Auto-Sort and Auto-StackFollow

#1 Sep 15 2010 at 10:42 AM Rating: Decent
Could someone who has been playing since before NA release or right at NA release shed some light on something for me?

Auto-Stack was recently added (1.5 to 2 years ago) where a received item would be placed on the stack of other like items.

Auto-Sort (available from the inventories sub-menu) stacks all items, then sorts them placing crystals on top, gear by slot, and consumables/crafting items.

The question is, when was the auto-sort added? Has it always been there? added before NA release or after NA release?

It's been around at the very least since US beta, remember having it even then.

June of 2008 automatic inventory sorting was added.

Patch notes.

I don't remember it sorting your various items (not stacking, just sorting) until that patch, but then I might have had it turned off, too.

It did it for some items way before then. (and by some like maybe 2 types?) I know Imperial Currency auto sorted/stacked well before 2008.

Correct, this was what I refereed to as auto-stacking. Before it was added items were just added to the bottom of your inventory making you go to your inventory and use the sort button every few fights. This is the mechanic I'm talking about, that sort button. How long has it been around. (what I refereed to as auto-sort, its name is kind of miss-leading since it doesn't actually happen automatically just when you press the button)

And some of the fireworks from the event moogles - it threw me for a loop when it happened before auto-stack was implemented.

Of course, even now, Windower's auto-sort does it better.

LL doesn't autosort, it autostacks. Big difference. Autostack doesn't require you to search through your inventory for something that you just put into it.

Auto-stacking is not really an appropriate name for the feature, because it does more than just automatically add stackable items together. It literally applies the "Auto" type sort every time an item enters your inventory. It's an Auto-auto-sort lol...

Anyway, the "Auto" sort type has existed since at least the NA PS2 release. I started playing about a month before that, which was I think about 3 months after NA PC release. I cannot remember the feature ever not being there.

The auto/manual sort buttons have been there ever since I started playing, which wasn't too long after NA release.

On a semi-related note, the auto/manual sort buttons for your magic list is a little more cleverly hidden. You have to actually press Ctrl+M (to bring up a list of every single spell your character knows among all its jobs) in order to do any sorting around on your magic. Bringing up a magic list any other way only brings up a truncated list of what magic your current job(s) have, or only magic of one type (white magic, black magic, etc.) and doesn't let you execute any sorts.

The logic behind the placement of spells when it auto-sorts is even more cleverly hidden.

Really? On the PS2 you can get there from the menu>magic>magic type things, no need to hit CTRL+M.

I'm not entirely sure I know what you mean here, but I will check it when I can actually log on. I am pretty sure that Ctrl+M is the only way to bring up and sort an entire list of EVERY spell your character has, though.

I only recommend using the magic auto sort once, just to get each spell grouped with the type of magic it belongs to. After that, you can manually tweak each group as you see fit.

Most players just say "fk that" and macro everything. I happen to be used to using the spell list though, and since I've actually placed every spell where I want it to be, I know where everything is.

I have a whole crapton of spells that I've manually reordered. I've come close to accidentally hitting the auto sort again on several occasions, and if I ever did this it'd probably take me at least 20-30 minutes to repair everything. @_@

It doesn't save until you log out, so force dcing will reset it.

Good to know!

While I'm at it, what's the method to save changes to (in-game) macros without logging out? Changing the palette? The book?

Well, the menu brings up types of magic (white, black, blue, nin, etc) and then you can sort or auto from there. Why would I want to sort a list of EVERY spell I have, rather then by the ones available per job?

Just the palette will do.

Because every mage job can use more than just one type of spell (subjobs)...

hmm..I must have gotten used to going through the list by type.

Does the ctrl+m sort so that types of magic are mixed? I don't want to try it and have to relearn where everything is over again without knowing first.

ETA: is

No, it sorts everything the same as it would if you sort by type, except it sorts them all at once, and allows you to manually move a spell away from others of it's type. I've got utsu at the very top of my spell list, but all the rest of the ninjutsu where autosort put it for example.

That could come in handy. May have to try it.

If I remember correctly though, next time you change either your main or sub, such that you lose one of the two magic types, the inter-type grouping is lost. I know this is true for job abilities.

For example, if you are WHM/NIN and move Utsu:Ni up toward the top of your white magic list, then change to WHM/SCH and back to WHM/NIN, Utsu:Ni will shuffle down in with the rest of the ninjutsu instead of staying up with your white magic.

wat

No it doesn't. I've had my spells sorted the way they are now since 2004.

Wow, then they need to do some source code copy pasta and get that implemented on job abilities, too! It drives me nuts that every time I swap onto WHM/SCH, I have to manually shift Sublimation up into the rest of my WHM abilities. I access Divine Caress, Sublimation, Benediction, Martyr, and Devotion all from the menu so I like them grouped together with Sublimation right in the middle.
