I will reface this post by saying, if I happen to make myself sound like a big fat noob, well...it's because I am. I did play FFXI casually for a good while, but am still adjusting to the changes to XIV.

I remember reading (...I think) that the first player to attack a mob gets 100% of xp and items regardless if someone else joins in, correct? Any player who jumps in on a battle may be rewarded if he or she helps out enough. If I am understanding everything correctly, it would seem that this system is set up to make on-the-fly "parties" while doing the plethora of "kill these monsters and collect these things from them" quests, where anyone can jump in on a fight. Yet, every time I run into other players during these quests they always attack separate mobs. There have been times when 2/3 people have been standing around waiting for more punching bags to pop up; but wouldn't it be more efficient to work together and all receive a copy the item from each mob instead of splitting the group and waiting for pops? I like to help out people randomly so I guess I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being rude or "stealing" any conditions for the various quests. Thoughts?

This system is in place to make it easier for people to fulfill their objectives rather than having 100 people compete for the same mobs making it a daunting task to progress.

People do lime to be left alone at times and want to do things on their own. This system makes that difficult, but the person who gets claim does get the drops.

What i do, is i wait until a mob gets claimed and then i start fighting the mob too. That way he gets his drops he may want, and we both get credit for the kill. If someone asks me to stop fihting their mobs i will, unless i need it for a quest. Theres not enough mobs to go around sometimes so people shod be more understanding. If i dont need the mob and they dont want help, then yes, ill leave.

I think as people come to understand the system this is what more people will do. Because some people are farming, if you are just killing the mob for quests/log then let another hit first and help them finish it off. It actually can help both of you chain exp and finish the quest faster.
