I really hope FFXIV includes flying just like WoW and Aion. What do you guys think? I meanif they want to make an MMO that will compete with other MMO's they need to include flying mounts.

Air battles with those tube-like-winged airships? (yes, Please!)

I don't really think flying mounts would really break or make an MMO.

FFXI has flying.

But really, I think if we're going to have some manually-controlled flight method, small airships like in the trailer are probably the way to go. How it would integrate into the gameplay in terms of accessing otherwise inaccessible areas and perhaps even flying combat isn't going to make or break the game for me, but it could certainly be fun. At least taking a look at Limsa Lominsa and the fighting on the boat in the trailer, I'd guess sea travel will be more emphasized than sky travel, though who knows at this point.

I would prefer to not have personal mounts, they aren't to useful to be honest. I had them in WoW and I only got one because I was forced to in the last Expansion lol

I posted my LS airship system that I devised here. This is because I'm against personal flying crafts, I think it'd just be weird seeing thousands of flying machines rather than a hundred.

I don't think we will need or they will do this. I think that's why they are using the Guild system so that we can just teleport where ever we need instead of actually traveling there on foot or by air. Tele ports make more sense and is alot more convenient anyway.

They're not useful at all...except to get between main travel hubs that much faster. That's not useful...nope. No way :P

Well if we can teleport between hubs, then they won't be that useful, except to potentially fly over areas. I guess I wouldn't be opposed to a flying device that just lets you fly around and scope out the area, though I think allowing them to land pretty much anywhere presents a lot of gameplay complications in addition to the initial technical complications of free flying.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I don't like manually controlled flight in a MMORPG. Makes things feel a bit clunky, and takes some of the mystery and mystique out of things. I sure don't want a system like Aion has, I've watched a friend use it and it was horrid. Having lots of features is nice, but some things are going overboard.

I'll be perfectly fine without flying. I think it unnecessarily shrinks a world, and that's not what you want. Say what you will, but having to take a ferry across continents made the world feel large.

I like the instant teleport system suggested by the official website much more than flying between main travel hubs. Eothorocite (whatever it is called).

Instant travel to a crystal vs a flight path... hmm...

At least I can go grab a beer while the flight path takes 5 minutes.

I understand that people enjoy flying. I'm sure it's fun. But that doesn't make this true:

All flying does,in reality, is provide transportation. Something easily, and perhaps better, done by a network of teleports. Yes, I understand flying is fun, and maybe we'll get it in some form, but don't assume that it "must" be there because that is not the truth.

I wasn't thinking of flying as a transportation device but more of a event/battlefield feature. I would imagine having a campaign battle of sorts with people fighting on the ground against the evil empire's infantry while on the skies you see people duking it out against other airships.

Or an invasion to a dragon lair with people fighting against flying dragons meanwhile people sneak to kill the eggs/queen etc.

I very much enjoyed the starting quests of the death knight class where you bombard the scarlet enclave/crusade/forget the name on top of an undead dragon.

As transportation, well they already told us about the teleporting thing. Both have their pros and cons. Flying on a set path from city to city lets you enjoy the view but its long and after the 100th time, you probably would fall asleep or do something else. Instantly teleporting from place to place... is instant, but the world would feel (i think) a lot smaller.

either way I hope whatever they decide to do is fun and not a time sink.

They have been looking for something to do with Chocobos. In past Final Fantasy games some Chocobos could fly, but had limitations on where they could land, such as not being able to land on forest, water, or mountain terrain.

Maybe they can work in a series of quests that eventually leads to one of these special Chocobos. I would prefer questing rather than Chocobo raising, but only due to my distaste in how it was implemented in FFXI.

Yes, I have. Black chocobos in many of the games, and gold chocobos in at least FFVII (maybe others but I can't remember off the top of my head.)

I think personal flying devices would be a bad idea, but mission based air battles would be a lot of fun. I personally do not want to see thousands of airship flying around because it would just look goofy.
