I was playing EQ2 this evening and had an epiphany. I realized that it was not the steady, boring , repetitious pounding of keys in the standard attack progression that makes MMOs enjoyable, it is the moments when something goes wrong. The pulls when the 3 extra mobs you did not see come when you pull your single, safe target. It is the moment the roaming Heroic mob on that really long path walks into the middle of the fight you JUST started. These are the moments that make the adrenaline flow, the heart pound, and truly give life to all those programmed pixels flowing around on your screen.
What does not kill you... makes you wanna play for HOURS.
