Quick Question pertaining to both Final Fantasy mmos.Follow

Since this is the forums for 14 i will start there. After playing the game a lil bit with the keyboard an mouse. My biggest question is, If i could get past this terrible UI would the game become more fun? I like the idea of the story driven mmo. Im actually sick to tears of finding games i really enjoy playing (story wise if nothing else) an then having it ruined by pvp. So im wondering if maybe if i could find some way to get around that UI a lil better if maybe the game would start to become more enjoyable.

My other thought is, while i wait for this game to get put together post release, would FFXI be worth looking into in this day an age? I have never really played the game. I never even really heard much about it back when it was released. I was busy with every quest then, an i had played to buy it once on one of my many EQ breaks but ended up getting City of Heroes or something instead.

So a few questions about 11: I heard it was really story driven an made you feel as if your character was part of a huge grand story line. If this is the case how much direction is in the game? How is the story delivered? And by that i mean is it cut scenes or just simple npc dialog windows like WoWs quest system?

Anyway sorry for making a post more about 11 then 14 but im pretty curious about it after all the references to it im seeing on here.

XI is a good game, but unless you have a long standing character with a level 75-85 (since 85 is now the cap) and both abbysea expansions, it really isn't worth starting a new guy on it.

the game's still new player friendly, and you may find a linkshell willing to accept low level players, but ulitmately it's just not worth it in my opinion as a long standing XI player. if i had to restart a new character again, i'd cry and be hugely frustrated =/

however, don't let my own personal feeling discourage you. if you feel like trying the game out, the CDs are cheap, and the free month is still there. use the ffxiclopedia when you need to look something up, and have fun =]]

oh, and ffxiah.com is a good website to use if you start XI, as it updates prices of items housed in the Jueno/Aht-Urghan/Tavnazia auction houses.

Now would probably not be a bad time to get into XI. They have within the last few months done a few server merges. There are quite a few more people on throughout the day than before, making it easier for someone just starting to get into a linkshell that will help you along. The story line is great, and there are several streams of missions and quests that follow each expansion.

Is the game very quest based or is it a grinder? I do kind of have a feeling 11 may see a rise in population due to 14 being so broken. I mean i love final fantasy an always liked the idea of one as an mmo. Makes me sad that 14 is doing what it is.

Is 11 very soloable? I know it was a group game, but is it possible to solo now with the population being as it is?

Right now, it's possible to solo til level 20. I temporarily re-started FFXI this past summer while waiting for FFXIV, and was pleased to find Fields of Valor, increased exp, and a few other things that were added since I quit a few years ago.

I posted in this thread on the FFXI forums a while ago, it might be helpful to read thru it. Good luck.

XI is a huge grindfest, which either people absolutely loved or hated. I loved it. All quests in the game start out with a cutscene, and usually a few during the quest progress. The dialogue is usually excellent as well. Unfortunately, it was hard for me to keep up with the main story, because there was so much time in between spent grinding out levels, crafting and learning how to play the game. Overall xi is an amazing game with tons of stuff to keep you occupied.

edit: also, like stated in the post above, soloing to 20 is easily doable, but no real point to solo after that, for it takes too long, unless you play beastmaster which is more of a solo, advanced class (not unlockable until lvl 30).

the only classes that are really solo-friendly are:

BST - Beastmaster, the original solo class, charms monsters to send at other monsters
BLU - Blue Mage, learns spells from monsters, great survivability, but the learning curve on spells is annoying unless you're really lucky, but the work to learn your spells pays off when you can solo T mobs on your own.
PUP - Like BST, but uses a puppet. Puppetmaster has multiple frames, when soloing the mage frame is what you'll be using so it will cure you.
DNC - Dancer, uses it's TP to cure itself and other party members, takes some getting used to, but amazing survivability.

yeah blu/whm and blu/nin both have good solo survivability. I got to level 43 mostly soloing on Blu/Whm before I quit XI. Fields of Valor makes a huge difference. Soloing on things with sellable drops makes getting money less hellish.

If you go this route I suggest starting as WHM - cause you need level 30 to unlock BLU anyway and WHM makes a decent solo sub for BLU (though most people think NIN is better but NIN is a pain in the *** [I hated playing it] and you won't be able to unlock it till you have a basic job at 30 anyway - so you'll have to do way more work before working up your real job, BLU)

As for FFXIV - gamepad makes the UI a lot better. I would suggest you try FFXIV with a gamepad before giving up on it. Although you may just want to come back around PS3 release when a lot of the stuff that bugs people has been fixed.

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

In fact, the same is true of FFXI; the UI is very gamepad oriented there as well. SE is a console game company, both FFXI and FFXIV were designed mainly around consoles (even though FFXIV came out on the PC first), and it does show.

Yea looking into both. I may just stick with 14 since its new an fresh, even if it is buggy an slightly broken. I mean from what i remember hearing way back in the day was that xi almost died off an then they really started working on alot of things an to think its still going now is pretty crazy. So who knows, every one agrees 14 has the potential to be good.

Another question though, right now im kinda sharing the game a lil bit to try it with my younger brother (who is the real owner) and i have read people talking about buddy passes. But im not finding anything in our case. Did some places not get the passes or is there some other way people are getting em?
