It is our pleasure to announce that the proud banners of the Grand Companies of Eorzea will fly come patch 1.18! We would like to take this opportunity to brief adventurers ahead of time regarding the enlistment process and other pertinent particulars.

¤ The Grand Companies of Eorzea

The Grand Companies of Eorzea are a military alliance of nations united in common cause to avert imminent catastrophe from engulfing the realm. There exist three Grand Companies: the Maelstrom, which sails out of Limsa Lominsa; the Order of the Twin Adder, which makes its nest in the Twelveswood; and the Immortal Flames, which burns in the heart of Ul'dah. Adventurers may freely choose the organization to which they would swear allegiance, regardless of nation of origin.

Company Name City-state Headquarters
The Maelstrom Limsa Lominsa Maelstrom Command
The Order of the Twin Adder Gridania Adders' Nest
The Immortal Flames Ul'dah Hall of Flames

¤ Enlistment Process

To enlist with a Grand Company, first make your way to its headquarters, which can be accessed from the host city-state's market wards entrance. Once inside, speak with the recruitment officer and you will be asked to undertake a mission,* the completion of which will earn you induction into the organization as a recruit.

* Available only to adventurers rank 22 or above.

As recruits are not yet bound to an organization, adventurers are encouraged to use this opportunity to discover firsthand with which company's ethos they most closely identify.

¤ Missions and Rewards

As a recruit, you will be asked to undertake a selection of missions, the completion of which will earn you rich rewards. The nature of the reward will vary based on mission difficulty and your contribution to the organization. Prove your worth by unfailingly completing the tasks assigned, and you will climb the ranks and gain access to all the benefits associated with higher standing.

Missions for recruits will be available in patch 1.18, with those for higher ranks scheduled to be added in 1.19 and beyond.

¤ Grand Company Seals

Completing a mission will earn you an amount in Grand Company Seals commensurate with the difficulty of your assigned task. Each organization issues its own unique type of seal (see below), which serves as a currency of sorts and can be used to redeem myriad useful items.

The Maelstrom: Storm Seals
The Order of the Twin Adder: Serpent Seals
The Immortal Flames: Flame Seals

* Grand Company Seals are honored only by the organization of issuance.

Adventurers may check the amount of seals in their possession by selecting Attributes in the main menu, and then clicking the Grand Companies tab.

.. and just like that we have FFXI styled home-nation missions and story lines.
I guess its true that XIV really doesn't start until after level 20.

Yep I was just thinking level 22 or so is when solo exp really starts to drop off so this would fit nicely with people who are tired of the grind by that time... something they can transition into. I wonder if the missions will be solo or party content and if dungeons have anything to do with companies.
For that matter, what about the crafting and gathering classes?

I thought the removal of fatigue was great news, but this is just icing on the cake! Patch 1.18 has shaped up to be a very interesting one and I can't wait to log in once it finally arrives.

Well I was under the impression that main scenario content could be solable, or at least done in very small groups.

Along with changes to crafting system this is one of the things I have most been waitting for, prefer this (story advancement) to dungeons and such..

The next three patches do indeed to change the game radically.

It is sadly which I suppose makes the soloist happy, you're also forced to be solo with companion and/or various other NPCs till certain fights where you can be with 2-3 or so people.

Here's to hoping GC content is group based.

I've always wondered if GC's were meant to supplement some of the main storyline, considering how spread out it's been. It seems that might be the case, since they mention missions and scenarios...as well as involving the turmoil surrounding Garlean forces. Happy day that we actually have more content!

Probably just some fetch/kill/errand quests, but I am still excited at the prospect of some unexpected bonus content for 1.18. It definitely has the potential to be expanded into a system with some depth (or timesink value, depends on how you look at it) later on, which this game desperately needs.

Wow. Along with the rest of the 1.18 content, it's looking more and more like the population will surge at it's release.

Ti's too bad targeting has lost all priority. I still want to be able to see my party members names highlighted during sub-targeting when I have cure cued. It's such a little thing that makes such a big difference.

All this content and party members will still die due to the incomplete targeting system.

I can't help but be disappointed that you only have to be rank 22 to participate in Grand Companies. Does this mean (since everyone is rank 50) it is going to be super easy for people at max rank? I want hard and challenging for large groups, not something that can be solo'd fairly easily =\. Here's to hoping it is actually challenging!!!

They did say that higher level missions would be issued in patch 1.19, so I feel its safe to assume that your hopes for challenging quests should be met when those quests are released.

Keep in mind that the instanced raids are tied to the grand companies somehow. So I doubt it will be centered around mid levels. But there is a R25 light party dungeon and a R45 full party dungeon. I would be safe to assume that these companies have content centered for R25-50.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but after reading that we'll be accessing this through the Market Wards, I agree with the below posted on bg.. Just add this to the endless list of cut corners and taking the easy way with this game.

It's not really the biggest deal, but IMO something like that should be up a huge staircase, into the heart of Ul'dah, and have a sense of grandeur about it. I'm thinking back to what a cool feeling it was going to Heavens Tower for Windurst missions. There's something just not-as-impactful about going to the market wards and picking a different option.

Instead of a legitimately new area, I'm thinking, "Oh, the wards again.." And, "I wonder what other content they'll jam in there instead of giving it its own place?"

Personally, I'd rather have the new content now, and not have to wait for them to retool the city maps. I know that there are some places on the maps that will gladly lend themselves to new areas, but I'm guessing that they must have plans for them already.

The other possibility being that they plan on retconning the Grand Company entrance locations once they can spare terrain designers from the zone reconstruction. Either way, they don't really have the resources right now to be designing new areas (given that we know they are redesigning several existing areas, which is incredibly resource intensive). So it is somewhat unreasonable to expect them to be able to pump out new areas.

It's a shame, since we all want something great to appear out of this game as quickly as possible; but we all have to remember that even SE has to work within the bounds of reality and what is realistically possible.

Fair enough if it turns out to not be a permanent location, but I thought it was worth pointing out that as is, it seems lame and is a bit of a buzz-kill to have everything at that same damned zone line. All this waiting and advertising of Grand Companies, and we just get directed to the Market Wards again.

I'm going to care so much more about what we get to do and what the rewards are than where I zone into it.

Not to sound like a downer, but I didn't read anything in this announcement that would lead me to believe that there is any kind of storyline tied to Grand Companies(GC). I'm excited for some new content, no matter what it is, but getting your hopes up for something deeper than a reward based rep-grind rather than mindless sp grind isn't a good idea. To me it just sounds like a slightly different version of the rep/faction grinds you find in WoW. Of course it WoW it's championed or done through repetitive daily quests where in XIV it sounds adjustable at least by difficulty.

Don't make the companies more grand than SE lets on until you experience them. Setting yourself up for disappointment if you do.

I think companies will be more like Aht Urhgan content: you choose various missions and get some kind of points for doing them. The counters where the NPCs stand even look similar!

Pretty much. It just seems like an event that has something to offer for people in a wide range of levels that will occupy some time and reward people with gear and ranks. At least it is a step in the right direction giving players some sort of purpose in Eorzea.

Even though it is almost exactly like WoW's rep/seal grind, I still give SE some props for making something that will keep people busy. If the raid content is dynamic based on your GC ranking it could work out really well.

Some people might be excited for the auto-attack, but it doesn't do anything for me if the grind is the same stale, repetitive and meaningless grind as before.

I believe the currencies will also be used for NM style faction levee as well but this is just my opinion.
