!

Yeah, I'm totally negative nancy today... Smiley: laugh

Do I simply play far too many HacknSlash combo games? What is this controller fatigue everyone keeps talking about? Or is this some keyboard to controller thing I'm missing out on?
