Like many of you, I was a long time FFXI player, and felt that my time in that game was truly magical. When I felt it was time for me to move on from FFXI to see what other types of games had to offer, my search ended in continual disappointment. I moved on to WoW for awhile, then played LotR, Rift, Guild Wars II and a host of other MMO's not worth naming. Each game just seemed to be missing that allure that drew me in hook, line,and sinker to FFXI.
I know it's early, and I may only be a budding level 9 Arcanist, but this game is incredible. The detail in world of Eorzea is simply stunning. It's a pleasure to move about from place to place and just survey the landscape. The control and movements have the type of ease and fluidity one comes to expect from a AAA game. The cut-scenes, story line quests, and general structure of progression in the game have all been planned and executed extremely well. For the first time in a long time, I don't feel like rushing through content just to level up. I find myself so immersed in the world of Eorzea, that I simply have forgotten about the typical MMO rat race, which is akin to how I felt when I first joined FFXI and was unaware that such a rat race existed.
For me the ultimate difference between FFXIV and the host of other MMO's that failed to secure my allegiance is quite simple, Eorzea is a place I want to be. An environment that I continue to think about each time I log out.
It's incredibly early to truly judge, so I am going to stop here. All I can say is that it's been an incredibly long time since I felt that a video game environment was alive. Eorzea has captured me. I hope you all are having a positive experience with the game as well.

It is a very cool world they have created, I just hope they get some of these bugs squared away. It's killing it for a lot of us.

I feel the same way. I said here on ZAM about a week ago, that FFXI has left a hole in me that no other MMO has been able to fill. I wont say that FFXIV fills that hole, I'd more-so say that it just picks up where FFXI left off. The story already seems very interesting, and SE did an amazing job, once again, of making you feel like you play such a major role in the story of the game.
The enemies, the landscape, the atmosphere, the races. All of it comes together to make an experience that will definitely be as close as I'll ever get to enjoying a game like I did FFXI. I'm ready to experience a game that I'll look back on in 5 years and get the feeling that I get when I think back on FFXI today.

Does sound a bit off when you put emphasis on that part of my post. Lol.
XIV does have a certain charm, but in many ways it's different than XI, so perhaps a different charm entirely. The hardships in XI to earn or achieve anything were kind of a badge of honor. The level progression in XIV is far more streamlined and guided, so that badge of honor is gone. I like this game a lot, but I don't know if it'll be because it reminds me of XI in any way.

I'm loving the game so far. I loved FFXI as well. You will not find a MMO that gives you the same feeling that FFXI did. It was a different world. I think once alot of people are able to play without constantly making comparisons, they will take it for what it is. I know better than to compare the two...if I did I'd end up as jaded as some of the other people on these forums. Some of it comes from being afraid of change. Some of it is due to the poor reaction to 1.0. Either way, the game is beautiful if given the chance to shine in it's own light.

There's a few patches and they're kind of ugly now, but man oh man do they feel good when I slip into them, better than anything else I have in my wardrobe. Putting on my pair of XI jeans is like nothing else, because I haven't worn anything out the same way.
ARR is a brand new pair of jeans, by the same brand name, but in a different style. They fit well, and maybe in ten years they'll be like my XI jeans, but they're still new and crisp and all darkly denomed. None of the pre-washed ****. No patches yet, no stains, no rips and tears. FFXI was so big, and everything was so dangerous. XIV seems pretty vast, but perhaps not as empty as XI? Or maybe it is the much faster travel that makes XIV not seem as big. It is certainly not as dangerous as XI, at least not yet. I kind of miss that; when I saw a Bogy my heart skipped a beat, until I noticed it didn't want to aggro me and I then proceeded to beat it down. I think I understand the change, though. It makes the game open up to a much broader audience, and we get a chance to fight every monster in each of the zones. XI always had those "off limits" kind of mobs that you just knew to avoid unless you were exping (on the easier ones).
XIV has its own allure, and I feel a much smoother sense of progression than I ever did in XI. I consider myself already hooked.

I agree completely, I am level 19 and not once have I thought "hmm, what do I do now?". There has not been a single dull moment so far. I also really love the Duty Finder. Sure as hell beats shouting in Jeuno for three hours trying to put a party together for a mission...
