I had my first RP run in yesterday. I was synthing away in the ARM guild and these two players just kept blabbing on about something filling up my log, I couldn't avoid it.

It was driving me nuts because it was such a boring conversation. It dragged on until one of them said "well, I'd best get back to training." to which I could not keep quiet any longer replied, "YES, MORE HAMMERING LESS YAMMERING." Lame, to be sure, but he broke character and said "QQ."

QQ indeed.

I just have to say that this one of the few posts that made me laught irl while at work, I just couldn't stop myself.

I think this was actually a very IC reply from yourself and wouldn't think of it as rude.

I dont mind other ppl RPing. In the other hand, I, personally, dont like to RP.
Maybe if I knew beforehand it was the unoficial RP server, I would make my toon somewhere else. But to be quite honest, I dont really care. If ppl want to stay in character, they are free to do so.
I just wonder why ppl chosed the most populated server to make it the RP server. It will bring a lot of new gamers not knowing it (like me!).

Besaid was chosen as the unofficial RP server LONG before it became the most populated.

Also, Final Fantasy players prefer the word "character" over the word "toon", as "toon" is generally used to refer to WoW characters. We're strange like that.

I avoid Besaid because it was voted as the unofficial RP server. Why? I am sick and tired, from WoW mainly, of others making fun of those that RP. To avoid that kind of community since that is the reason I left WoW, I avoided the server.

I am now seeing that the most active english speaking community is on this server and I may remake a character to see how it is. I have been on 3 different servers only to be left alone with no one to party or a good active LS.

Don't worry mate, there are usually many nice people running leve groups often. I tend to be on around 2pm - 9pm CST on many classes if you need a hand with leve's as well.

Working on my 10 Gladiator, with a bit of Thaumaturge mixed in currently.

I'm new to the game altogether and chose Besaid for the rep of the unofficial RP server. I'll agree that generally I find for more comraderie and politeness from RP communities.. although, we do have our fair share of jerks. Unfortunately, no matter where you go in life or what you get involved into, there's no stark seperation of groups that help you avoid the overly opinionated and those that view thier opinions as fact.

@Bertlit: You left WoW to avoid the RP community? I played WoW for about 2-3 years and bounced server to server. I only found RP to be somewhat embraced on one server (Farstriders). All others I visited, you had people publicly badmouthing RPers on broadcast... tho Moonguard... I perfectly understand why with the way a large percentage there acted. But even on Farstriders, the unofficial 'best' RP server in WoW, most RP was in teams or in out of the way places because of people jumping into the middle of the rp to dance naked or something. Then again, haven't played WoW for awhile now. Has Cataclysm brought the sleepy RP comunities back to life?

@BaseVilliN: I agree on that your comment could be taken IC and while you didn't mean it to be rude, I'm on both your side and that person's because it may have felt rude to that person because you typed it in all caps. I'm assuming this because of how you typed in post. Most people consider text in all caps to be shouting, which in most cultures and situations is considered to be rude. Most people, if they ever accidentally leave the caps lock on or hit it by mistake, you'll see them quickly apologize for the caps. Japanese players definitely see it as rude, and there's japanese players that are able to type english very well. This is why you'll occasionally see someone apologize in the translator if they happen to use the shout channel in game as well. But still, don't let it get to you, most of us don't bite :3

I did not leave WoW because of the way RP was treated. I left the RP type servers because I couldn't stand the way people treated those that RP in the open. If I tried to bash on those that pick on the RPers, then it just become a yelling fight between like 10 people and everyone leaves unhappy.

So I left an RP server to a normal where people do not openly RP so I can avoid that kind of bashing.

A group of us from my linkshell were doing some leves the other day and for the first time we saw another group RPing openly in /say.
We commented to ourselves in /party about how none of us were RPers and how some of us found it a little hard to understand the appeal, but we were courteous and did not interrupt of complain. We just battled our mobs and moved on.

That is how it should be done.

As an RPer myself, I'm grateful for that gesture.

Speaking from personal experience, the appeal is immersion. When I'm RPing, I don't think about work or rent or car payments. I'm thinking about helping my friends with whatever tasks they need help with, and how to best acquire gil for that new weapon or piece of armor I've had my eye on.

I'm late to this catagory so I'm playing catch up.....

....I would like RPers if they put some effort into it. Almost all of RP dialect is bland and uninteresting (save for a couple of "erotic" situations I "bumped" into) XD

I made a /pet emote, what have you guys done to contribute? >:O

I didn't join Besaid because of the RP, but I must admit that I like seeing the RPers around. It gives the game a little more atmosphere, I think. Plus, it's sometimes fun to jump in with a little RP myself.

Although there was the time that one of my linkshell mates decided to try and mug the RPers...it was quite amusing, and they were very nice about it. Although much to my frien'd chagrin, the RPer didn't have his wallet on him at the time.

I never see them around anymore D: I think there numbers shrank to the point that there are only a few secret cults doing their rituals in hidden temples that I've never seen before! :O

I often RP as a male stripper in Ul'Dah and it's a lot of fun, it's the best when we have a whole group to dance around random people :D

But what is RP really these days? You could make the argument that it's amateurs acting, but if you look at the history of RPGs, that seems to be more of a niche addition. I mean look at borderlands... it has RPG elements but I really don't see people trying to RP in it.

To me an RPG is a game with some sort of incremental character development system. I think the role in role playing has to do more about how and what you can do then the acting part.

Hit the nail on the head on that one. Gaming definition of RPG is where the main character (you) goes through a developmental change (in a combination of physical and mental) as the game progresses, in the form of some sort of story line.

RP is used by those that try to immerse themselves as much as they can within the game. I can't do that but I'd like those around me that act their part and not just some bozo clicker. It doesn't take that much effort at all. Hi, I'm Lyles! I'm an elf! I'm nice most of the time but sometimes I like to do mean and naughty things ^^

No effort at all XD
