Requirements to Win

The red mage Maat fight is considered one of the most difficult of the game. You must battle Maat until his HP drops to 25 percent of his total health, at which point he gives up.

Most red mages beat Maat using strategies based on binding, sleeping and nuking him. However, the red mage Maat fight can also be won melee-style.

Disposable Items to Bring

If your using a casting-based strategy, focus on bringing medications that give you lots of mp quickly. These items include:

Equipment Recommendation

If using a casting-based strategy, your success in battle will hinge on your ability to sleep and/or bind Maat. Therefore, every ounce of INT, magic accuracy and enfeebling skill you can muster is priceless.

Consider these items as must-haves:

Casting-Based Strategy

The initial portion of all casting-based strategies are the same. Immediately run to Maat and sleep him, then dispell him until either he has no buffs or you see his "shell" is gone. Then buff yourself with shell, protect, blink and stoneskin, and rest or medicate yourself to full MP.

From this point, different casting-based strategies call for different actions:

Sleep-Nuke Strategy

Summary: The purpose of this strategy is to nuke Maat with your strongest spell (Aero III if you're level 69), then immediately sleep him. Repeat this until Maat surrenders. During the fight, keep yourself buffed with blink and stoneskin. Bind can be used in case sleep doesn't stick. Chainspell can be used in emergencies.

This strategy works because: If done properly -- and if sleep and/or bind stick -- then Maat will never get close enough to use his most devastating move, Asuran Fists. Also, if Maat uses chainspell, chances are he won't be awake long enough to do much damage; or, if he is bound, you can simply run out of his casting range.

This strategy doesn't work because: Regardless of how much INT or enfeebling skill you have, Maat is very resistant to enfeebling magic and there's a good chance some of your sleep/binds will fail. Winning with this strategy is nearly impossible if too many of your spells are resisted.

Chainspell-heavy Strategy

Summary: The goal of this strategy is to defeat Maat within the duration of using chainspell. To accomplish this, you must quickly fire off roughly seven or eight nukes to do enough damage for Maat to surrender.

As soon as you've recovered your MP after debuffing Matt -- and after you've buffed yourself -- use chainspell and begin nuking Maat with your strongest spell (usually Aero III). When you're getting low on MP, sleep Maat, then convert, recast your buffs (if needed) and cure yourself (or use a strong medication to recover your HP). Quickly back up to put some distance between you and Maat, then immediately resume nuking with your strongest nuke. If done correctly, Maat will surrender before chainspell expires.

Note: If you're an Elvaan or Galka and MP is an issue, sleep Maat after a few nukes after you've converted. Pop a couple of ethers or a vile elixer, recast buffs, back up and fire off another nuke or two for the win.

Why this strategy works: This battle plan works because the strategy relies less on sleeps and binds, which Maat often resists regardless of your gear. Even if sleep is resisted, with chainspell active you can instantly recast sleep until it sticks. Also, with chainspell active, you do so much damage so fast that Maat doesn't have much of a chance to hurt you.

Why this strategy doesn't work: If done correctly, this strategy is almost completely fail-safe. The only problem might be MP for Elvaan and Galka red mages, but as stated above, that can be remedied.
