Difference between class, subclass, cross class? job?Follow

Hey all

I'm kind of confused.

So I know that my pug can eventually become a monk and that it can use my conjurer's "cure" spell. But I also know that it can't use some other class skills that are specific to that class. So..what are these "sub-classes" which also have supporting spells for the main monk class? Is my pug the sub class? But ...there are 2 subclasses that can become a monk?

uhhh. Sorry if I'm not making sense. Do you get what I'm saying?

Classes are the basic roles you begin the game as such as pug or cnj. These classes can transform into advanced jobs once you level it to 30 and have the unlock requirement class leveled to 15. To get bard for example you would need archer to 30 and conjurer 15. Some abilities that are used by the basic classes can be utilized "cross class". A bard again for example would be able to use cure, a spell learned from a conjurer. When playing as a basic class there are a ton of cross class abilities that can be used, when playing as an advanced job you are restricted. This chart https://docs.google.com/a/students.mclennan.edu/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AsPI9Wq6z6GwdHJEYmR0Qjk4QzV2SmYzVzhYTVdCSkE&toomany=true is extremely helpful imho when looking into cross class abilities and what is necessary to be the best you can be. To have all abilities available to a warrior for example you would need mrd/war leveled to 50, gld 34, and pug 42.

ok i'll start off from the beginning.

you start with your normal "classes" of which there are 8.

unlocking a job for each class will require you to also have the other one or two other classes associated with that job lveled up to a certain point.

Once you unlock a job, it can be equipped at anytime in the menu.

classes can use certain skills from all classes, whereas jobs can only use skills from the one or two classes you needed to level up in order to unlock the job.

the advantage of a job however, is that only jobs will receive certain job specific abilities not available to classes that augments your job. For example, a paladin will receive additional skills that will allow them to tank better.

did this answer your question?

Not sure if i'm the best person to answer this since i haven't got my first job yet, however as I understand it, it works like this. Subclass is the class you need to have to 15 to get your job, for Pugilist to be Monk it has to be level 30 and with the changes it needs Lancer at 15 now, making Lancer the subclass. Cross class abilities are simply the abilities that classes use that can be used by other classes, like cure is a cross class ability. Job is just the advanced class but is restricted to certain cross class abilities.

Class: stuff you can play beginning at level 1 by joining the corresponding guild.

Job: a specialist "mode" for playing a Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic class. A job does not have a level of its own, but instead is tied to the level of its base class.

Cross class: when you access the ability from one class when playing another class or job.

Subclass: I don't know if there's a firm definition for this. I don't know if it's even a technical term from within the game itself. Each job can get cross class abilities from 2 classes, not counting its base class (since a job is actually an extension of its base class, it wouldn't be cross class to access the abilities of the base class anyway). So "subclass" may refer to those two classes that you can cross class abilities from, or it could refer to just the one class that needs to be leveled to 15 in order to unlock the job.

So..let me see if I get this..

To become a monk, I have to level pug to 30 and my lancer to 15. Both the pug and the lancer are subclasses of the monk.

Once I become a monk, I can no longer use "cure" from conjurer because conjurer is not a subclass of the Monk.

The only skills I have available as a Monk are the skills of that of a pug and lancer.

So, classes have more flexibility up to 30, probably as a way to try everything out, sort of? And then the advanced job is the specialty which makes the job itself stand out amongst all the other jobs.

Yes?

Pugilist is not really the sub class of Monk it is Monk, the levels are linked. Lancer is the sub class needed for the job and you can use its cross class abiliteis with Monk as well as Marauders cross class abilities. That chart may help.

I would call Pugilist the base class for Monk rather than a subclass.

The table is confusing, haha. I'm sure it's supposed to be extremely clear and organized, but I'm not connecting the dots.

So, let's say that the pug is the base class for the monk and once the pug becomes 30, the monk and the pug are both 30?

The lancer is a subclass for the monk and the lancer needs to be lvl15 and pug lvl30 in order for the pug to become a monk? Is marauder also a subclass of the monk? Does the MAR and LNC have to be 15 and the PUG 30 in order for the pug to become a monk?

No you just need a 30 Pug and a 15 lancer to get the quest for Monk. Whatever your level is for Pug is your Monk level and vica versa. Monk is restricted to using the cross class abilities of Lancer and Marauder, whereas Pugilist can use more cross class abilities.

I really think you'd be better off just throwing out the term subclass since there is no clearly defined definition of it.

Each job shares its level with the base class that it evolves from. If you level pug to 30 and unlock monk they will always be the same level. If you go from 30-32 as a pug the next time you equip your monk crystal your monk will be 32 as well.

Instead of thinking of subclasses just i just use the terms unlock requirement and cross class.

To become a bard you must also level cnj to 15. Cnj is a unlock requirement for bard.

To become a badass bard you must level cnj and lnc to gain some of their abilities to use cross class.

I think I got it now. Thanks!

Yeah, so since Monk has 2 subclasses (im still using this term) - marauder and lancer - it would make sense to figure out which skills i want and to level accordingly.

And I guess there would be situations when I would want a, say, lvl35 pug instead of a lvl35 monk based on different skills I'd want to use and so forth... but I would probly want the specialized.

Do I finally get it?

That sounds about right. You don't have to level Marauder at all to play MNK. But if there are any Marauder abilities that you want to cross class, it would be to your benefit to level Marauder so that you have access to those abilities. Similarly, level 15 is the bare minimum that you need to level Lancer, but you may want to level it higher if there are specific Lancer abilities that you want to cross class.

Yeah - specific example is Invigorate & Blood for Blood (both from LNC). Invigorate is a 22 LNC ability to restore a chunk of TP, Blood for Blood is a 34 LNC ability that boosts damage dealt & damage received. Your LNC must be 15 to unlock the quest that grants the Monk job crystal, but you'll eventually want to take LNC past 15, to get these 2 awesome abilities, that you can use on your Monk. So:

Base Class: Pugilist
Job: Monk. Requires 30 PGL & 15 LNC to unlock quest, that grants a Monk job crystal. Equip this crystal while a PGL to change into MNK.
These are linked in level - 30 PGL = 30MNK, 36 PGL = 36 MNK etc.
"Subclasses": Marauder & Lancer (Yes, not an "official" term, just one that has been adapted from XI)
Cross-Class (PGL): Any ability from any class that has PGL in the required class/job list, at the bottom of the ability tooltip. You get 10 slots for these @ 50.
Cross-Class (MNK): Same as above in definition, but the only classes that will have MNK in the required class/job list are LNC & MRD. You get 5 slots for these @ 50, along with 5 MNK-specific abilities.
