1. How much do they cost?
2. Do they start out with max spaces available or do they have to be upgraded?

Each retainer has 175 inventory slots. The retainer I picked up in P4 was free.

I gave my retainer the "serious" personality, so now he always seems pissed off at me when I call or dismiss him. I have this vague notion that he's muttering under his breath as he walks off to put my garbage on the AH.

You got them free if you was on Legacy Servers. Though was that your retainers you had previously in 1.0? If so, does anyone remember if we had to pay for retainers in 1.0?

You get 2 free slaves with 175 slots each and they come with 20 AH slots per retainer.

Yea, the "lore" for retainers in 2.0 is that they're a a benefit of joining a group I won't mention the name of to avoid spoiling anything. It's kind of like "You're doing us a favor so we're going to make your life more convenient."

Sadly, they didn't even acknowledge my request for an invisible jet.

Can you decide which race and appearance?

Yes, you actually run through the character creator and fashion them out the the aether.

You'd think they'd be more grateful.

This is one of the things I'd been wondering as well, as last I'd seen (probably a version 1.0 web site), they were all pre-made and pre-named. Glad to know I can customize my retainer a little bit.

Question, though: can you name them anything as well, or is there a list you select a name from?

I think they already have a name but you can give them a nickname.

I see...I've got no problem with that. Thank you for the replies.

Now, to find a nickname...

Oh and it has to be unique. Meaning it can't be a name that someone else is using.

Oh dear god all my retainers are going to be themed around my own character name.

Miao Yin
Jack Burton
Wang Chi

Makes sense, if they're going to be acting as your Auction House representative. Thanks again...

Wow, I didn't even think of that.. maybe it's because I picked a name I can almost never get and got it.. Makes sense though since it has to identify the origin of a sale.

One odd thing though, what good does knowing a retainer's name do anyone? There's no obligation to reference the original player with that name, so really you have no idea who you're buying things from.
