Archer has a damage +20% ability at level 4 or so. Easily obtained. Works for physical and magic alike.

Lancer gets Feint at Level 2 as well. Which inflicts a nice slow on your target. Should help you survive a little longer.

You could probably borrow Thunder from Thaumaturge at level 6?

Best way to level is still just to party up for FATEs really. But you'll get there.

Personally, I've got Raging Strikes (dmg) from ARC, Internal Release (crit) from PGL, Foresight (def) from MRD, Convalescence (heal) from GLA as my 'buffs'. I think one other defense type of buff, but since I can't log in, I couldn't tell ya. I think it's Featherfoot from PGL for evasion. Thunder really is a good addition if you're in a fight that's single-target and is going to take a minute or two to complete, otherwise it's not worth casting. I'm still working on ACN, so i've yet to really use anything from it as yet, though i'm sure there will be something I can pick up.

Stone 1 imo does much more damage than Thunder 1 (after leveling THM to 50 and then trying to solo CNJ 1-15). I use the archer buff.

Swiftcast from Thaumaturge is a must.

Convalescence from Gladiator is very good.

Can you actually equip a gladiator skill as a white mage?

Stone 1 does 140 potency in damage. Stone 2 170, Thunder is 30 plus 35 per tick every 3 seconds for 18 seconds. A Thunder that ticks 4 times (lasts 12 seconds) does 30 + 4 * 35 = 150 potency, making it better damage-per-cast-time than Stone 1. Thunder has to tick 5 times to be better DPCT than Stone 2.

The math for Aero 1 is similar: 4 ticks to beat Stone 1, 5 ticks to beat Stone 2.

As CNJ, but not WHM. White Mage cross-classes are THM and ACN.
