The Associated Press wrote:
Succumbing to scandal, former Majority Leader Tom DeLay said Tuesday he is resigning from Congress in the face of a tough re-election race, closing out a career that blended unflinching conservatism with a bare-knuckled political style.

"The voters of the 22nd District of Texas deserve a campaign about the vital national issues that they care most about and that affect their lives every day, and not a campaign focused solely as a referendum on me," DeLay said in a statement.

DeLay reflected Republican concerns that the GOP could lose the seat in November, saying his love and loyalty to the party played a role in his decision and adding, "I refuse to allow liberal Democrats an opportunity to steal this seat with a negative, personal campaign."

President Bush said Tuesday that DeLay had informed him of his decision Monday afternoon.

"I wish him all the best," Bush told reporters during a brief White House session, adding, "It had to have been a very difficult decision for someone who loved representing his district in the state of Texas."
Story

I guess I can see the whole "I might not win because of all the allegations against me and then some dirty Liberal would get the seat" angle, but what's with the early resignation? Calling it quits some eight months before his term ends anyway? Hopes that a Republican will win the special election and have a foot in the door for November?

I think he's being a good Pubbie and doing what he can to lessen the impact of his own grand mal scandal on the elections. The fact that they're eight months away will help, since our collective political memory seems to extend just about to the next sound bite.

Out of curiousity, I went to see how the Texas District 22 primaries turned out and saw that DeLay had won the Republican slot with 62% of the vote (20,556 out of 33,160) but no Democratic returns. Was Lampson running unopposed so they never put him on the ballot? The total number of Democratic votes cast in the district would have been interesting.

There's 660,000 people in the district but no clue how many are registered voters. That number wouldn't mean much anyway since primary turn-outs are always shabby.

People who ignore the primaries do so at their own peril. My own district had three referendums related to property taxes on the primary election ballot. Even if you "Just don't care" who wins your local Representative race, most people care if they're going to pay an extra $150 a year in taxes. Or they should, anyway.

those liberal basterds, always trying to put the man down. its not "bribery" when a politician does it, its called "lobbying", unless, ofcoarse, its those pesky dems getting lobbying, then it is bribery again.

Actually, he rolled over on Bob Ney. Close enough I guess...

I was listening to an interview with DeLay just a while ago. The way he explained it was that when they did the redistricting, one of the districts that lost Republican voters was his. Presumably it was strongly Republican at the time, so they figured they could afford to lose some there if it could tip another close district. So, with the indictments and mudslinging that has and will inevitably continue, he figured that might end up being just enough to cost that seat. By dropping out 8 months ahead of time, he allows the party to have a high probability of retaining the seat. Makes sense I suppose. Personally, I would have fought through it, but I imagine he's got a better feel for the votors in Texas then I do.

Don't worry Gbaji, I'm sure the Democrat that punched the cop last week will resign her seat too and we'll be even.

They can keep each other company in the slammer.

As we prepare to bid farewell to Hammer Time, I read this story about government pork spending and am reminded of a certain Sept 14, 2005 tidbit about why the government can't pare back the budget to free up money to help Katrina victims:

Quote:
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said yesterday that Republicans have done so well in cutting spending that he declared an "ongoing victory," and said there is simply no fat left to cut in the federal budget.
Mr. DeLay was defending Republicans' choice to borrow money and add to this year's expected $331 billion deficit to pay for Hurricane Katrina relief. Some Republicans have said Congress should make cuts in other areas, but Mr. DeLay said that doesn't seem possible.
"My answer to those that want to offset the spending is sure, bring me the offsets, I'll be glad to do it. But nobody has been able to come up with any yet," the Texas Republican told reporters at his weekly briefing.
Asked if that meant the government was running at peak efficiency, Mr. DeLay said, "Yes, after 11 years of Republican majority we've pared it down pretty good."
