Ok, I think the idea of character transfers (besides perhaps reserving a name if you so choose) is dumb. The thrill of a new game is exploration and dying to a level 1 rabbit on your first day.
That said, what would you do differently starting from scratch?
Since we do not know anything about this game yet, its difficult to say what type of FFXI systems may stay in place, but for the sake of argument lets just assume you're 'transferring' to a new server with only level 1 players (ie not really a transfer).
Things I will do/try to do:
1. go to a server with as many friends as possible. I have 1 RL friend who plays this game, I'm sure we'll end up on the same server, if a couple of my closer friends from FFXI transfer I'd try to stick with them.
2. Not buy the brady guide.
3. I would probably try and max level faster - this means not wasting a ton of time on a job no one wants and getting +1 gear. (obviously this assumes we can change jobs at all).
4. Take up crafting sooner and stick with it.
Things I'd like to do but probably won't:
5. analyze the battle system (ie damage formulas) - I'll probably just be limited by playtime to do this.
