I checked my retainers and my own inventory and there is no item or anything and I don't have the ability to summon it anymore.
Can anyone help? Also, do I need to do all the noob quests before I am allowed to ride again/get leves etc?

Thanks, is that the NPC's name, or? Are they found somewhere in particular?
If you were riding a chocobo in 1.0 you should just have to use the mount item and then use the ability it gives you.
I think you unlock leves through the very early story quests.

I don't recall if thats the name. In LL, its buy the linkshell/mail box icon on the map in the upper level.
